You mentioned the purple tint on the tomato seedlings being normal, I have several super hot pepper seedlings that are turning a really dark purple on top of the leaves. Is that normal as well or do I have a problem? The varieties that are turning purple are peach reapers, chocolate reapers, apocalypse scorpions, Brazilian Moruga, Naga Viper, bleeding Borg 9, and 7 pot lava red. They were started in a 72 cell tray along with several other super hot varieties...This is my first time starting my own seeds, I usually just buy plants ready to go in the ground. This is all new to me, I just thought it was odd that all those different varieties all started to turn purple. Thanks in advance, love your videos!

You really need either grow lights or a cold frame, unless your porch has about 8 hours of direct sunlight you're going to end up with leggy and weak seedlings.

I think so because organic fertilizers take time to break down and be available to the plants. That is part of the reason why it is difficult to burn or shock plants with organics. The salt/chemical/synthetic/whatever you may call them fertilizers are water soluble and readily available to the plants which is why their helpful in new sterile soil.
Castings have immediate value. The plants can go longer before a water soluble feed but I would still give them a low dose. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. I am getting ready to start my seeds indoors in North Georgia. My fertilizer is 3-4-4 would that be ok? Also, should I add some to the jiffy starting mix?
That ratio is fine. You can add some to the mix if you want. There are many ways to seed start. You arent over doing it with fertilizer so that is good. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. So were they varieties you got from me. I have 6 new varieties I bought from a company this year and they are germinating poorly. That being said my house is 65 and not like last year of 75 F under the lights. I found all my peppers are slower. A heat mat might help.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN no i got them from lowes. they germinated just fine last time tested them in seed cells but this time im using the giant pear pellets. im thinking the heat mad isn't getting to the seeds because the pellets are so big.
Gary, when starting seeds indoors - peppers, tomatoes, onions - do I wait until I can see germination before I put them under the lights? Or should I do that at once. Thanks
Nope before they break surface. That first 24 hours is important. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. You can do either. My current protocol is some worm castings in the seed starting mix when I plant the seeds. Liquid feed of some sort when the true leaves come. You just want to be low and slow and not over do it. You can wait longer for feeding if you start with it. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Hi Gary, I have started all my seeds (tomato, pepper, pumpkin, basil) they have all broke the surface and look great. I have not transplanted or thinned them yet or placed them under any light. Is it ok to now put them under lights until they go outside in about 10 weeks? ( my lights took longer than expected to come in from Amazon)
IF they are not too leggy you can do it. It is early though for pumpkin and basil. They are more for later and should be only grown indoors for like 3 or 4 weeks. The pumpkin will flower and and get to big and be more like a bonsai plant. Check out my new Amazon Influencer's Shop. Anything you buy on Amazon helps The Rusted Garden when using my link. I've found that small pepper plants are very easy to stress when transplanting. I always let them go one week extra in their original pot, even 2-3 is preferable to transplanting too soon.
Good Video,Good Info!!!!!

So...after you transplant into a larger container...do you put them right back under the lights? Some of my plants seem to suffer after transplant. Great video, keep up the good work!
So you can. If it was a harsh transplant let them sit quietly for a couple days before they go under the lights.

Yep it is normal for peppers too. Especially if you are staying low with fertilizer and if they colors of different peppers are varying in a flat.
Right on, I was afraid I was doing something wrong...Thanks Gary!
It would be helpful to know what zone your in. I'm in zone 5 and don't plan on starting peppers till April 1st. Should I be starting earlier?
Zone 7 Maryland.

When I transplant to my keyhole garden and large containers should I give them a feeding of the water soluble fertilizer to get them started?
Yep. Thats a great way to do it. Still keep it low 5-5-5 or under. Good luck.

So which fertilizer do you recommend? I looked at your amazon link but there are so many there. Is worm tea enough is Trifecta+ sufficient?
I dont have grow lights..what should I do? Is a sunny spot on porch ok? Also..what kind of fertilizer should i buy?
You really need either grow lights or a cold frame, unless your porch has about 8 hours of direct sunlight you're going to end up with leggy and weak seedlings.
You can move them in and out where you have sun during the day as long as it is not freezing. Just take them in at night.

Would I still need to fertilize my tomato starts if I added some Vermisterra worm castings in my starting mix?
I think so because organic fertilizers take time to break down and be available to the plants. That is part of the reason why it is difficult to burn or shock plants with organics. The salt/chemical/synthetic/whatever you may call them fertilizers are water soluble and readily available to the plants which is why their helpful in new sterile soil.
Castings have immediate value. The plants can go longer before a water soluble feed but I would still give them a low dose.

I am getting ready to start my seeds indoors in North Georgia. My fertilizer is 3-4-4 would that be ok? Also, should I add some to the jiffy starting mix?
That ratio is fine. You can add some to the mix if you want. There are many ways to seed start. You arent over doing it with fertilizer so that is good.

my peppers i started about 2 weeks haven't sprouted yet. will they grow in time to plant outside?

Gary do you wait for liquid fertilizer until true leaves appear or start form the beginning of seed start?
You can do either. My current protocol is some worm castings in the seed starting mix when I plant the seeds. Liquid feed of some sort when the true leaves come. You just want to be low and slow and not over do it. You can wait longer for feeding if you start with it.

Growing in a non heated garage in zone 7 is becoming a challenge. Tomatoes all germinate but after they get about 2-3 inches they stop growing and half of them died off. I’m using worm tea for fertilizer jiffy seed starting mix. Testing three different lights t5 grow lights, unifun 45w LED red/blue/ ir/ uv Light and daylight led 1500 lum 100w bulds.
How warm is it.

What happens if u transplant peppers outside before 8 weeks? Say 6 wks. I’m late getting started but I want to kick them out ASAP...haha.
You can do it after 4 weeks as long as temps are good.

also I took your recommendation and bought the verma worm casting AND the tea. The tea is the fertilizer, yes?
Both are fertilizer. The tea is good for the leaves and roots.

Gary, on this video did you use one gallon of water per tsp?
I put the greenhouse top on my jiffy seed tray. My question is, once the seeds start to sprout, do I wait for all of them to sprout before removing the top?
You can remove it once several start popping

You mentioned in another video that you over seed most of your herbs. What herbs would you not over seed?
Less seed probably would have been better said. Sage is one. Then really the warm crops like dill, fennel, basil, anise. Maybe 3 or 4 seeds per cell.

Yeah that is fine. Make sure they have drainage holes.

seems like extra work to sow extra seeds just to clip them out. I dont mind if I have a few extra or few less plants.
Not too much extra. But it is extra
I have 900 tomato starts. Is that too many?

Now that's just bragging! *grin*. Here I thought I was all fancy with 31 starts. Given that I only have room for about six plants in my garden, I thought _I_ was excessive. Either you're going to make a lot of sauce or you sell some of those plants. When are you planting outside? To state the obvious, that is a lot of tomatoes!
Hi my tomatoes grow to 2m long and carry 6-tomatoes.

Hi do you remember me I am the person that asked if You could grow bananas where you live
I do remember the question. We cant.
water soluble fertilizers (the blue stuff) doesn't smell horrible like chicken manure-containing "organic" stuff so MUCH better to use indoors, where most of us have our early seedlings......
I dont mind a light blue water soluble feeding indoors. It really has everything the plants need while growing.

Oh no...not just you! You should have seen me last year when I actually pruned my tomato plants for the first time! I only did two plants to start because I was sure I was murdering them. By the time I pulled off a few suckers and stuck them in the ground in July, I was ready to try single stemming...those two suckers grew to over eight feet tall...I'm ready to be more brutal this year, but I still have trouble thinning out my seedlings. *grin*
Great videos!!!
