  • Animated film of the story by Oscar Wilde. A giant, who finds children from the village playing in his beautiful garden, chases them away and builds a high wall around his estate. Then Spring leaves the garden and Winter returns and remains there permanently until the children manage to slip through a hole in the wall. Spring then returns. It has taken me 48 years to find this. I first saw it in 1974 after my brother died. We were all children. I never forgot this story. I tried to remember the title over the years. I would think "it was the something giant." Then I thought "the friendly giant," but realized he was not friendly (at least not at first). I searched "the lonely giant" and thus popped up in my search. Ty for posting this after all these many years. It is as beautiful today as it was in 1974.

      So sorry to hear about your brother,it took me about 30 years before I found it, I searched for this before thinking the angry giant was the title I'm 50 and see this as a child happy I found it,once again sorry about your brother

      I also saw this as a child and it impacted me greatly. Never knew it was an Oscar Wilde story. Fast forward to being in my 30’s and my brother found the book and audio tape which he gave to me for Christmas. I immediately played the tape and experienced the story all over again. It is one of the most cherished gifts I ever received.

      The “ building a wall “ song stuck in my brain 🧠 and I’m surprised that I remembered it word for word! I still remember when the CBC archive building burnt down and they put out a public post, knowing there would be Canadians out there that would have recorded the shorts on the family VHC in their home. The CBC asked for copies or to make copies to rebuild the shorts archive. I don’t know why they stopped showing these wonderful cartoon shorts unique to Canadian television, especially as they hold so many wonderful memories from childhood, they could start up again with a whole new generation of Canadian artists. Wouldn’t that be fantastic. 😊

      "Kati Searles" This cartoon movie was made in 1971 but I might have seen it on TV a few years later maybe when I had just turned into a teenager.. However what I recall is that it was presented in its entirety the first time I saw it, just like in this video, but in following years when it was presented, certain parts were taken out I guess so as to make room for more commercials. The part in which the giant is building a wall and a Celtic-folk like song is playing was cut out. Also the part showing the giant tearing down the wall ( it was reduced to just some quick clips of the longer part.
      I am glad to have found this video and apparently it is un-cut.

I dare never to share my beliefs but try to emulate Christ's lessons as best I know how. Jesus Christ is not a tale. He is Truth. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one shall enter unto the Father but by Him. The Bible is real. Every Word of it is Truth. We are seeing the Truth of the one world government Revelations materializing these very days.
      John 10:10 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
      If you are a Believer, do not be ashamed to proclaim it.
      Luke 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
      27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

      Just to say, your story mirrors mine. I also was very moved by this beautifully animated adaptation that I saw first when I was ten. Two years on now, you're also fifty. : ) The test of brilliant literature is when it breaks out of the confines of its own nation and touches people in other nations. This brilliant Irish wit certainly managed that. Blessings from the UK.

    Like so many others here, I am so thankful you shared this. I'm 40 and have been searching for this for decades. I remember watching this is in grade school in Ontario, Canada from 1982-85. I also remember it being on TV. I know I saw it numerous times.
    My memories were fuzzy, but I had been searching for: an animated short, I used to think was from the NFB and it featured a tree and personified seasons. My "child" mind grasped on to a woman who walked around the garden, her cloak leaving snow in its wake and I somehow made "Autumn" the artist and "the wind" tapped the shingles on the roof. Lol! It's amazing what the mind does and how strange memory is!
    Upon watching, it all came back. I had forgotten about the giant entirely (odd, eh?!) I also forgot the Christian elements. I, personally, am not Christian, but do come from that background and would have been a believer when I would have seen this.
    I could go on and on! I just wanted to thank you (and share!) You have NO idea how hard it's been to search for this with what little I remembered. 😊 *sniff*

      I loved this as a child - such an unusually delicate and profound work for Wilde. The message is beautiful enough, on a purely human level without reading too much into it beyond the wonderful emotions evoked. Though sadly I suspect that wont stop those fundamental Christians of low IQ - precisely the kind that Oscar used to ridicule! lol

    It is so painful for me to watch this now, but I love it so much I can’t stay away from it. So many great parts and music. As the best stories in faith are about children, it is these that pull a parents heart. How moving it was to see a giants heart touched by merely the presence of one small bird singing in his garden, and the small boy who was trying to climb into the tree. After he lifts the child into the tree, the giants heart thaws and he realizes how selfish he had been closing the garden to children. He takes his great axe and knocks the wall down. He never sees that little boy again but always looks for him. Many years later old and losing his sight he once again spies his young friend in his garden all alone under a tree in full bloom even though it was winter. He hurried out to the little boy but as he draws near he sees wounds on the hands and feet of the child. He becomes enraged and asks who would dare to wound him, to tell him so that the giant could get his big sword and slay him! The boy tells him “no - these are the marks of love”. The giant becomes quiet in awe and kneels down to the boy and asks “who are you?” The child says to him “you once let me play in your garden. Today you shall come with me to mine, which is paradise”. Hard to imagine anyone not moved by this story. I think of my little girl in paradise now and how she liked this story. Beautifully made by hand long before computers with wonderful animation.

    What a classic story. So wonderful and heart-warming. A giant, once selfish and cold-hearted for not letting children play in his beautiful garden, now had a change of heart until he grew old. But in the end, he was reunited with the little boy he loved and regained his youth in paradise.

      I've liked Wilde's plays and Dorian Gray since I was in university, but I only just found this video this year. I haven't had the opportunity to read the original story, but it's remarkable to me how a man so frivolous and witty as Oscar Wilde, who could tackle the darkness and silliness of life in equal measure, found it in him to make such a touching story about simple virtues for children. Honestly, I'm not even religious, and the yet the story of the Giant's redemption is so touching to me. And yes, the soundtrack they added here was brilliantly haunting and nostalgic.

    I echo all these wonderful comments above. I first saw this beautiful film in December 1974. We had just broken up for the school Christmas holidays. I had been playing football with my friend in the morning and we went back to his house for some lunch. His Mum made us some soup, we sat in front of the TV and it came on- for the first time, I believe, in the U.K. To say it had a massive effect on me is an understatement. Every Christmas, for years afterwards, I would scan the Radio Times in the hope that it would be on. Various versions were on over the years, but not this one by Potterton. In the end I managed to buy a DVD copy on EBay- I couldn’t believe my luck. It is just so beautiful and I love it so much. Thank you for sharing this on RUclips.

    I'm in Scotland. So the same for me. Dropped by the BBC, it seems. I'd heard that they had complaints about it being against Christian beliefs, by suggesting that the Christ child would appear in the giant's garden. How ridiculous. It's a child's fairytale. And the most beautiful and touching one I've ever seen. Evokes such childhood memories for me. And so it seems, for others. I've shed many a tear. Why shouldn't today's children be allowed to see it? It's truly magical. Rant over. lol.

      "Those who are well do not need a physician, but only those who are sick. So the Son of Man came not for the righteous, but for sinners."
      Wilde's understanding of the Christian message of repentance and redemption was spot on, and it saddens me that there are so many people in the world today who claim to be Christian but don't understand or appreciate Jesus' actual ministry.

    This is a really amazing collaboration between animators/producers/musicians/singers and an author they never met. Oscar Wilde (intentionally) didn't put many character details in about what the North Wind, Hail, etc. should look like, but the animators brought them to life brilliantly. And the children, too, of course. I first saw this as a 15-year old who was trying to learn to draw and it made quite an impression. It made me want to be an animator.

While yes the Giant does died as all mortals do, he is welcomed into Heaven by Jesus personally for how much the Giant loved the child and out of that love made the world a better place for many. So the story is not sad, but joyous for the Giant lives forever with God who loved him most.

  • @42lookc
    @42lookc 2 года назад +42

    My very poignant memory of this animated classic is of my 17 month older sister crying at the end, very frightened and inconsolable.
    Our parents started their family much later in life than most. Dad was 51 when my sister was born, and 53 at my birth. My Mom was 40 and 42 at those times. As I was a little boy, and little boys do not mature and comprehend things nearly as fast as little girls, I did not understand why she was so terribly scared.
    Back in the early 1970's, with me as a wide-eyed but clueless 8 year old, we saw this show for the first time. At the end, my 10 year old sister erupted in terrified, screeching sobs, clinging to Dad and begging him not to go. You see, at that time, our Dad was now already 61. My sister was absolutely panic stricken with the fear that the Lord would come to take our wonderful Dad, who was a large, powerful man, Home with Him, very soon, leaving us without him.
    Her fears were unfounded, as it turned out. Our Lord saw fit to leave us our wonderful Dad for another 37 years after that time. He died very peacefully, after supper, only two weeks shy of his 98th birthday, to go to live with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, King of kings and Lord of lords, in Paradise, forever.

      Are you sure it used to be on British TV every Christmas in the early 70s?. As far as I'm are, it has only been shown either twice or three times; in the early 70s and it was shown in October 1986 on BBC2. On the BBC Genome site those are the only dates that mention it, unless it was shown on a different channel (if it was channel 4 then it must've been after 1982). I don't remember it being shown at Christmas time, the only recording I have it is from October 1986 on BBC2. Maybe it wasn't this version that was shown.

      @@Embracing01 Hi there, I wasn't aware of the Genome site, but I found The Selfish Giant (directed by MURRAY SHOSTAK) This one. listed as shown on BBC1 27th April 1973, 25th Dec 1973, 14th Dec 1975, 26th Dec 1976, 28th Dec 1978 and 17th Aug 1979. So maybe not every christmas! The Happy Prince (glynnis Johns) is listed as being shown BBC1/2 on 25th Dec1975, 27th Dec 1976, and 2nd Jan 1979, so maybe not early 70's, but i do remember seeing them around Christmas time. Many thanks Embrace for alerting me to the Genome site.

    • @Embracing01
      @Embracing01 Год назад

      @@rustyexhaust9754 I don't know why my channel is showing as Embrace, it's something I set up years ago when I used to get involved with a local charity as I was doing videos for them. There's no way of changing the name and I can't be bothered setting up a new account and channel. Glad you mentioned it though. I hadn't realised it was shown that many times, but as far as the 1980s goes it was only shown in 1986. If it had been shown since then I probably would've taped a better recording of it on VHS, but it's never been shown on UK TV since then. I could do with uploading my Oct 86 recording of it, not brilliant quality but I do think the analogue picture and sound has alot more "soul" and warmth to it than this better quality version.

    Not having anyone near you;
    Building a wall and making them fear you,
    Saying you have no heart.
    You're a fool if you think you can live
    Your life without sharing sunshine and gladness;
    If you think you can live without love,
    You're building a wall of sorrow and madness.
    You're building a wall to surround yourself;
    You're just building a wall to protect yourself
    You're just building a wall to defend yourself,
    But you're building a wall that will break your heart.
    You're a fool if you think you can live
    Your life without sharing sunshine and gladness;
    If you think you can live without love,

      Some people are worshiping the spirit mammon over God. Important to keep that in mind as well. Money may not necessarily be the answer to everything, but our relationship with God is. It is movies like this 1971 version of Selfish Giant that while a lot of people may not necessarily know about this film it so moving that it appears to point more towards Jesus Christ than entertainment and making money. If I had not first seen this movie as a child from the library for example I may have not known about this film, but now that I have memory of this film any time that I see this movie online I can enjoy it regardless of the fact that it may not be as widely known and popular as other films from big name industries.
