    Great video! How has the newer ground enclosure, the one on the left, worked out for you now since you have had it for a few months? Also, how tall is it exactly? And have had issues with any of the birds flushing up and banging their heads on the top? Thanks!

      I have a few houses that are about that height, maybe 4ft tall. Every once in a great while (maybe 1-2x/ year?) I'll have a quail hit it's head and knock itself dead lol, but it's rare. I've also had them knock themselves out in a commerical quail cage, with only 12in high ceilings too, so in my experience the risk isn't any higher with different height ceilings

      @AliBell13109 3 месяца назад

      It depends how many quail you have, if you have 10-12 then the tote works until they are ready to go outside! More than that and you may need to divide them into additional totes as they grow :)

    How do you handle clean out?

    • @AliBell13109
      @AliBell13109 7 месяцев назад

      Every 3 days I will take a small gardening rake and use it to turn over the bedding, which extends the bedding life. When I'm ready for a full clean out, I used a broom dust pan to scoop the bedding out and into a muck bucket to take out to the garden for fertilizer. I have a cat carrier I put my quail in during full cleanouts. They know the routine, so once I'm done and cages are cleaned, I simply hold the carrier up to the hutch, open the door and they all file out back into the hutch!

    Thanks for sharing. My quail just hatched yesterday. Quick question. How do you fix the toes when they are curled from being in the egg?

    • @AliBell13109
      @AliBell13109 7 месяцев назад

      That's awesome! You can fix curled toes by taking some blue painters tape and making them little shoes that they will wear for 24 hours to flatten out their feet back to normal. Have a friend hold the chick so it's legs dangle. Cut 2 small squares of blue tape and put one on the bottom of its foot. Spread the toes out to where they normally would be and then stick the other piece of tape over top so the foot is sandwiched in between. Trim any excess tape edges. It might take a few minutes to accomplish since the chicks are so tiny and squirmy, but it does work! Just note that if you fix curled toes, it's best not to use that particular bird for future breeding purposes, as you don't want any genetic traits to be passed down from that bird. Good luck!!

    • @AliBell13109

      A cold bath while they go through the rigor mortis process helps to tenderize the meat. It's not 100% necessary, but is a common practice with poultry and game birds

I soak her foot in provodine iodine once per day and at the end of the day I put on a big glob of Neosporin (original formula no pain relief agents). Why do you bake the shells? Also does this take care of their need for grit? I have quail. What about grinding them in a blender? Is that too fine for them?

    • @AliBell13109
      @AliBell13109 Год назад

      Baking the shells gets rid of any slimy insides and helps them to crush easier. I would still offer grit, as they need the small stones to help their gizzards digest food. This is considered a calcium supplement, hope that helps!

    My quail are three years old and still laying seasonally when they get enough sunlight. They've never been under artificial lighting, because they're kept as pets and we don't rely on the eggs. I'm under the impression that Quail will be all out of eggs in 2 years if forced to lay all year round. Plus they won't live as long.
