    I love my Nreal (XReal now) glasses. I use them all the time with the steam deck and my laptop, and when I was traveling internationally, they were so great for the long flights. Don’t know if it’s worth justifying a new pair yet but I’m glad they have been improving them a lot.

    These have been on my radar for awhile, thanks for sharing some user impressions. Stationary mode is a must for me... so many times games put important HUD information in the corners of the screen, and it's easier to see those corners if that display stays in the same virtual spot. It's exciting to see this segment develop! I think someday these will be as essential as smartphones, or maybe smartphones will change in a way they are dependent on XR glasses.

    • @nickspeck
      @nickspeck 8 месяцев назад +5

      I have the Nreal Airs (original model) and I think they're exceptional. It really depends on your use case scenarios, though. An adapter is needed to be able to play any system with HDMI out. So if you have a Nintendo Switch you have to run it out of the dock to the adapter and then from the adapter out via USB-C to the glasses. It's not a very elegant solution. If you're only playing something from a phone or a tablet to not bother your partner in bed at night, it's much cleaner.
      Really it just comes down to what you're going to use them for. The video quality is very good in my opinion, but the audio, like Russ says, is lacking. So Bluetooth headphones or earbuds is a must.

    As someone with the original XReal air, I can tell you a big reason for the blockers on the X2s on the bottom is almost certainly feedback that there is a reflection against the lenses from things below you, especially in movie scenes where the screen gets dark. I'm watching Thor: The Dark World right now and wishing I had bottom blockers.

    I have both the xreal (nreal 1) and Viture glasses. I ended up using the Viture more often for 3 reasons: 1) it has a diopter adjustment per eye so i can wear them to bed without contacts or special lenses 2) it has the dimming feature that you like about the xreal pro, 3) it has a convenient usb c splitter that allows me to charge the steamdeck or ally while using it (that didnt work with the xreal glasses).
    My wife ended up liking the Xreal glasses because the tilt adjustment fit her face better. I think the image and brightness was also slightly better on the Xreal. The 120hz is a great new feature. I wonder if it is VRR too like the Ally.

  • @davidgordon3744
    @davidgordon3744 8 месяцев назад

    I have a competitor to these, and those light guards at the bottom id wager are less a bout blocking light to make it darker, and more about blocking the reflections you’ll get from your shirt and the area in front of your stomach / chest when using them. When using my glasses, in a bright room, if you are wearing bright colors, you will see it reflected in the optics that are meant to sent the screen to your eyes. Test with and without them looking for that reflection, and im sure itll. Be easily noticeable. The guard appears to be just long enough to prevent that issue.

    I have the original air glasses and love them for flights. I don’t really use them anywhere else though. That being said I rarely play games on them because I don’t want to give up VRR on my Ally display. I mostly watch movies with them. I love the pro dimming feature but I don’t think this is enough to upgrade. The 120hz is nice but without vrr it seems kinda pointless for me. The improved audio wouldn’t matter to me either since any time I’m using these I wouldn’t want them to be audible to others around me. If I was buying new and didn’t have v1 I’d get the pro model though.

    6:51 - The bottom guard likely is not there to stop light. It's there to stop reflections on the lenses from what is below you because the lenses are at a 45 degree angle. I have 3rd party blocker for the air one that has the bottom blockers on it and it makes a huge difference. Without it I would always be seeing my shirt reflected on my screen.

I bought the Beam when it first came out and have used it a couple of times but I haven’t personally found the added functionality to be worth the hassle of an extra device to plug in.
    I also picked up a set of Viture glasses (which I didn’t like as much as Xreal) and the Viture dock (which worked great as a mobile battery and portable Switch dock). I’m not sure if I can justify another set of glasses but the electro chromatic dimming of the Pros does sound great.

    do they work well as a monitor replacement or is this just for movie watching and gaming? It would be cool to have 2-3 huge monitors in front of you, a huge space saver. But apart from being huge, monitors also need to look sharp, crisp, and clear.

    • @justtiredthings
      @justtiredthings 8 месяцев назад +1

      I have the 1st gen, and yea, they work p well for that ( though there is a bit of tradeoff, given some ghosting and slight edge clarity issues)--certainly much better than something like the Quest 2. But that's only if you want 1 big monitor that moves with your head. Their software for multi-monitor head-tracking is really limiting (e.g. doesn't exist on Windows to my knowledge, and essentially only allows you to use browser windows on Android)

    How's corner sharpness compared to Air1 for productivity or pc use?

  • @podracer35
    @podracer35 5 месяцев назад

    The gaming use is pretty appealing in some use cases, but I think the potential of using this with my phone is the winner. Having the Samsung Dex experience ready to go without the need for an big external monitor would be pretty cool. Also side benefit of privacy when doing work or watching stuff while traveling.
    I still don't see myself getting this, but still great to see the technology continuing to improve.

    My problem with nreal/xreal is mainly the software. The glasses are literally useless as an ar device (which is what is suposed to be).
    They are great as an extra portable screen or to use it with dex in Samsung, but appart from that you can literally do nothing useful.
    And even worse, they have abandoned the nreal lights completely. All their original customers that bought the lights because they actually were ar glasses now have a very pretty paperweight.
    Even worse since now we even can't use dex, which was my main use of the glasses.

    The Air I have used to have major issues with gamma. Did they fix this? Also, the height of the screen didn't seem to work well. It was always to high or to low. For me I think this was because the side pieces were too short for my head. Did they fix this?

    The cables on these tend to wear out. Thankfully they're generic and replaceable, but I've gone through 8 or so cables for my Rokid Air since I got them earlier in the year. Over time the connection becomes worse and worse until finally it's near-impossible to get them to display anything. It seems USB-C isn't very robust when it comes to the connector having pressure on it, I guess the tiny pins inside must eventually stop bending back into shape even when I make a conscious effort to be very careful and avoid turning my head at all. It should speak volumes that I just keep buying more cables though, the lightweight HMD concept is very useful.

    • @justtiredthings
      @justtiredthings 8 месяцев назад

      Can confirm. It's an extra expense you don't anticipate. And the replacement cables I've been able to find are a lot thicker and less flexible than the original and apply somewhat uncomfortable pressure behind my ear.
      The connection issue is one of the main reasons these really need to be wireless to be an essential product.
