    Gary, I did this once and ended up with a horrible mold & damping off problem. So ever since then I use a 5oz plastic cup to start and then up cup peppers to an 18 oz drink cup and tomatoes to the large drink cups from the fast food places. I've been saving them for years..easy to reuse,wash them in the dishwasher after I plant them in my buckets. Also makes it easy to give my extras away. Normally your advice is spot on, but this time not so much. Btw, I've got 124 toms and 90 peppers started for myself and friends this year.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      That works. Potting mix isnt sterile so that can happen. Nice on the 124/90 and sharing!

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN No, it wasn't the potting mix cuz I always sterilize it. It was the paper cups, they fell apart from the hole in the bottom which absorbed water. the wax coating breaks down and the mold came from the rotting paper, wax and soil. Pain in the neck to deal with, that's why I switched to the plastic cups. They are basically the same price and last longer,, I'm on year 7 for mine.Just gotta clean 'em!

      You can put them out slowly to get used to the sun. You have to do this over 7 days or so as they need to build up tolerance to the UV rays. As long as it 40+ out you can do it.

    Hey Gary, I started my peppers and tomatoes in larger cups and I planted 2 seeds and they both germinated. So do I now need to separate them and repot into the same size containers (8 oz) or can I just let them continue to grow then put them in my 5 gallon buckets outside? Does this make any sense? Tomatoes should be planted to 1 plant per cup and container, so either thin or divide. You can grow 2 peppers in a 5 gallon pot. 2 peppers can stay in one cup. Tomatoes take a lot of water out of 5 gallon containers when large. It is possible to grow them. Ive done it but now I recommend a 10 gallon pot for tomatoes.

    Where can I find info on when to start tomatos inside in Maine?

      Caleb Laplante Google your town and plant hardiness zone. When you find the zone you are in, google last spring frost date for your zone and then plant the seeds inside 8-10 weeks before that date.

    Good morning. I am starting a garden this year. I made a grow box from your video, but I could only find a light bulb that is GE, its purple, and was labeled a grow light. I have about 3 seedling each in small medicine cups The tomato and pepper seedlings seem to be doing very well, I started them March 29th, and they are now starting to grow their first true leaves. My question is, their stems are about an inch and a half tall, to their leaves is that a bad thing? I know legginess isn't good, but what is considered leggy? Also, I bought miracle grow all purpose granulated fertilizer. How much and when should I fertilize? I'm in Indiana, when can I put them outside?

      Good morning. Check out my grow-light video from this year in the seed starting playlist if you havent. They sound a little leggy. I also have video on starting seeds without grow light. Basically move them in an out. So yes the seeds can go out during day when it is not freezing and always bring them in at night to stay warm. I have vidoes on the fertilizer too in that plays list. 1/4 stregth. Good luck. Here is the playlist ruclips.net/video/z1pM_JfLWhM/видео.html

    If the fertilizer I'm using on my tomato plants says it contains calcium to fight blossom end rot does that mean I do not have to add lyme/gypsum when planting them outside?

      That is probably a yes. Plants dont need a lot.

    Why do people use small containers to start seedlings? Why not put seeds directly in a big pot?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      Its in the video. If you start a lot, smaller cells as they fit under the lights when you have limited space. If you dont start a lot and have the space, use the bigger cups.
