- Here is a short video demonstrating an oil change on a common inboard engine. In this case I am servicing a volvo penta 5.7 engine. The tools and materials are linked below.

That was very helpful, thank you very much.
It’s not at all easier than a car because people probably don’t have that handy suction device and you can’t just ride out and get one. Nevertheless thanks for taking the time for the video you did a good job.
Me ha gustado mucho tu explicación para cambiar el aceite, yo tengo un V8 380cv. Y es muy parecido a este. ¿Tendrías más vídeos sobre el mantenimiento en general? Gracias
Thank you for sharing.
Just one tip, don’t pre fill oil filters, not on cars, not on boats, not on anything, the inner hole of the filter is the supply to the main oil gallery, any crap in the oil jug will end up in the engine unfiltered.
@Raffi Aroyan If you are using a brand new container of quality oil it will be 100% free of contaminants, I have no idea what type of oil you have been using but there should not be anything in the oil! Secondly filling your filter helps circulate the oil throughout your engine faster! People say that oil has additives to help lubricate your engine and prevent dry starts, I say BS! If engine builders pre-fill the oil filters before installing them on $200,000 race engines why shouldn’t you!
@@NeverEnoughPyro40 Hi! Have to respectfully disagree, I spent over a decade as a full time race car mechanic and a few of them building race engines, it’s not so much the oil that will have contaminants in it (but it happens), it’s when you open the container that you risk getting foreign objects in it, could be a a tiny piece of the sealing foil that ends up in the oil, if you pour it into the filter that little piece will end up in you oil gallery and the risk of damage is much higher than just leaving it dry.
Everything I have read makes it very clear that you can flush your engine with the hose fitting but it does not supply water to the impeller so if you run it with just the hose attached you will damage your engine. Right in the manual.
Service manual for this engine: "Volvo Penta engines incorporate an engine flushing port designed to flush the engine with fresh water while the engine is running." Older VP engines still require muffs.
@@ZentRose perhaps it is a newer model then mine as mine is a 2002. I can not attach a picture but it does indicate in Bold Print. Do not run the engine during fulshing uperation. The raw water pump will not draw water with the drain valve open. The pump impeller will be damaged. Best.
@@rjalbright1 Yes you are correct, I believe they switched in model year 2004.
This engine doesn't take SAE30? I have a 2005 volvo penta 8.1L gi-f. When checking oil level do you always measure after the dipstick is down all the way?
Nice engine
?Do you know how to change the oil for the volvo penta 5.7 GXi
How about a video on how to service the volvo penta drive?
I have VP 5.7GXi 2008. no previous experience with boats. I noticed it takes hours befeore oil in my engine settles completely, If I cheeck it 10min after stop it shows nothing on a dipstick. but tomorrow it is close to max. Is this normal?
Good job!)
Where could I find the power trim tilt reservoir. My trim Tilt has become slower than usual. Going up and down. I have a Volvo penta 5.7 as well.
On the left side of the engine, down right above the oil pan but beneath the sparkplugs is a hole. The hole looks like a dipstick location.
The plug popped out due to overfilling the oil. Anyone know what the plugs part number is or what it could be called? There are no threads to screw in anything either
We have a 96 caravel bow rider I think 19 or 20 footer with a 6.5L Volvo penta and I’m telling you these engines are the more reliable
That must be a fast boat. I have a 24' Chaparral and it has the 5.0
I wish it had a bigger motor. But at 35mph it gets Great gas mileage.
Do you know where I put the trim tilt fluid in. I also have a Volvo penta 5.7.
Don't mind me, just waiting for next video lol
Soon 👍🏻 I’ve been interviewing for the past month and just accepted a new job offer
Oh good, you're still alive.
Hurry up back, we need these videos LOL
How many pumps did it take to get the oil out?
Hey I just did this on my 5.0 gi can you send me the link to the oil extractor pump. Thanks.
here is the link amzn.to/2yRocz8
I have the Volvo 8.1. It looks almost identical. Does the dipstick tube go right to the bottom of the crank case?
My engine hasn’t had a change in a while from previous owner. We have a pump but it just is taking forever and the drain is not accessible from us so we can’t drain it. Any help?
Boats have big V8's??? Why am I just finding out about this
Angry Whale why would they not have? And a 5.7l small block is not that big ;)
boats need big engines :)
not sure if anyone here can help but i need to remove the old gas and put new gas in engine. my boat sat to long in 2019 i backed it out of my bout house put it in drive and it died. the boat is brand new off showroom floor and was only driven 3 times so i can only assume it is the gas
Hi thanks for the video ! I do have the same engine and thank you for sharing tips about the oil change. What type of oil do you use ? 10w40 ? Thanks
his link shows 10w40
What fuel consumption are you getting with that engine? I'm about to buy a bayliner with a 5.0L v8. I'm curious to find out how many mpg/gph it does.
It uses an enormous amount of fuel. I haven't tracked it but it can get pretty expensive.
@@ZentRose Thanks for getting back to me. Would you recommend getting one? I wouldn't be doing much distance, probably 3-4 miles tops in one sessuon
In my seaswirl striper 2301 about 2-2.5 mpg. Guzzler
@@TheOutdoor_Guy stay away from boats unless your a skilled mechanic or have a big check book
I have a 24' Chaparral with the 5.0 and at 35mph it gets great mpg.
Great video; thanks for sharing. I haven't taken my boat out in 2 seasons and need to remove the old gas. Any tips on the best way to do that? I tried using a syphon with the bulb pump but inserting from the gas cap it is too far of a run plus a lot of turns so the hose just gets stuck. I've see a few videos where they removed a hose from the fuel line going to the engine but not sure if you could offer any hints. I have a 2008 VP 5.7 GXI. Thanks
Zent, I have a cobalt 2001 206BR with the same 5.7 gxi engine, same color scheme, etc as yours. It does not have the direct water inlet hose that you show. I still have to use muffs. Is this something that can be added with relative ease?
Yes if you are handy it is relatively easy to add an adapter to your water inlet. Some people build an adapter, pull off the inlet hose and pop on the adapter when running their engine out of water. I'd imagine you could also buy the parts from Volvo but it would be pricey. They made the switch in 2004 I believe.
I have the exact motor in my new boat, havent changed the oil yet. I was worried about using the little water fitting in the engine compartment because I wasnt sure if the impeller in the lower unit would get water to it. But it looks like if flows down there when you start the engine. Thanks for the vid. How did you like that particular oil extractor?
The pump seems very solidly built and worked well. The only downside was the price. I also changed the impeller after I did the oil change and it was in good shape. The water hose engine connection is very convenient.
what is the make and model of the hand pump?
how do you have your batteries hook up I'm wanting to add a second battery to my boat.
The switch has three terminals on back. Main positive cable goes to the middle of the switch. Run A separate positive cable from battery one and two to each of the other terminal i’m back of the switch. Then run a negative cable from battery one to battery two.
i have a 2008 4 winds volvo penta 5.0 gxi. but i cant find oil filter on it!!!! where is it located?? i see the fuel water separator filter but can find oil filter. please help
Its most likely covered in a black plastic container top right it look like a cylinder air filter
I have this exact engine and I would like to check and change the transmission fluid, but I can't find the stick or port. Any clues?
Thank you!
Are you talking about the outdrive lower unit oil? On mine there is a 15mm hex head attached to a dipstick on top of the outdrive. If you lower the out drive you can access it and check the oil level and fluid condition. I change this oil every season (pull the props and pump the oil up from the bottom). I tried to make a video on this and decided not to post it haha. If you private message me I can send you a snap shot of the dipstick on my boat.
How often do you change your oil? My family has the gxi 5.0. We changed the oil around 40 hours ago but a few years have gone by.
I change it every season which is what the service manual calls for. I'd recommend a change on yours, it's not a bad job and keeps the engine happy.
How long you had that valvo Penta?
how much oil does it take ?
He mentions 5 quarts
He mentions 5 quarts
I have the same engine and got it running after over a year and all the oil spit out through the back of the engine in a matter of seconds. Not sure where its coming from, its hard to see back there. This isnt related to the video but maybe someone can help.
Did you make sure the oil pan drain plug was in or at least tight. After a year of not running perhaps you or whoever put it away last removed the drain plug.
Did you check the drain plug and oil filter are tight?
Oil filter adapter to block on port side
Easier then a car? Dont think so. No need to warm your engine? Now you got a percentage of old oil still in the heads.
Mate try using a better oil
Drive down before you start it please...
He doesn't say what oil he used that's what everybody wants to know
The Oil I use is linked in the description.
