    SECRET TIP: My local Home Depot (Hopefully yours, too) gathers all damaged/torn bags of soil from their deliveries and bundles it at huge savings. My store says they typically have around 3 pallet carts piled with damaged bags, often selling the entire bundle for $5. When an employee told me about this, he pointed at one of these bundles which had already been sold, but he pointed out a bag of some "premium organic" nonsense that he said was normally priced at $60- and it was being sold in the bundle that went for $5. Get there when the store opens and ask someone in the garden department if they are selling any damaged soil bags.

    Gary, I live in Tucson AZ. We are lucky to have TANK'S. I get my small wood chips there-$20 a full truck load. I also get their gardening mix for $20/ half a yard (my Nissan won't take a full yard), also $20 beautiful (no wood chips) compost. All are certified Organic. Sunday a friend need gardening soil and I ran to Lowe's and spent $14 on 2 big bags. Any other day I would have went to Tank's and had a whole lot left....I make my own mix...

    I'm a first time gardener, and I'm using grow bags for my plants. I followed Gary's instructions here to make soil for my grow bags using coco coir instead of peat moss, and all I can say is "Wow" this stuff works well. We had a really cold mid-May to mid-June (low to mid 60's during the day, 40's at night) so I didn't get my plants outside till around the first week of June. They have absolutely flourished since being transplanted outside. I'm getting 1 to 2 pounds of cucumbers a day from my three cucumber plants, my crook neck squash plant has eight good sized squash almost ready to be harvested and all my tomato plants are heavy with fruit. I had raised way more seedlings then I needed and gave them to my sisters, who planted them in ground and none of theirs are doing as well as my plants. Thanks Gary!

    Nice vid for helping save money in potting mixes. Ive always mad my own soil., but one thing I want to add here, I usually buy the bale of peat but in the past I would cut it open around the top and the peat would always dry out and end of dusty blowing everywhere. So to change that I started cutting the bag half-way down all the way around the bag and have a cover lid so to speak keep the top half as a cover and it keeps the peat from drying out.

    Thank you Gary! I'm a market garden startup and I realized fairly early that there had to be cheaper ways of creating potting mix. I started about 1000 plants since the end of January (about halfway). I've watched many of your videos as well as others. So valuable! Thank you SO MUCH! This winter I settled on equal parts of peat moss and black cow, plus half of that in perlite. Big bag of Vigoro is about 17 bucks in Mass. HD. I threw in a handful of fish bone meal but really its probably not necessary. Good for seeds. The perlite did seem to make mix less crusty as it dried. Now that I can finally direct seed outside I'm going to just use soil, peat moss and black kow as a top dressing. Hoping the peat will hold back weeds long enough for sprouts to get going....but the temps are CRAZY this year. Anyway, if you got this far, I am so grateful to you and other RUclips posters for so much crucial knowledge! I wouldn't have a clue otherwise. Cheers and best wishes! Steve@Five a Day Farms.

    I've made my own for years, equal amounts of composted cow manure and top soil with equal amount of peat for containers or vermiculite for seed starter a 1:1:1 ratio. Dolomite lime and fertilizer as he did. I like to screen all my mix to make sure the clumps get busted up. I also fill the bottom of my containers with moldy grass clippings or compost. It helps prevent any soil run out and helps hold moisture. Why moldy grass clippings? Lots of root knot nematodes here and gray leaf mold is said to kill them. My yard use to be worthless sand when I moved here. Now it's nice and rich, but still sand, LOL. Raid your neighbors yard waste and make lots of compost to feed your yard. Tree leaves are the safest for being free of pesticides. Over the years I've chopped up 3 maple trees and 2 pines with a 2nd hand bagging push mower with a sharp blade. 1/2 inch branches and smaller. The bigger stuff is burned or used for grilling. Ashes are Potash. Win win all around. Just pace yourself and don't over do it or you'll get behind real quick. I've got a messed up back, neck, hip and both shoulders. So I have to be slow and careful, but to grow plants is a great medicine and joy. My motto is for gardening is if you can't eat it, or it has to smell good, it better have a use or it's gone. Pretty costs to much, LOL

      Top soil is pasteurized not sterilized this kills weed seeds and many bad pathogens. Do not use garden soil that is what is loaded with garbage like seed and pathogens that lead to plant diseases, unless you have the means to pasteurize the garden soil.

    • @moremerry57
      @moremerry57 5 лет назад

      Nathan Harrison, on the other hand, “top soil” is no longer top soil, as that as pretty much been stripped from all available sources. It’s dirt: lower layers of soil, w/o the benefits TS used to have. Soil from a garden that is tainted w/chemicals - in which you’re growing your vegetables, for instance, tempered w/peat or coir and your good compost - will be quite healthy and MUCH more sustainable.

    Doesn't the use of peat moss kind of defeat the point of low impact gardening as advocated by organic? My understanding is that unless it has been sustainably grown it will have been sliced out of a peat bog, which is pretty bad on a large scale.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 лет назад +4

      Well Canadian peat is sustainable as they manage it ike foresting. They repair the section of the bog they take from. Organic and low impact are different but your point is good.

      Yep I agree. Canada does a great job as they learned from how Europe wrecked their bogs.

      What is the product name of the lime?

    • @jimmahgee
      @jimmahgee 7 лет назад

      Thanks for explaining, but I contest your tone there. First of all I realise that this was not explicitly an organic demonstration and that Gary does not advocate the sole use of organic inputs. However, he does sometimes recommend organic products. Part of the point of organic is to tread more lightly in our use of resources and effect on the environment. So the use of an extracted environmental resource, gardening, and organic methods are certainly all connected. Second of all I'm not reading too much hype - my reference is from that of a European where we certainly overharvest peat bogs (except for the small communities that have been utilising their resource for hundreds if not thousands of years sustainably in e.g. the Outer Hebrides here in Scotland). If all you can buy is this so-called sustainable stuff in North America then go ahead, I guess.

    I have tried Gary's method of making Premium Potting Mix, but I went one step further. 1st I have a small back yard, and I didn't want to dig up what yard I got, so I bought 5 Clothing Bins w/lids, like 17 gallon size, I drilled holes on 1 lid. I then Sifted the Soil and the Cow Manure, took about 15 mins at best, and then I follow Gary's Directions, and I have to admit IT WORKS ! The cucumber leaves are large, deep green and the flowers are very bright yellow. The Tomato Plants are healthy and growing straight up, but to save some of my Premium Potting Soil, I put some empty water bottles at the bottom of the bins, I had also previously drilled holes on the sides of the bins 1-2 inches about the bottom base, none on the bottom. I could not believe how much wood came out of the soil bag and the cow manure. So the soil is finely grain, it makes the plants grow easier. So now that it is the fall, I decided not to use any kind of wood chips, what for, that would defeat the purpose of sifting . So I just water maybe 2 times a week, or some times once a week, then after watering I mix a tea spoon of the Fish & Sea Weed Solution that Gary says to put in his video, and mix it to a gallon of water, and my plants are growing huge. THANK YOU GARY ....

    A tip for peat (and coir?): cut a slit lengthwise down the center of the bale, almost end to end. Run the garden hose in there for a LONG time. Leave this at least overnight, although if you do it earlier, you’ll be able to repeat if you’ve not added enough water.
    Mixing with the other ingredients won’t be as easy as the cake flour mixture Gary makes, but your prat won’t blow away, or be inhaled, either.
    Eventually, the peat in the bag will dry out, which will make moving what’s left more feasible. If you want to work w/moistened peat over a week or so, run a piece of (duct?) tape down the slit.

      Correct. Some people don't recognize that there is no microbe activity in their potting soil.

    • @moremerry57
      @moremerry57 5 лет назад

      Parker 3, worm castings create microbial activity in the soil that is virtually non-existent in any mix without. Even w/compost, which has some activity, castings will create tremendous productivity, which you should see w/in 3-4 weeks. And sturdier plants.

    You can add in some ["a couple shovels full"] of Compost; "if you have it".
    That's all folks.

      85 miles to the nearest Walmart, sounds like you drove 80 miles too far. Odds are you are living in an area that has farms. Farmers that have animals have manure. Most every farmer I have ever talked to is more than willing to sell some manure.
      The 2nd good thing about farmers is most have gardens, and will be able to tell you what type of soil you have, and what you will need to add to it and more than likely even give you a name of a friend that has it or a place you can pick it up for free.
      Product, like he is showing here, has its place, and that is in the suburbs.

      @@Gantzz321 Hi there, yes I am very rural, in the Desert of SW NM. Agricultural farming here, no animals. "Wild" cattle roam about here and there on BLM leased lands. Anyway, Walmart carries manure for $1.25 a big bag, so I got some of that to add into my alchemy recipe of trying to turn sandy clay dirt into rich soil.🤞

    Superb video! I went out and bought the basic ingredients, as Gary suggested, and made my own mix. Sure, his recipe is a basic guideline for potting mixes and may be experimented w/ and changed according to peoples own preferences and ideas. LOL. Well, I figure that I received six large bags of mix out of spending approx. $28 total. Well, that equates to $60-$90 worth of store bought stuff!!! Better yet, I pretty much know what's in my own. This is great!! Thanks, Gary.

    Thank you so much, Gary! You have expanded my gardening experience by leaps and bounds this year! For the first time, I started some tomatoes and peppers from seed, along with a few herbs, and I gasped when they began to come up out of the seed starting mix! Truly gasped with delight! All from your store, of course! ; ) Set up the grow lights as you directed with great success.
    Now, I'm taking the next step and making container mix as you have directed. I'm having to use some containers on my deck this year because of some mobility problems getting down the hill to the area where I used to garden, so here's my question (finally!). I bought some 5, 7, and 10 gallon grow bags to put on plastic saucers on my deck and don't know which would be best for peppers and tomatoes. I know you say you "can" do it in a 5 gal. bucket, but is it better to use a 7 or 10 gal. if you can? For the tomatoes and peppers. I kinda figured the 5 gal. would be okay for the bell peppers (do you agree?), but which would be best for the tomatoes (I have both determinate and indeterminate)? Thank you for your time! Debra

      Very very glad to help. And thank for going to my store, it was a goal to set it up this year. 5 gallon is great for 1 pepper, yep. You can do tomatoes in it but they require a tight eye on watering so a 7 gallon bag is great. You could actually do 2 peppers in 7 and 10 gallon bags. A 10 gallon bag would be great for bringing a tomato to full size and you can tuck herbs around it. And that being said... determinate in 5 gallon. Indeterminates in 7 and 10 gallons. Good luck!Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com

      Gary Pilarchik thank you for your input, doing as you suggested. Love the idea of herbs around the tomatoes! I can and will be meticulous about watching the water closely, I'm here during the day and can do that. I think that's one of the keys to success that I've gleaned from your videos, don't let anything dry out! Maybe at some point, a pkg. deal of seeds for container gardeners could be offered in your store. Headed there now for those cool sprayers and more seeds for fall and cool weather. Happy Easter!

    Great video. Here in Phoenix Arizona oh, the growing season is much longer. I notice the soil level drops pretty drastically in a pot from March through December. I started adding more volcanic sand and perlite to my mixes to help aerate in the hot summers, but also to add something to the mix that doesn't shrink down in size throughout the season. It also adds to the medium ingredients that don't shrink down through decomposition. It seems to work well here compared to what I was using before. So my mixes from greatest amounts to least:
    Peat moss, volcanic sand, backyard compost, perlite, locally made worm castings, and my amendments.

    Last year, my potting mix was 1:1:1 of peat/bagged compost/vermiculite. Because I use five-gallon Viagrow and Root Pouch grow bags, the mix was a bit on the light side and it seemed to dry out easily. Next time, I'll probably do a 1:2:1 and maybe even try a few pots with only 1:1 peat/compost.
    When I finally get around to setting up the pots this year, I'll just freshed the old mix with some bagged compost.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 лет назад

      I bet the vermiculite isnt really needed for the mix. I use it for my seed starting mixes and it does wonders for that.

      nery colon 1, WARNING: you don’t mention *composted* manures. Manure MUST be aged, or “composted”, by which I mean left to age and break down. Fresh manure, even just a bit, will FRY your plaint.
      Most old gardeners use year-old manure to be safe.

    • @moremerry57
      @moremerry57 5 лет назад

      nery colon 1, also, as Gary pointed out, Miracle Gro dirt, or any fertilizer dirt is just dirt - like in your yard - and a scant handful of fertilizer. You could buy a bag of “top soil”, which tbh honest is dirt not what used to be considered top soil, and add the fertilizer yourself. Check what you’d save.
