@@josephperkins6625 HEY, STUPID, Gibson NEVER PLAYED in the WHITE MLB because WHITE people would not let him b/c of racism & segregation. He did play in the BLACK MLB (Black Leagues) which also produced Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roy Campanella, Ernie Banks, Monte Irvin, Frank Robinson. Once WHITE people let them play in the WHITE MLB they all won MVP and are in the Hall of Fame. Josh Gibson was the best of all.

Respectfully, MLB now ranks the Negro Leagues as "Major Leagues,Roy Campenella was playing for the "Big League" Baltimore Elite Giants for nine years during the Jim Crow era ,until he joined Brooklyn in '48.In my opinion ,he ranks higher than 6th on a top 10 list of catchers.By the way,if Campy was around to see your list,he might suggest you might consider his mentor Biz Mackey,as well as the legendary Josh Gibson.I might add,I saw Campenella play, and I'd rank him no lower than 3rd.

This is a great debate. I always thought this was a no brainer since I watched most of Johnny Bench career. And you look what ESPN and Sports Illustrated states and you believe it. But you really need to look at the stats. So I did.
So here it is. I have and have evaluated every catchers career. I gave them points for 5 different categories. 1250 Points were the Maximum and 70% of that is a Hall of Famer. That total is 875 Points
2 for Offense and 2 for Defense and 1 for Post Season, Awards. That includes Offense...... 1. Hitting Average, OBP, Clutch Hitting 2. Power - HRS, Extra Base Hits and Slugging Defense..........1. Caught Stealing %, Pass Balls 2. Calling Games and Handling Pitchers, Leadership, Winning and Catching amount of games. And my 5th is MVP awards, ROY, World Series winner, and Post Season Stats. Adding all of these together these are my Hall Of Fame Catchers. and their rankings.
I also take Stadiums, Different Decades of play, Less games per season, Pitching Mound Lowered and Strike Zone Shrinkage(1969), and amount of teams in league.

    1. YOGI BERRA 1118 Points What separates him from Bench is Post Season. And he also played 8 less games per season than Bench in the best period of his career. And Yankee stadium dimensions for center and the allys were brutal for HRS. Note: Berra had a better CS % than Bench. So he was not a bad defensive catcher but an excellent one at that.
    2. JOHNNY BENCH 1090 Points
What else can you say but a great player.
    3. ROY CAMPANELLA 1063 Points - He had a shorten career due to his accident and starting out in MLB at 26 years old.
But his stats are why he is third.
    4. GABBY HARNETT 1020 Points - Him and the next player I went back and forth with. You could move him to fifth and I won't have a problem.
    5. IVAN "PUDGE" RODRIGUEZ 1017 Points - Defensive wizard
    6. MIKE PIAZZA 998 Points - His offense was too good and he caught 1600 games. Best hitting Catcher.
    7. BILL DICKEY 980 Points - Him and the next catcher are just about tied.
    8. MICKEY COCHRANE 975 Points
    9. THURMAN MUNSON 960 Points Why? Look at his stats and look at his post season numbers. Was considered the 2nd best catcher to Bench in that era. Shorten career because of death in a plane crash. A shame he is not a Hall Of Famer.
    10. GARY CARTER 950 Points Great Leader
    11. CARLETON FISK 938 Points 2,226 games behind the plate. The 2nd most. A real lifer. I have him ranked here after looking at his stats. Also injured a lot in the early beginning of his career. But he played to 45 years old.
    12. ERNIE LOMBARDI 928 Points
    13. BILL FREEHAN 910 Points So underrated. He deserves the Hall.
    14. JORGE POSADA 895 Points Great Offensive numbers and caught 1574 games. A winner and clutch hitter.
    15. YADIER MOLINA 890 Points and counting. Only Catcher who is playing I listed. Yes Posey will be in the top 10 and Mauer will be on this list. They all should be Hall Of Famers.
These 15 are my definite Hall of Famers. The next Two I also have in.
    16. ELSTON HOWARD - 880 Points - Why? His stats are debatable but he lost three years for him not being allowed to play im MLB due to his race. Next two years he fought for our country. He also was the first African American to win MVP in the American League. And as a RH batter he had to play in the old Yankee Stadium. He also caught 1138 games. He should be a Hall Of Famer.
    17. WALKER COOPER - 880 Points - He had a 285 lifetime average and a 45% Caught stealing. He was runner up to MVP 2x and I would him put on this list. Look we have 3 catchers who should not be in the Hall of Fame with Roger Breshanan, Ray Schalk and Rick Ferrell. Roger and Ray was just shy of 800 points and Rick 760 points.
Another player who deserved Hall Of Fame was JOE TORRE. Only negative he had he catch only 903 games. I think Hall Of Fame voters wanted to see a 1000. But Joe Mauer will also be like Torre when he retires since he only has 921. But at least Torre got in as manager.
There are Two other Catchers that I have right there and eventually one of these two will go in.
TED SIMMONS - I have him with 865 Points and just slightly missing that 70%. But I can see myself changing my mine since he was a wonderful hitter. He was excellent with St. Louis. His defensive numbers is lacking with a 34% CS ratio and his 182 pass balls. But he did catch a nice number of games.......................1771. So if you tell me tommorrow I probably put him in.
LANCE PARRISH - 865 Points. His numbers are so underrated and no one talks about him. He had 324 HRS to Simmons 248 with 1600 less at bats. Those are great power numbers. What hurts him is his .313 OBP. He did throw 5% better than Simmons in SB % but his 192 Pass Balls were just as bad as Simmons. He caught even more games than Simmons with 1818 behind the plate. Look at the shortage of catchers making the Hall and I can see one day him at least him being considered seriously. If Simmons gets in he should too.
    That is my list
Others I evaluated who accumulated in the 800's Point total were GENE TENACE.......845 Points, JAVI LOPEZ.......840 POINTS DARRELL PORTER......833 POINTS MANNY SANGUILLEN.......833 POINTS TIM MCCARVER.......825 POINTS BENITO SANTIAGO.......820 POINTS, SHERM LOLLAR......813 POINTS, JASON KENDALL....800 POINTS
    and BOB BOONE......800 POINTS.

@tonymanero6914 WELL DONE. I like your analysis and I agree with most if it (LOL) It's well thought out. However: (1) No mention of Josh Gibson, not allowed to play in MLB because of racial segregation yet elected to MLB HOF and considered one of the all time greats. (2) Berra was lefthanded hitter, Yankee Stadium right field fence was 296 ft. (built for Babe Ruth to hit homers), (3) What adjustments, if any, did you make for Roy Campanella? Only allowed to play 10 years because of racial segregation, extrapolate his numbers over 18 years he rivals Berra & surpasses Bench. Therein lies the problem with comparing different generations b/c everything changes. Stadiums are larger, more night games after 1960, relief pitching, more games per year. You like Bench but never saw Berra and Campy play. Does that influence your perspective? Except for Gabby Harnett , Bill Dickey, Mickey Cochrane I have seen everyone on this list play. Does that give me a better judgment on who is better? Maybe so, maybe not. BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO IS GREATEST. WHAT DOES MATTER IS WHOMEVER YOU CHEER FOR THEY GAVE YOU WONDERFUL EXPERIENCES AND MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME.

Pudget hit around 2,800 hits, all playing the catcher position....that's almost an unbreakable record. The best catcher in MLB history is Pudge Rodriguez.

I love my Tigers, but Lance Parrish isn't even the best catcher to play in Detroit. I would give my vote to Bill Freehan. An all around steady catcher who did the job at an All-Star level. Was named an All-Star 11 of his 15 seasons, all played in Detroit. Had he played in a bigger market, he would have been named to the H.O.F. as one of the greats at the position. Lastly, how about an honorable mention to Toledo native Roger Bresnahan. Player can thank him for shin guards, batting helmets, and the padded catcher's mask.

Munson and Parrish are both overrated. Neither is in the Hall of Fame, which would be expected of someone in the all-time top ten at their position. You also didn't mention the strongest argument for Roy Campanella, who threw out 57% of the runners who attempted to steal on him.

Munson was a gamer and great clutch hitter. He also handled pitchers well. Not in the HOF because the plane crash shortened his career. But considered one of the best of his day. I agree with you on Campenella.

@@roberthudson1959 He was one of the reasons they were a great team. Watching behind the plate was a treat for us Yankee fans. Great clutch hitter too. Sport Magazine considered him the best catcher of his era. The injuries of the last couple of years lowered his stats and I think that's what is keeping him out of the HOF.
