Kristiansand, a Norwegian orchestra, playing a Georgian concerto . . . but then I discover that our pianist Mariam Kharatyan is herself this very blend, a Norwegian/Georgian performer. I've listened to this appealing concerto since the '60s and this performance brings out hidden assets of its greatness. A delightful discovery for me, much credit to you!
Brava to Ms. Kharatyan for an impassioned and crystal clear performance. Until hearing this very strong interpretation I never understood this work well, excellent tempo choices, and sensitive rubato with great attention to detail. Extremely impressive and moving!
Every element of this performance shine like a morning star. The refined and absolutely fantastic performance of Mariam, the in depth understanding and response of the orchestra with its conductor and finally the composition itself, that has never been thoroughly exhibited with its every single minute detail while retaining the mysticism it emanates, altogether would make Khachaturian grin in his grave....Aaaah that Flexatone... Bless your heart Mariam and bless those treasured fingers.
Thank you for an *actual* musical saw at 18:32! So many performances of this concerto don't even include a flexatone, much less a real musical saw. I should add that this is quite a good performance in general. Musically very well shaped; not pounded and not played just for showiness.
The slow movement of this concerto gets me every time. So perfectly crafted from start to finish, but this performance with the musical saw tops all others. Hearing those ghostly tones swooping above the piano gave this movement a whole new dimension.. Thank you!
Bravo!!! Felicitaciones!
This performance Mariam plays with splendid skill and exquisite technique and specutacular attire is beyond description , unfathomable , inspirational , graceful and comfortable to the ear and the mind From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
....have always been mesmerized and stirred by this strange and great work. this wonderful performance makes me so happy in ways i can't explain even to myself. much love to mariam.
Many pianists were reluctant to tackle this concerto after the blazing Kapell/Koussevitzky release many decades ago, which was almost universally thought to be unmatchable. But that was long ago, and a new generation has rediscovered this masterwork. Delightful to hear it in all its tonal splendor, masterfully performed. Bravo!
This interpretation is really stipendous! And this concerto deserves to be played much more often! Khatchaturian himself has conducted this piece without flexaton (first violins). That is also possible.
I guess, that there was no Musical saw (and player) available, because in that time, the double meaning of the term "Flexaton" wasn't known very well, so that most orchestras had a Flexatone, but no Musical saw.
There is a much applauded performance of this concerto with Thibaudet on RUclips. It is however far too fast and sounds more like Prokofiev or other "Moscow-Soviet" composer. Khachaturian was Armenian/Georgian which is another culture - this performance is slower and more sensual and feels more stylistically appropriate.
Sorry, but Thibaudet is on fire on this one. I like it very much and am fine with the tempi. I prefer it. Annnnnnddddd... let's face it, that musical saw is dispensable. Only my opinion.
Giordano Bellincampi was the Principal Conductor of the orchestra when this was performed. Perhaps he is the conductor. He was replaced later in the year by Nathalie Stutzmann.
Yes, apparently at least 7 people believed so...!!! They actualy look quite alike (indeed they even enjoyed very much the use of bright red dresses...). The air-cut and nose seem very similar, but the cheek-bones are more prominent in Mariam. I can assure you all that the pianist is Mariam Kharatyan. Believe me!

Wow😮 the magical musical saw 18:33.... just fabulous ❤
Her phrasing is the best I've heard in this piece. Brava!

Denna absolut oefterhärmliga musik brukade jag lyssna på på mitt sommarställe med rummet insvept i tobaksrök- har en LP med denna musik på.
Ack ja!
beautiful! exquisite and expressive piano at one with the superb orchestra
Musical Saw concerto!
Really a Brilliant interpretation i fucking love it
I absolutely adore this❤️❤️❤️
Excellent artists; great performance!!
Magnificent
Brilliant! Best from Mexico.

{6:46~7:51} just gives me new life!!! 😇😇😇😇😇
That’s an awesome concerto.
Musical saw - Yesss! 🎶💗
Hermosa interpretación. Apasionada....
Maravillosa interpretacion , Deja impactado.
Glad I got to see the saw. Too many orchestras leave it out. It provides the haunting sound necessary to the success of the 2nd movement.
Oh yes--the pianist is terrific, too. I love how she plays the part starting at the 28:20 mark. Gorgeous. One of my favorite passages.
Brilliant 👋👋👋👋👋❤❤❤❤❤
what a fiery 🔥 execution!

@@BegoneJonah Without the flexatone the passage is just a repetition of the previos passage - it's boring. Cut the flexatone, cut the passage.
@@keybawd4023 Well - I disagree. But I wonder why Khachaturian didn't score that passage for an Armenian dudek? Wrong register?
Dear >mariam, somehow I must organize it so that you can play the concerto in Spain.
18:40 I'm going to purchase this instrument and play it in my backyard at 2:00am on Halloween night to freak out my neighbors.
A brilliant idea ! I agree. That would be hilarious. I like the way you think. What a concerto.
@@ericdevaughn5941 lol thanks!
I was mad cause other orquestras don’t include the saw. Thanks
Look for the Peter Katin version from 70's
@@ramonbravi5094 sadly with Flexatone
Greatness!
Thanks for the great performance🌹
Vem spelar så fint på såg i andra satsen?

Why is the conductor not named, nor ever shown in close-up?

What's the musical instrument at 19:07?
musical saw
Flexatone.
Khachaturian, great georgian composer!!!
I thought it is Khatia playing
