Avi Shevin look, I’m bad at names too. Really bad. But it’s not that hard to say “hey, what is your name again?” And “hey what are your pronouns again?” Is just as easy.

Misgendering someone in French class is evil. It's not just the pronouns: everything in French in gendered (binarily, at that). Or at least, all the adjectives are. If you only use the correct name you're essentially doing nothing if you then go on to call the other person "Heureuse" when they're actually "heureux"and "belle" when they're really "beau".
@@he.said.teenjiejer a lot of languages have this issue in spanish its REALLY difficult to use gender neutral sentences. Some people started ussing the -e at the end of the nouns and adjetives instead of the usual -o (masculine form) or -a (femenine form) example: children -chicas (fem plural) -chicos (masc plural) -chiques (neutral plural) BUT since most of spanish speaking countries uses the guides from the RAE (Real Aademia de la lengua Española/Royal Academy of the Spanish language) and this institution (and A LOT OF PEOPLE) its against the use of "inclusive" language (cause tradition) its reaaaaaaally hard to make any (significative) progress. @@PutoMedicoBrujo in brazillian portuguese some ppl are also trying to use the -e at the end to make it neutral, but unfortunatelly the "x" instead of "a" or "o" has been so far spread amongst the people who are willing to make that change that you see it everywhere instead of the -e. it's kind of upsetting bc the "e" is actually fit for nb ppl who prefer those pronous, and also for ppl who have a hard time reading words with an "x" for various reasons as far as i've heard, so the fact that you refuse to use it in text, and therefore adheres to a form of neutrality that isn't fit for speaking makes it seem like you either don't know much about the subject anyway. idk if those changes are being discussed academically and officially, so i can't say if there's an institutional power against it, but i suppose it isn't being discussed bc everyone is settled with the "x" which isn't very appropriate. it's gonna take a while for ppl to start actually saying words with "e", and since we're not on that level yet i don't think it'll be recognized anytime soon. though i admit i don't use that in speech either, and when texting i often try to neutralize the phrase instead of using the "e". maybe i should do my part and start to normalize it. either way, sorry for the long comment as well, this is an interesting topic

RockyTheBlocky They do have free speech. There are just some things that shouldn’t be okay to say. If you know someone’s pronouns, and know how much they struggle every single day with gender dysphoria, it’s honestly cruel to knowingly misgender someone just because you don’t get it.
I want someone to use he/him pronouns for her and see how she feels. Then when she says that she is a women they pull up this video. That would make my year
Lisa Ashwood She would still feel uncomfortable and be confused as why she is being referred to by he/him pronouns. Dysphoria is a trans person being uncomfortable with body parts and pronouns and not everyone experiences dysphoria in the same way. By using the wrong pronouns she would sort of get a feeling of dysphoria because she isn’t being called what she wants to. It would have the same effect without her actually having dysphoria.
Imagine hearing someone introduce themself with their name and being like "No, that's not your name. I will call you [insert name here] and you are [insert gender here]. Why? Because I said so."
Imagine the plot twists that could appear. For example, a system might introduce themself by their system name, but then be told that they’re whoever’s in charge. “Hello!” “Hi! I’m Kae.” “No, you’re Isaac.” “….huh?” “You fool, I’m a mind reader! Also tell Damian I said hi.” (Panic ensues.)
I’ve been wanting to say this for a while, but I’m a closeted trans male, I’ve only come out to very close friends and my sister. One day, I was feeling horrible about being trans, ashamed even. But, i got a strange feeling that i wanted to go on RUclips, like it was the only thing that would make me feel better. I saw this channel in my recommendations and clicked on it immediately. Video, after video, I couldn’t stop watching with a stupid grin on my face. Jamey, this channel, and even the people in the comments section, made me feel like I have a family, like I have a home. I didn’t feel so scared about myself anymore and even felt proud about this pink white and blue pride I have in myself. I had a conversation with my sister last night, when I told her I didn’t want to get surgery, or go on T. She said something that I couldn’t stop thinking about. “But then you’ll never be a real boy”. After watching Jamey, seeing his story, and hearing many of yours, I know that’s not true. Say it with me folks: Discrimination isn’t justified because you have a different opinion!!! Discrimination is ILLEGAL and comparing it to politely disagreeing on an issue is absolutely ridiculous.
Where I'm from, legally hate speech isn't protected under freedom of speech. So like, Nazi swastikas aren't protected as an example. I remember getting into a pretty invloved fight (?) With my dad because of this issue. He describes himself as a libertarian. I'm a lesbian so maybe this affects me a lot more then him but idk. I just couldn't get through to him
@@emi_nemone2792 I half agree and disagree. I don't think it should be illegal to say it but I am completely fine if saying it gets you to lose your job and becoming ostracized. As the video said, "Free speech does not mean freedom from consequence." Basically the only thing that protected speech means is that you can't be put in jail for saying it; that's all. For example, you can be nazi all you want but if you job finds out you are they have the right to fire you over your choice and people do not have to respect that opinion. I will add though that this is only for choices not for something that is not a choice like sexual orientation or disability. I also don't consider gender a choice and sex (biological) and gender (mental) are not the same thing.
@@Nostripe361 I agree. Just so people know, by hate speech I meant the legal term meaning extreme hatred for a person because of their perceived group. Actual definition is: abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice against a particular group, especially on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation. Usually hate speech will naturally fall into a hate crime (but not always). Because of this its hard to prove and seek justice legally. So like, the new indepedent fundamentalist baptist group that advocates for the capital punishment (ie government can just put you to death) of lgbt individuals is hate speech. Talking about wanting to beat someone up because they are (insert race or group here) is also hate speech. Saying you don't believe in the gender spectrum, while I disagree, isn't hate speech.

My favorite thing about the chromosome argument is one: intersex people exist. And two: they don’t test chromosomes at birth so how would they know if you’re actually xx instead of xy or vice versus?
blackkakari did I say intersex was a gender? No. I said the chromosome argument was pointless because intersex people exist and they have different chromosomes
@@leviidkwhyineedalastname4828 That's just a mutation. Just like vitiligo. It doesn't delegitimize the fact that chromosomes determine gender the same way DNA determine race.
Chloe McCain yea I think they were only talking about those who are rude and disrespectful towards the trans community just because they’re trans and they don’t agree w/ them. and it’s true that you don’t have to agree with it or support trans people to be respectful. someone I know personally is that way. she’s tried hard to be respectful and try to understand, and she’s really not a bad person, so yeah that’s true ^ ^
DewdropKitten most of the time I think people’s reason for not ‘supporting’ trans people is a lack of understanding, and maybe no cis person can understand what it’s feels like to be trans, but just because you don’t understand someone’s identity doesn’t mean you can’t be respectful to them, be kind, and you ARE going to face repercussions for discrimination. E.g. while you are completely free to refuse to hire a woman in the workplace and claim that women should be at home with the kids, that doesn’t mean that you won’t get fired for treating that woman in a discriminatory way. You’re allowed to say that, no one will force you to work with her, no one can, but you may not have a job at the end of it because your actions always have consequences! Idk why it’s so hard for people to understand??
I hate how people abuse the use of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of being a bully or the freedom of giving death threats. I mean in a way you do, but it doesnt make it right as it is harmful to others and violent and can cause death.
I've even seen stuff like this happen to a cis classmate. She had a name that wasn't particularly gender specific, short hair, and a deeper voice than most high schoolers. Pretty much every teacher and many classmates misgendered her at first but fixed it after being politely corrected. One teacher (we assumed cause he was ancient) just went the whole year calling her "he".
A friend of mine is exactly the same appearance wise , except that he has a official female name. He decided that he wanted to be called a male name and that they use the male pronouns. Our teachers didnt because "it's not in your birth certificate, so we cant call you that" (literally what they said). I still call him by female pronouns by accident sometimes but i correct myself whenever I can. They were outright refusing and discriminating against him.
I am basically the opposite some people tell me I have a light voice which I don’t think I have maybe I do and I am very very long hair like some even longer than some of the girls in my classroom so I get called a girl a lot
I’m gonna say this. As a trans (FTM) when I came out to my three friends, I was met with mostly positivity. Two of them (both cis, but LGBTQ+, one is hindu and the other is non-religious) respected me and supported me. The third friend (christian, cis, and hetero) simply said “okay.” For a while, she would be uncomfortable if the topic of LGBTQ+ was brought up, but she STILL RESPECTED MY NAME/PRONOUNS!! The worst thing she ever said to me was that she didn’t understand why I would want to be different. Since then, she has become much more accepting of the topic, and only discriminates against me if she is around her parents or my parents (she lets me know beforehand as well!) I have another friend as well, who is Islamic. As most people know, Muslims cannot support LGBTQ+. But, they can respect it. Meaning. That Islamic people can still use someone’s preferred name/pronouns. It’s not okay to discriminate no matter your religious beliefs, your personal beliefs, etc. just call someone he, she, they, xe, ze, co, thon, whatever pronouns they use and respect their name! *_IT’S NOT THAT HARD_*
I remember my history teacher saying something like "Your freedom stops where someone else's begins." It always made sense to me, I can't just do/say whatever I want if it affects someone else. It's common sense and respect. Some of those people need to think, really. It's not their free speech we want to take away, but the pole stuck in their butts.
This! I don’t know about the US but in Germany this sentence is basically one of the first things you learn in law school when learning about freedom of speech!
Dude, Why would you even give a shit if someone is homophobic or transphobic?Like dude give them a slack let them think what they want unless it affects you, not everyone has to accept the other
Yeah, language control, never ever happened in the US before. Native children weren't kidnapped and forced to speak only English, and no one has ever harrassed immigrants for using their first or heritage languages between themselves. /s
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't language control also enacted upon indigenous Canadians in residential schools? If so then it's not even exclusive to America as a country
@@alissaandry1332 It was very common in many countries, also for example in the UdSSR, enforcing Russian as the only official language pretty much everywhere. It's also still a problem today, for instance in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government tried to suppress the minority of Russians (later 'separatists' in the Krim conflict) by trying to forbid Russian as another official language. No wonder they finally had enough and wanted home to mother Russia. The German minority of South Tyrol (Italy) also had to fight for their right to keep German as their officially accepted second language repeatedly. The list continues.

There's no way the French teacher just "avoided using pronouns or gendering the student" because it's impossible to teach French (and many other languages) without gendering someone in your speech. What's worse is there's no neutral gender in French, you typically use masc instead, so this guy would literally be going out of his way to be obtuse. (for no reason) He may be able to avoid it in English, largely thanks to neutral speech, but there's just no way this teacher was able to avoid it with French. Wow. He's really banking on people not knowing how other languages, particularly French, work. Gender is woven into the very nature of the language itself, not just the obvious pronoun portion. It changes a number of factors when you speak or write. The concept he magically avoided it is laughably bad. Edit: Oh man 1k likes is the most I've ever had! asdfghjkl! Thanks guys! Remember it's not hard for a language teacher to stick with your preferred pronoun whether they like it or not.Their whole job is to help you learn things, not to control every aspect of your existence. That's not their right. We don't let teachers do this with religion or ethnicity and gender identity isn't any different. Protect trans kids!
@@he.said.teenjiejer That's a very English way of thinking about it lol. French isn't the only language that does this by a loooooong shot. I grew up with the same concept only in Hebrew, Danish, and Spanish. We generally just use masc pronouns, no prob. Using the masc as a default for neutral groups is seen as normal. It's honestly not much of an issue when you're used to thinking that way in the first place if that makes any sense. It's just different. idk. I wouldn't say we're screwed either. I personally don't even think about it tbh. It would be like trying to remove neutral pronouns from English: neat, but bizarre. People do still attempt to create personal neutral pronouns though for sure. It just doesn't always stick. (just like with English) Heck. A lot of non-binary LGBT people don't even use them because, as far as many are concerned, something already exists.
An example on how gender linguistically is viewed differently in French: My chair, in French, is gendered as female and I would refer to it that way grammatically too... but it's an inanimate object. Like with people animal names also change depending on their gender, (une chatte VS un chat) but most people will just use the masc. (edit: totally just remembered this, but goats actually take the feminine as their neutral pronoun!) This is part of why I say there's literally no way around gender in French too. People at least have a say in their gender and how they wish to be called, but literally everything in French is gendered no matter how you slice it.
What I don't understand is these same people would trip over themselves to apologize if they misgendered a cis person or mispronounced/misspelled a co-workers name, but can't bring themselves into the reality that they are just as mistaken when they do this to trans people.
What? Only when they misgender a cis-person? No, they would also be offended if you misgender their dog or even their car, which doesn't really have a gender. I wonder where the argument of chromosomes, biology, reproduction or religion went, when one of them gets offended because someone stupidly used the "wrong" pronouns (although anything other than "it" would be wrong) for a car that doesn't have a gender, but they use "she" when referring to their car, boat, guitar or whatever, and they expect you to respect that.
There's people in my family who've compared trans people to ex convicts on Facebook. "It's f**ked up how we accept people who change their gender but not ex-convicts." Like...I'm all for ex convicts having a good life and being accepted into society, But they're not the same thing...
I love when people say “the biology based view” and go on to repeat a view that is no longer supported by biology. It’s almost as though...they don’t actually care about the truth?

The thing I don't understand is "transracial" which I've heard of a few times. It seems to be this vague extrapolation of being transgender but applied to race instead of gender. I get that gender is a social construct, but so is race I think, meaning that the concept of "transracial" should be validated as well? I'm just asking to understand whether it's something I should respect the way I respect changing genders, because I've always felt it to be a nonsensical concept.
I view it like being racist. If a person is racist in the workplace, they would get fined. Their argument of “it is my belief” is the same thing people said during the civil war regarding whether *people should be allowed to be treated as people* . This is very similar to me in the way that people fought against it, but obviously not in the struggles. If the video talked about being of color in the video instead of being trans, they would come off as complete idiots, and they still do now. I just worry about the people who learn all of their information on trans people through a google search and a poorly researched add
Even a google search will give you more info than these ads. A lot of their research is unreliable. or they cherry pick data and skew statistics. They use graphs, but half of the time, they are missing a vital part of the graph. Or even showing something that isn't even graphable.

Protecting everyone from hearing things they don't want to hear will just make them more sensitive to emotional harm because they haven't had the opportunity to develop a tolerance. The problem is that they apply the vernacular definition of a theory, "a possible explanation for or prediction of an event", to the scientific usage of the word theory, whose true definition is "A proposed explanation for a given phenomenon that fits all observations and is corroborated by repetitions of such observations", and then work from that to develop such dumbass and downright antiscientific thinking.
These types of arguments always get my blood boiling because my s/o (calling them sweetheart is the most wonderful thing because their face lights up whenever I do it) recently came out to me as nonbinary and thought I would break up with them (I would never). I've been practicing using their correct pronouns, and I correced myself when talking to my mother. She did not like the fact that I correced her as well because misgendering someone is fundimentally discrimination, and proceeed to tell me that I was wrong and that they were a girl. I was absolutely livid and went off on her saying it was disrespectful and I didn't want to bring up the topic of racial slurs, but in retrospect it would have really helped my argument. I was told by several of my family members that I was being disrespectful to my mother and that she can have her "opinions". I wanted to argue further, but lost my energy and intend to correct her in the future whenever she misgenders my sweetheart. -chicas (fem plural)
-chicos (masc plural)
-chiques (neutral plural)
BUT since most of spanish speaking countries uses the guides from the RAE (Real Aademia de la lengua Española/Royal Academy of the Spanish language) and this institution (and A LOT OF PEOPLE) its against the use of "inclusive" language (cause tradition) its reaaaaaaally hard to make any (significative) progress.

Saying you don't believe in the gender spectrum, while I disagree, isn't hate speech.

yea I think they were only talking about those who are rude and disrespectful towards the trans community just because they’re trans and they don’t agree w/ them. and it’s true that you don’t have to agree with it or support trans people to be respectful. someone I know personally is that way. she’s tried hard to be respectful and try to understand, and she’s really not a bad person, so yeah that’s true ^ ^
Yikes.
oh that's _yucky..._
That happens to me too. I have a gender neutral name, short hair, and a slightly deeper voice. Substitutes always misgender me. All. the. time.
I’m gonna say this. As a trans (FTM) when I came out to my three friends, I was met with mostly positivity.
Two of them (both cis, but LGBTQ+, one is hindu and the other is non-religious) respected me and supported me.
The third friend (christian, cis, and hetero) simply said “okay.”
For a while, she would be uncomfortable if the topic of LGBTQ+ was brought up, but she STILL RESPECTED MY NAME/PRONOUNS!!
The worst thing she ever said to me was that she didn’t understand why I would want to be different. Since then, she has become much more accepting of the topic, and only discriminates against me if she is around her parents or my parents (she lets me know beforehand as well!)
I have another friend as well, who is Islamic.

That’s what I was just thinking.
True! Non-binary French people are totally, completely screwed.
(edit: totally just remembered this, but goats actually take the feminine as their neutral pronoun!)
This is part of why I say there's literally no way around gender in French too. People at least have a say in their gender and how they wish to be called, but literally everything in French is gendered no matter how you slice it.
I was just kidding lol I know that much, I take French
"We will have lost the words."

Not one person has ever been put in prison, or fined, or ever had any sort of legal punishment for misgendering a person. The people who are being punished are those discriminating against trans people. If there were establishments discriminating against Christians, I would be right there with you fighting against that.

Misgendering *anyone* is unacceptable no matter *who* you are, what your "opinion" is on people who don't identify with their gender assigned at birth is, or what *you* think is acceptable. And it certainly isn't acceptable around *me*. You *can* and *will* be called out and correced.

What I absolutely LOVE about this ‘ad’ is that it is SO north-american centric it’s ridiculous. Thry used every political shit to explain their point like the whole world has the same. Brilliant. And laughable every time.

I hate America’s media, really. In Asia, Europe, and probably all the other beautiful regions too (I can’t speak for them) they have to deal with our influence - a lot of stuff is in English, they watch a lot of our shows, they see us dominating on a ton of social media. We get none of that. In school I lost friends cause they learned I watched anime. People give weird looks when anyone points out that the rest of the world exists, cause it’s not relevant. I don’t like that rhetoric. And that’s media, gosh the politics are terrible. They think trans people only exist in America? Really?
I swear transphobe are always like this. There are so many of them waving around American flags and stuff. And it confuses me, do they think trans people only exist in America? Are trans people trying to take down the American government? What do they feel the need to show so much patriotism while attacking trans people. Being trans and America aren’t opposite, they are barely even related.
Please 😀 do not include Canada in your response. The United States is on its own here. Canada was the fourth country to legalize same sex marriage. Most Canadaians shake their heads at what comes out of the US. Some places already have handicap and family bathrooms which anyone can use if they are more comfortable. It's funny how you mentioned the "I'm not gonna call you Timothy, I don't like that name so I will call you Matthew" thing, because I actually had that happen to me. I moved states when I was 12, and at my new school this girl didn't like my name because there was another girl with my name who she hated, so she started calling me "Sarah" instead (which btw sounds nothing like my actual name, doesn't even start with the same letter, or anything lol).
