    I bought LED shop lights after watching your video on it a couple years back. Couldn't find the Kelvin units on the box but they sure are bright and have worked very well for me with starts. Timers take out all the work involved, except for watering of course. Wish there were as inexpensive in Canada as they are in the US. Definitely shop lights are less $$$ than grow lights! Thanks for the info.

    My grow table is small. Only two tiered. But, the lights (unmovable) are too far away at first. I use upside down produce boxes like you get at Costco to raise them up to the light until they get big enough. Those produce boxes are great for that. Saved me a lot of trouble finding books and stuff to stack to get them close to the light. Hope this helps someone.

    I am a gardening newbie who bought a new house last year with a greenhouse (lucky me). Not knowing much about gardening, I made every mistake possible the first year. This year, I am going to follow your plan exactly. I am in Zone 6 so will start seedlings shortly. I bought my shelving at IKEA and the lights at Home Depot. I just wanted to point out that Home Depot sells the exact setup you recommend and markets them as “grow lights.” They do not disclose the kelvins or lumens and they cost 3x more than the exact same lighting (with the kelvins and lumens disclosed). I opted against buying the “grow lights” and bought the fixtures and bulbs you recommended. I also wanted to say that I almost made the same mistake as you in buying a fixture that had to be hardwired (no plug). Reviewers had bought them specifically for grow lights and were upset that there was no plug, so I hope your viewers paid attention to that part of this video. THANK YOU for this amazing content. I will be watching your series in full.

    You also want a high CRI number (Color rendering index. It was shown in the Philips bulbs at 2:49) It tells you how accurate the light output is. Fluorescent lights tend to have a green color cast and the higher the number, the less color cast. Anything above 80-85 should be good.

    I just got to 4:05 and wanted to stop and make sure everyone knew that the Walmart LED kit you picked up does actually list the color temp at 5000k, under specifications. I bought this set sometime around Halloween and had to do a double-take at the checked out because I first believed that was a reprint of the lumen rating and wasn't sure it was enough to flower without a halogen supplement. Anyway...back to the video!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад +1

      At 14:38 you mention not really needing the blue and red (blurple) LEDs everyone always seems to be raving about and I'm really glad you did. I've had everything from Alysum to Habaneros flower under four 6500k 2900 lumen T-8s. The only problem is with fruiting. That's where the halogen bulb comes in.

  • @JM-gs5jn
    @JM-gs5jn 4 года назад +1

    I went from flourescent shoplights to 5000 lumens/6500k led lights. Still trying to figure out a good distance from the plants. With my flourescents I always kept them a few inches off the plant tops. Definitely a learning curve with Led's, already fried a few seedlings...

    From Home Depot I put together the following and has worked great for three years now now.
    I ordered from HDepot Feit Ecobulb Daylight ESL40TN/D. It is 6500 Kelvin and 2800 Lumens. Put them inside the 10 in. clamp light and they work great for small spaces. Only 40 watt and no heat at all from the lights so no burning of seedlings. I keep lamps at 4 inches above top of seedlings. Will cover 4 tomato seedlings for 6 weeks. Hope this helps you guys that have very little space like me. Don't forget the timer..

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад

      So high output varies depending on what they mean. There isnt a catch all definition for it. If they refer to lumens passed 4000, 5000 lumens... they might mean high output. As you increase lumens to that level, you can raise the lights.

    I use the lights and shelves but I replaced the chains with string and run it up through the shelf and back down outside the shelves with a water bottle at the other end. And enough water to balance it out with the light. If you pull the bottles down it raises the lights. If you lift the bottles it lowers the lights.

Amazon do not do the shelving System. The system you bought did you just have to add the lights in? Growing indoors is very new to us and we really want to get the right equipment. Hi Gary, love your channel and have watched a majority of your videos. I’m hoping to start my seeds indoors for the first time this Spring. I live in SE Michigan. Would it be too cold in my garage to start seeds in the spring if I use heating Pads also? I’m assuming it’ll be 40-50 degrees by March- April. Thanks!

      So no. Cool crops will love that. I would use the heatmat to germinate the cool crops and then let them deal with the temperature. Peppers and tomatoes will probably need a mat regularly.

    Gary, love your videos. Ok LEDs don't put out the heat like a fluorescent, right? So for seed starting in a home office area (67-72F during winter) would you prefer the LED fixture about 2-4 inches above the surface or the fluorescent fixture about 1-3 inches above (I am using lighting you describe in video). Also same question if I'm setting up in an unheated garage (zone 7-b, typically 30-40F in winter) and using a heat mat.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      Most everything is fine at those temps. Some things like peppers might germinate more slowly. I would go with LED most likely as they can have higher lumens. That is what I would look at. Just use a heating mat as you plan for flats that need more heat.

      You dont need light to germinate. You need the plants, as soon as they germinate, to be hit by light or they can get leggy. If you keep a perfect eye on them and turn on the light right away, your are fine. Most people miss germination and if you miss it by long enough, plants get leggy. Varies based on variety.

    @Gary Pilarchik, have you noticed any difference in how the seedling starts do when under one of your LED's vs one of your fluorescent lights? There's alot of claims out there about LED lights saying for those that light temperature or even lumens doesn't matter and it's the PAR rating (which alot of LED lights won't say unless they are sold as grow lights). LEDs are very comparable, even cheaper than the fluorescents now (where I live), so I'm really wondering if you have insight into this.
    Also, at the store, I had to literally open the box to find out if it had a chain/cord for the fixture. It didn't say on the box at all, but it did have one inside.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      PAR is great for full growth, flowers and fruit. Ive used Lumens and Kelvin ratings only and that has worked fine for transplants and 8-12 weeks growth.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      If you are around 65 to 70 degree F, you really dont need them. If you are germinating peppers, these temps work but it goes faster with a heat mat. They like to be closer to 80 F. If you are doing cold weather crops like lettuce, Kale, spinach, cabbage etc... a heat mat will make them tall and lanky. The prefer 60ish F. Good luck.

      Some go to 10000 lumens. You just need the lights higher up.

    Did the Hyper Tough 5000L LED light work out well for you? Was it better than the T8 bulbs? I'm trying to decide which to get.

      I cant say one was better or worse. Both work really well. I like being able to replace bulbs just in case. But they both work well.

    FYI: The Walmart 4' LED $22 is 5000 Lumens & 5000 Kelvin. It says it on the side of the box in small print. You can't beat the price or Lumen factor.

      I don't know the part number but those lights are from Walmart. I've seen them in their home improvement section, in the aisle with all of the other tube lights.

    The shelf unit I plan to use for seed starting is 48" wide and 20" deep. I plan on starting 4 1020 trays on each tier. My question is, would I need three shop lights per tier? I usually see people using two but they are running the 1020 trays the other way. Since the lights need to cover a wider area do I need the extra light or will two lights be enough?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад +1

      Ive only uses 2. That works fine. If you are concerned 3 is better but thats up to your budget.

    Hi Gary, I went looking for new lights for next year and I found an led fixture at Home Depot that is 4K kelvin and 10,000 lumens. What is your opinion on the high lumens?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      So I just havent gotten that high. You need to adjust the distance beyond what I suggest but that is a good thing.

    I have purchase LED tube lights which are 20 watts and 6500K? Is this a good light? I assume in LED lights watts can also be measured for lumens? kindly advise if this is a good light for seedlings and all other stages of my vegetable plants for indoors?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад

      6500k I perfect. You want 3000 lumens or higher. 20 watts varies on intensity so you have to find the lumens rating.
