Having seen the original and a different dub, this is in many ways the most butchered version... but also, the all-around best. These people knew what they were doing.
I've seen this same animation for the snow queen and it's absolutely one of my favourite movies! What is the original language if not English? I always thought the voices seemed a bit "off" although didn't put me off because of such incredible animation and story telling ❤️
@@emmanitamuscaria2104 Russian, of all things. ("Of all things" because I recall a Cambodian dragon fable about the cycle of tyranny on either this VHS or the accompanying one featuring Perrault's Beauty and the Beast. That may not have been a Russian production. But this definitely was.)
I wish today’s cartoons were like this for kids to see. Amazing avant garde graphics, they enhance imagination so much. Love this Andersen story, and imo every kid should watch it 😍
I use to watch this a few times as a kid and today I saw an illustration/artwork that triggered flashes of scenes from this and I could not think of what it was called or what it was about. I kept mentally searching and more parts came back in flashes and I could finally put enough together to google: children morphing into swans. And found it! So excited.
Oh god. I remember watching this everyday when I was around four years old. I never got tired of this. And I still love it as much as I did when I was 4.
To think no child might ever have the pleasure I had when my mother softly read these fables to me like the Swan; the little match girl, many others saddens me. Thank you for this.
True art. The music and drawings are superb. Russians made the best cartoons and animation for decades and were sought after in Hollywood after the Berlin Wall came down.

This is missing -- When Elisa throws the shirts over the swans, her brothers return to their human forms. (Sadly, the youngest brother has a swan's wing instead of an arm, as Elisa did not have time to finish one sleeve of his shirt.)
That's a real alcohol & tobacco voice. I can picture him sitting in comfy 1940's armchair. A glass of whisky beside him in little table, and smoking pipe in other hand, and reading the book to kids sitting in floor.
I wish I could find the version that I had as a kid, it had more 80s themed music and was in English. It's good to finally watch it again after so long though. :)

Sadly this is almost completely different from what my VHS version sounds like.... Ima have to pull them out and try to put em on disk to preserve them
Didn't know this had an English dub. As someone who watched the original during childhood I can say that it is much better in comparison to what is shown in the video.
This is a VHS I remember from my youth. At the end, there was a story called The Woodcutter's Wish - basically, woodcutter gets Wish spell from D&D, uses it to court princess, princess's evil advisor tries and fails to use it to his advantage. And there was a companion VHS labeled Charles Perrault, containing Beauty and the Beast and - here's what I really want to see - a crazy dragon-slaying myth which, to my memory, is metaphorical for the cycle of tyranny. Hard to believe that last is of Soviet make, but anyway, it was totally packaged by these VidAmerica people and if there's any way you could post that, I would love it.
+roseoznz Yes, but the original stays the original (the russian version), and it is strange to see that in every other version, they had to change everything.

This story is an exact replica of a thousand year old mythical Irish tale called 'The Children of Lir'. One of the 'Three Sorrows of Irish Storytelling'
I'm still looking for the version I grew up with. It had no narrator and when the witch made the frogs on the last one she said "and you my sweet. You will make her old." If anyone has found that version let me know.

The Shirley Temple Storybook show did a version of this story(but there were only three swan princes in that version).A few years later when I was in third grade,my teacher read it to the class.I later read the story in the second volume of a three volume series The Family Treasury of Children's Stories.
You should cite your materials correctly. This is a dubbed version of a Soviet cartoon from 1962 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wild_Swans_(film). Thanks for sharing the English version!
This is a heavily edited version of the original film. It includes scenes that have nothing to do with the original, which were inserted specifically for the English version.
I had a version of this on vhs with a completely different English audio track. It was under the name "The Princess and the Swans". I can never find this with that audio
Yeah, that’s super dumb, I’ve no idea who translated it like this. In the original they say: «Приказ короля! Преступную королевскую невесту бросить в темницу! Приказ короля! Приковать к стене, кормить одним хлебом, вместо подстилки дать ей её крапиву! Приказ короля! Завтра сжечь её на городской площади! Так приказал король!», which means «The King's order! Throw the criminal royal bride into the dungeon! The King's order! Chain her to the wall, feed her only bread, give her her nettles instead of bedding! The King's order! Burn it in the town square tomorrow! The King ordered it!» So, no straw or gasoline, just bread, and that is just to show her that she’s not to be treated like king’s bride anymore, but only like a witch and a prisoner.
I wish they would make a movie or even a cartoon about the novel "Daugher of the Forest" by Juliet Marillier (which is based on this fairy tale but has also a historical aspect to it).
In the version I remember as a child the evil queen/stepmother rubs her face with walnut juice(it does work as a dye turning things brown) and messes up Elise/Lisa's hair.
The English versions are cut and wrongly translated at times. I recommend watching the originals with subtitles. And I have to say, when I look back at my childhood, growing up in the 90s, Soviet cartoons brought me so much joy. But some of them have impacted me deeply. I was a happy kid, but I remember feeling deep anguish over the Little Mermaid, the Wild Swans, the Snow Queen, and the Ugly Duckling. Come to find out, its from the same author. Its too bad Hans was a pederast.
