  • I successfully transformed an old built in shelf in our barn into 2 tier quail Hutches! There are 4 hutches that are approximately 2ft x 4ft each - plenty of space for our 4 breeding groups! Lighting is simple LED white Christmas lights on a timer.

How do you handle clean out?

Every 3 days I will take a small gardening rake and use it to turn over the bedding, which extends the bedding life. When I'm ready for a full clean out, I used a broom dust pan to scoop the bedding out and into a muck bucket to take out to the garden for fertilizer. I have a cat carrier I put my quail in during full cleanouts. They know the routine, so once I'm done and cages are cleaned, I simply hold the carrier up to the hutch, open the door and they all file out back into the hutch!

Their is nothing wrong with the cage size. Specially for grow outs and breeding sets

Our birds have 1-2 SQ ft each in these breeder hutches, and 5+ SQ ft each in our outdoor ground pens. The breed standard for keeping coturnix quail is 3 birds PER SQ FT. So, Id say our quail are pretty darn lucky birds!
