    I cannot compliment enough how Gary's video's are helpful to not only novices but also for seasoned growers. He is accurate, knowledgable and kind enough to go step by step and I really appreciate about it. It is okay if you have no idea about these things, Gary got your back covered. 👍

      Most of what you're saying also is true of some other RUclips gardening educators, like MIGardener, Huw Richards and James Prigioni, but somehow I just absorb the info and tips far better from Gary's vids

    This tip about boiling the water to hydrate the soil (or baking it..which ever) was a game changer for me when I was first getting started several years ago. Gary, you saved me SO much aggravation!! Just that one tip you gave back when I first got started made you my gardening GOD! Still watching!! That had to be 4 years ago maybe.

    Great information about sterilizing the seed mix. Sometimes the fungus gnats can get really bad, and other times not so much. It's nice to know why and how to prevent it. Thanks for sharing what you know with all of us.

    AT 5:45 you mention not needing the humidity dome; I couldn't agree more. Too many folks on RUclips swear by it, and then two videos later discuss microgreens without another mention. I've certainly never needed it. Thank You!

      When you started talking about the fungus gnats (8:30), I had a little flashback from last year. I think the peat moss or soil we grabbed at Lowes was infested because the garden was a mess for a while. Fortunately, I took your advice about the boiling water from another post and had no issues inside.

    This makes so much sense! I've had baby basils taken down by whatever's growing in the rich soil I got for growing veggies. it looks like a fungus that seemed innocuous enough until it started to appear on the little stems of my basil seedlings. And also yes, fungus gnats galore. It's a buffet and I'm footing the bill. None of the 21 basil seedlings made it. My mistake was mostly overwatering from the top, but ever since I used sterile substrates and water sensibly the fungus problem doesn't come back and the gnats stay away.

    I use the humidity dome when temporarily protecting seedlings while hardening-off. I get a lot of pollen and cotton-wood and it helps. When it gets dusty or if aerosol sprays & perfumes (and disinfectants these days) have been used in the house, I use it then too.

      I will be. You can just move flats in and out too. The warmth at night helps with germination. This is better way for the cool weather crops like lettuce and kale. They tend to be more stocky.

      I started winter sowing in late December. I used various containers (deli/soup containers, salad mix containers, 2-Liter soda bottles, deep tupperware containers, etc) and poked holes in both the top and bottom. I then filled them with 2-3 inches of potting soil, placed my seeds in, covered them with soil and watered. I used duct tape to label my containers and then put a piece of clear tape on top of the label (this is so that the name doesn't come off during the winter due to snow or rain). I placed the containers outside on my patio and they'll sit there all winter. When Spring comes they'll start to bloom and sprout. Easy peezy!

    You really do great videos. I replied to another one of your videos earlier today because I just found you. I have tried starting plants from seeds years ago and was never successful. I am doing great this year so far. My plants are looking great so far. I am concentrating solely on Carolina reapers and other peppers with a scoville rating of 800,000 or more. I have 3 grow boxes going right now containing almost 200 peppers. I'm hoping I can get at least 50-60 plants to fruit. I'll give away the rest. If you have any suggestions or tips I would be very happy to listen to what you have to tell.

    Hi Gary I’m loving the videos they are so helpful. I’m new to gardening and seed starting. I bought the smaller cells from you. Could you tell me what the next size cell I should buy when potting up? It’s the second one you show. I would like to start tomatoes in that size. You were out in your store. Also you never mentioned heat pads when starting seeds. Do I need a heating pad?
    Thanks so much

      The small cells are great starters. You can buy any 8-12 ounce cup and put holes in the bottom. Thats a good pot up. We cell round 4 inch pots. They are great. I am also using the quart fabric pots from Root Pouch we sell. You just want the pot up to size they can still till they are ready for the ground. To just start tomato in cells... it the largest 6 cell we have. It will tell you.

    You can also deal with the gnats ( especially if you already have plants growing) by using hydrogen peroxide with a1 part HO to 4 parts water. You do have to top water and need to wet the soil at least 1 inch down. In starts I fully wet the pot. Do this every time you water till you don’t see gnats anymore. It sterilizes them and their eggs. Also stops fungus

    I've been using a lot of the advice in your videos in the last few weeks and already have lots of great seedlings. Getting to the point where some will need to be potted on in the next week or two and I'm going to be using a different potting mix. Do you recommend sterilising all potting mixes in the same way or is that just something for starting mix?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      Great to hear. I mostly just do it for the starting mix. Potting mix probably brings in stuff but it is hard to sterilize with boiling water as it is moistened already. I actually pot up with starting mix if I still have young seedlings. If I am past germinating and plants have some size i just go to potting mix.

    Should you at least spritz the seed at the surface right after the seed goes in, or will the water wick up to the seed after several hours? And should you let the water dry out before adding more? Or do you change the water every two or three days and make sure there is always water under the plant?

    What is the advantage of smaller starting trays? Is it only about space? As they grow you would have the same space issue, is that correct?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад +1

      Start small, get more started when it is cold. As they get to size to pot up, warm temps are coming or at least not freezing. So some stuff goes outside and other places. So I dont put all the pot ups under the grow lights. Just depends on what your growing, when your starting and all that. But if you have room for larger cells to start, that is a good way.
