  • G'day guys, today we are reacting to Neil Young Heart Of Gold. Such a classic song and I loved how he went from a goofy kid talking about items in his pockets to singing such a great song.

I remember watching this as a kid when it aired on tv in the 70's and it still blows me away how perfect and absolutely "Ballsy" it was and still is. Talk about putting yourself out there all alone and just performing it like nobody else can. I've heard others do this song but will never capture what Neil did. Old man is another great performance on CBC in the 70's

I remember this song well from my youth... had to laugh at the line in the lyrics "and I'm gettin' old" coming from a guy his age at the time!

May I just compliment you on the lighting of your studio, your face gleaming out of that saturated blackness. Compelling. Robert, UK.

Pat, don't think that either live or studio is better, just different. Studio generally sounds better quality wise but live shows the performers personality and what their sound is without studio stuff that makes up for their deficiencies. There are many (a few hundred) great live performances of '70s singers and bands from The Midnight Special tv show that would be good to watch to get a different perspective of a performer. Neil Young is a prolific songwriter and has hundreds of songs in his over 60 year career. You might want to check out Ohio, The Needle and the Damage Done, Southern Man, Long May You Run, Tonight's The Night, Love is a Rose and Cinnamon Girl to only mention a very few.

Keep in mind when all this music from my youth came out most people never got to see a band live unless they did something on TV. We would wait for the weekend to record off the radio at midnight what ever Album they would be playing. That's how we got to here the whole thing not just the radio play ones. It was a cool time the Sunday papers would print the lyrics to one song week. Not at all like now where you can just pull up a song you want to hear. I was quite lucky to live in a big city and so I got to go to some great concerts. I would go to concerts to see if they could pull off live what they did on their records and more times than not they could. With all that said, I really enjoy your show. Keep finding treasures from the past and always Enjoy

If you watch later live performances of Neil the crowd goes wild when he starts blowing the first notes, here nobody had heard this before. You picked a great one to react to, I have everything he ever released. Great video, thanks!

In a strange coincidence A Horse With No Name was actually the song that knocked Heart of Gold out of the number one spot on the charts in the US in '72 🤔🤷

It's always better Live ! Neil Young could play with just an acoustic or a full band and sound great. I have a really good album called Decade that contains all his best songs from 1966-1977.

His first trip to London. He busked for change on the street then performed this for BBC4 in the same clothes he arrived to England in. Peace, love and wide eyed innocence and unbridled talent, 👍

While the song is amazing, it always hurts knowing how the words of the song are and how he treated Stephen Stills.
Definitely one of those "the artist vs the art" moments.

Glad you enjoyed that, I've been listening to Neil's music all my life and it really just gets better. Live or studio? you just never know, depends on many things and really at the end of the day it's subjective anyway... for example if you heard this and then the studio version you might change your mind...it would be a fun experiment at least.

Neil inspired me to learn to play guitar back in the early '70s ... and I'm forever in debt to him.
