I really liked this point. To paraphrase: Focus on giving your best effort in doing anything, and don't worrying whether or not the outcome will imply anything about who you are. Your failure or success in any task and who you are, are two separate things.
I feels like Ryan Holiday's books kinda have a superpower. After reading "the obstacle is the way", even before practicing the ideas in my life, I see many changes in my life, especially in my mind. After reading "Ego Is The Enemy", I feel the same way. And now, I get a chance to watch incredible video on that. Thanks, mate. Wish you all the best
In my opinion, the things called "original thoughts" are very rare in this world. There are something copied and there are something connected. But for me, I cannot learn, read and dig into stoicism, dedicated into that for that long period as him. So I admire him not only for his connected ideas but also for his work, his time and his effort.
This has nothing to do with ego though. You can work just for 5 min and call it “chasing your dream”. The most important part is to keep humbling and destroying the preposterous illusion of yourself, in the hopes of realizing where your position is in reference to your purpose.
The G in the thumbnail? Legendary. The comic book artwork? Legendary. Ali out here looking like a whole snack while sharing his insights on checking our egos is a whole mood and then some.
When you have a lot of something the value of just 1 of those things seems comparatively small. This applies to subscribers as a metric. I think it's important to remember that each subscriber is a unique person - and to have 2 million of these individual personalities tuning in regularly to a single person is beyond incredible. Great video, thank you.
Totally agree with the "keep the process/goals internal." another reason we also lose motivation after broadcasting our goals is because now we feel like we HAVE TO live up to the goal as a result of telling our friends. Sure it might have started off as a goal for ourselves, but now we're not really doing it for ourselves any more, and it's more so due to external pressures to live up to what we told our friends. I sometimes have the urge to tell my friends that I'm starting some new personal project for validation, but I realize it's better to keep it internal and only tell them after I've completed it or tell them after deciding I no longer want to go through with it.
Wait... so I can call my anxiety and OCD conjuring up the worst case scenario in every instance "stoicism"? This has given me a new lease on my mental health 🤩
The one reason I find you better than other content creators is because you actually read good books and share the message. Creators hardly put out anything of value (they don’t read, it shows). You’re a gem!
I agree that negative visualization can be a great tool, but I think that it is very important to acknowledge its downsides too. Negative visualization when taken too far is basically catastrophization, which is an important symptom of anxiety, which frankly is a productivity killer.
Agreed, I love good book recommendations! The first few I saw were books that I already had read and loved, so I'm sold on everything he has recommended since then!
I quite like how you mention that journey comes before destination and how doing the work and putting our work out there should be what we base our self-esteem off rather than the results. I do believe that if you truly love what you're doing, you will feel rewarded already and all the other external rewards will just come as an additional bonus. Furthermore, I think what you said also links really well to this idea: "The purpose of life is to discover your gift; the work of life is to develop it; and the meaning of life is to give your gift away." - David Viscott
The tip about negative visualisation really resonated with me. I think that’s what it takes to get me to hustle a lot more than positive visualisation. The latter puts me in a calm and relaxed mood and I do less. Great tip! Thank you 😊
First, I thought this video is not gonna help me because I don't have an ego but still I chose to watch this video, probably because I don't wanna miss any imp lesson from Ali. Believe me, this video solved my biggest concern which was over positive visualisation, just because of this my mind was continually getting distracted and I wasn't able to focus properly on my study. This was surprisingly great stuff for me. Tons of thanks, Ali.
This book seems to make so much sense. I haven't read it but I've always been trying to do what it says, based how you've summarised it. It often feels like being humble and aiming to do things driven by the desire to do good and do it well, expect the worst but aim for the beast, is wrong in this world we live in. Thanks for sharing.
Really like the idea about how fantasizing or thinking about a future achievement too much can take away motivation to do it. You probably get the satisfaction or dopamine rush thinking about finishing or completing a goal before you do it and so you now don't need to do all the work to get that feeling.
This is an amazing video. Once upon time when I was focused on process I won the Math Olympiad and shocked many with the speed. And after that I am always thinking I want to become this and that. Which end up after 2 hours of exhaustion. Thanks to you I figured it out ❤️

Like this point of approaching negative visualisation constructively to 'do' and keeping goals to ourselves for the most part - both combatting main enemy, ego
We should let success be used as *motivation* to achieve more and not to increase our *ego* It's easy to bask in the glory of achieving big things in life but the people who stay focused on their goals instead of celebrating are the ones who achieve the *most* out of their lives! 💪🏻
Good advice, it says in the Bible the pride goeth before destruction. 2020 was a big wake up call for most of us who realised how quickly the world can change. I like the tip about remembering to call yourself a beginner. There are certain things which some people would say I have mastered but I always have to remind myself of what I don't know. The worst time comes when someone starts to believe their own hype. I experienced a very humbling phase of my life recently and ego was the biggest reason it occurred. When people cannot see their own imperfections, it is a disaster waiting to happen.
I got the book - excellent! I especially liked the many examples of various people, many of them well-known, and their relationships to their egos - how it affected their lives, their aspirations, successes, and failures. These stories illustrate the concepts in the book very well.
Ali have less subscribers than most .. but his fanbase is so much more supportive thats what I know and I actually sometimes get jealous and don't want to share him with my friends while they all know matt and frank 😂
You will always realise that your outer reality is shaping itself upon the model of your imagination. I think whatever we want to do we should visualise it in our brain it works for me like I'm a medical student and I want to be great teacher I see that happening in my brain and now I know the difference, for me it was impossible but right now I completely believe in my self and I think that's not a very hard thing to do,this applies to everything, Huge love and respect Ali bro ❤
Your ego seems under control. One needs an element of egotism to believe in the possibility’s of achievement. Your ego seems a fair reflection of your hard won success. It’s when ego is based on hubris, that’s when the wheels start coming off.
I just love your channel. The way you explain life lessons through books and your very own personal stories is just phenomenal. Congrats on 2 milli 👑👑🙌🏾💯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you Ali, this has helped with keeping going with my canine massage business even though it's not paying out enough yet x Congrats on your 2million subscribers x
Straight up process is big. A huge factor in my lack of productivity is the genuine belief that I can accomplish almost anything. I feel pompous right now but I think often that is why unsophisticated people can do well in college. The people that have everything going for them are often demotivated to put in the work for what they already know they can do. The people that question their abilities are inspired to put in the effort and rise to the challenge. So it is a wash. If everyone was 100% certain that they could climb Mount Everest I don't think anyone would do it. In fact I have a huge pattern of not finishing things. I think it is partially because the more I prove that I can do something the less important it is for me to actually do it.

This is very good to hear. It's kind of the conclusion I have been coming to as of recently in my reflections. It's what you do that makes you who you are. You form your identity, your identity doesn't form you. Sometimes greatness or wonderful people aren't necessarily rewarded with fame, wealth, and the highest regards ( things we generally consider to be the ultimate pursuit). Meanwhile, other people that seemingly don't deserve it have it thrust upon them. If we were to measure life this way, doctors are plebs compared to the mighty tanner fox, and justin biebers. This makes me think of patrice o neal. God tier comic, absolute legend. Held in the highest regards by a community of comedians and fans, but never quite got the expansive wealth and recognition. This doesn't detract from who he was or make his contributions any lesser. Don't talk about it. Don't worry about the vainitys. Just be about it.
Negative visualization. One of the more brilliant concepts I've heard. Use fear as motivational tool, not a barrier. Especially helpful for people with too much blind faith (that everything is going to work out) and an external locus of control.
You made a good point about sharing your goals and visualising them as already achieved. I think that indeed it breaks the tension between where we are and where we want to be that is necessary to take action. Without this tension, you will just stay where you are. *I don't think though that the ego is the enemy.* Thinking like that will reinforce it. You may temporarily shut it off, but it will come back strongly. If you learn how to "dance" with your ego instead of fighting it, you will eventually liberate yourself from it. I mean that if you recognize that it is a part of you, that it is initially there to protect you, you can cultivate a peaceful relationship with it. When you see it coming, you can acknowledge its effort to keep you safe, even thank him for being there to protect you, tell it that you are safe, and go on with your day. Excellent points. This video is actually very timely for me because I was trying to figure out how to promote myself and my content in a way that doesn’t take away from the authenticity of who I am. Also, I get so unreasonably excited every time you mention the Stormlight Archive.
