Winterizing Volvo Penta 5.7 Gi
Hi Mike, I do have a suggestion for you on winterization. In my 5.7 GXi I never pull the drain plugs. You run the risk of losing them or stripping the threads.
When I do my boat for the winter, I attach a garden hose to the 5 gallon tank at the T.
This part is critical. Turn the water on and start the engine. Let it run for about 5 minutes or when you see the temp gauge hit normal operating temperature. Usually in a marine engine, it’s about 160°.
Once it reaches temp, the thermostat will open up and run water through the entire system.
When it’s at the proper temperature open the valve on the antifreeze tank while shutting off the tap water. You will need a shutoff valve attached to the end of your hose.
It’s critical that you allow the engine to achieve the proper temperature so the antifreeze can fully circulate to all points of the internal passages.
If you don’t allow the engine to fully warm up, you risk potentially damaging the engine block with raw water still in the engine.
I leave the antifreeze in all winter here in upstate NY. By keeping the passageways full of antifreeze and not air, you will mitigate any potential rust and scale.

Thanks for your video..... I have a 5.7 GXI and always ran antifreeze through the system with the same setup shown since 2006. I followup by removing my impeller housing and impeller from the housing for the winter. When I first did this back in 2006 I wanted to see if there was any water left in the lower manifold areas. I removed both plugs on each side and to my surprise there was still water. I ran all the antifreeze through at idle with a full jug (5 gallons). Obviously, the thermostat wasn't opened therefore, make sure you run the engine to full temperaure first, then go with the antifreeze if wanted. Removal of the impeller is recommended but, by doing so you loose the antifreeze. Thanks again for your video, good job. 😊👍

Why don't you hook up the hose to the hose nozzle in the engine compartment to run water then the anitifreeze?
The blue caped nozzle BTW. Can't you run the boat on that?
Great video on showing the drain points...but it's a bit misleading to those newbies that don't understand that using the muff system to get antifreeze into the system is not effective unless the thermostat is open. It's by passing half of the engine until then.
Thanks for the constructive feedback. I guess I was just trying to touch on the antifreeze process to show that it can be done. I personally do not fill mine with antifreeze, but I know a lot of people like to do it.
The thermostat is irrelevant for this procedure. It is not possible to guarantee the thermostat is open when running antifreeze unless you plan on running hundreds of gallons of antifreeze through your motor. If you drain the block as is done in this video and then you connect the muffs, the motor fills with antifreeze first, regardless of the thermostat. The seawater pump feeds the engine water pump and fills the block first. When the block is full the excess antifreeze will fill the manifolds and eventually exit the exhaust path. Any notion of the thermostat being in play here is false, as long as you drain the block before you connect the antifreeze, regardless of the motor being hot or cold, you will be fine. If you attempt to skip draining the block and instead run the motor until up to temperature on a hose and then switch to antifreeze you run a significant risk of mixing the antifreeze with the water in the block, at which point you're rolling the dice. All of that being said, as long as everything is properly drained, it is not necessary to add the antifreeze.

on the antifreeze - why would you not hook up the muffs first, run that for a while until you only see the pink antifreeze coming out, then disconnect all the hoses and stop there? I don't get the drain the water, reattach hoses, then repeat with the antifreeze approach.

Appreciated video 1&2 but I can’t find #3. Also can you provide a like to a good set of muffs? I’m new to boating.
Sorry about video 3 When I went to video it I found that my drain plug is seized so I am going to have to take it in to get un-seized in the spring than I will be able to get the 3rd video uploaded. As far as muffs go I'm not sure if there are any that are better than another... but that's a good question, if I find out I will make a video on it. Thanks for watching!

What is the problem with just running antifreeze into the system without draining the water?
From what I understand you want to make sure all of the water out.... the fear is that if a water/antifreeze mix is left in the motor it could still freeze, you only want the antifreeze in there if that is the route you go. You might end up going thru more antifreeze than you need to if you try to flush the water with it. Those are my thoughts on it but I'm sure there are many ways you could do.

I have a quick question, I have a Volvo penta 5.7 GS and after every saltwater run I have to run fresh water to flush the engine. In my case the Volvo penta 5.7gs does not seem to have a hole where to put a a hose to run fresh water through it. There is no hole on the inside or outside.. any ideas?

Great video, thanks. I have what appears to be the identical 5.7 Gi in a 2004 Blue Water. I cannot find more than the back two drains; no central drains or knock sensors on either side in the middle. Is it possible I only have the two in back? Thanks!
I think 4 is pretty standard on these, I would check with your local Volvo Penta Dealer, they may be able to look up your VIN number and be able to tell you. Sorry for late reply been busy with work and have not been on youtube for a while.
Some are just sealed off, ours is also. Removing the ones on the back was always good enough for us (along with the other stuff).
Do you need a tool for reinstalling the drain plugs or is it enough to screw by hand?
my manual says install to 22 lb feet.

From what I have been told you want to make sure there is absolutely no water in the engine. I've heard people say that if you don't get all the water out and the antifreeze mixes with the water there is the possibility it can still freeze. But I'm not an expert so I'm sure there are a lot of opinions about this, so you should do what you think is best for you.

Great question! I know people who say it doesn't matter and others that say to do it...I tend to lean on the fact that it is probably a good idea. I will look into that though...maybe I will make a video about it.
