I know many people don't like The Handler from Monster Hunter World, but come on man Alma is an entirely different character with no relation to World's Handler beyond being in the same profession!
Let's start that Alma has a normal voice acting, unlike the World Handler who had a really annoying voice. So yeah, I like the Wilds Handler much-much more.
Palicoes always "spoke" (at least since World since that was my first MH), but they didn't have VO. They'd meow and the subtitles would translate to your chosen language.
A lot of people hate that they talk because people tend to treat their Palico more like a pet rather than a hunting partner. They’re a fully sapient species with opinions and equal rights who can hold the same jobs as everyone else so I fully welcome anything that makes them more like characters rather than “an animal”
@itsturniptime3699 I believe those people will be able to change a setting to revert them back to just the meowing. I like the VA I just wish we make make a palico like the chef, I want at brolic palico lol
Looks like you got the handler from world mixed up with the new handler Alma. And me personally I never hated the handler but for some reason everyone else does but the new handler (alma) is more in the field with us supporting us with restocking items it seems.
Yeah, same. I never got why so many people disliked the World handler. Was it because she was annoying or something? I dunno. 😂🤣 I guess it was because she was so ‘unserious’. Like a clown character almost. That’s the vibe I got from her anyway, but I wasn’t that bothered by it tbh. 😅
@@thawingkarma233 The disdain for the MHW Handler stems from her exceedingly reckless behavior in regard to hunts. Multiple times she rushes off into the middle of a combat scenario with no weapon of her own, which means you have to bail her out before she gets killed. This happens often enough that your character actually suffers an injury (Iceborne) due to the carelessness, and she never apologizes. This combined with the fact that she consistently refers to the hunts *you* perform in a manner akin to *we did it* gets on a lot of people’s nerves. She logically does have a role and does it well enough, however the assistance she imparts is not enough to designate you as a duo when she often puts you in danger with her own idiotic behavior does not bode well. This is why she personally got on my nerves, as my hunter is busting his arse to make sure she isn’t getting eaten by dragons and drakes and she confusion refuses to just back off and let me work. That however is the fault of the writers for MHW, which has since been seemingly remedied in MHWilds.
It was so fucking weird to see people hate on the handler. Only complaints I saw were about her looks, so I just assumed it was the incels being their awful selves.
(Worlds hander specifically) I dont like her for 3 reason that are my own personal opinion. I dont like her bubble attitute(gratting to me), her constant desposition for getting into trouble( and there for me), and finally her voice, no hate i just dont like listening to her speak. All in all i dont hate her, i just actively dislike her. The new handler seem amazing in comparison.
I don't know what's up with the weird hate with Wilfs Handler? Are you guys thinking that this is the same Handler from World because that's a completely different person.
In the lore of MH, handlers are extremely important. The guild not only hunts monsters, they also help corral the ecosystem and make sure there isn’t too much hunting. Poachers are punished and rogue hunters are hunted by the guild. The handler is the only one that can legally assign a hunter to a quest once the guild has approved a monster’s need to be put down. The handler in MH World was horribly written, but everything we have seen from Wilds suggests they are putting an emphasis on the story and characters for the first time… you didn’t know that, but it’s extremely disingenuous to shit on her before she gets a chance to be her own character. Its the first time characters gets proper names, the first time our character actually speaks in cutscenes, and the first time the world has active people in the game besides just the guild that we always see. Everyone is excited at the potential of a good story and characters. There is no weapon you can button mash. They either require you to progressively do more damage by stringing together specific combos, and/or there is high key maintenance as you organize ammo, songs, or weapon mode. Some weapons are easier than others, but every weapon demands you familiarize yourself with the full suite of moves you can preform, lest you be stuck spamming the weakest attack the weapon has. If you’re truly curious what the game feels like, watch Ratatoskr’s video How to Enjoy Monster Hunter Combat. It’s short and to the point, and covers the nuances of the franchise without diving too deep. A video made for yall. MH is one of those games that I think you would both enjoy, but I doubt you would approach it the same. Every weapon is vastly different. As far as multiplayer is concerned, if you do play the game, don’t shy away from getting help or being that help for others. Unlike in other games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring, MH treats the difficulty in multiplayer a little differently. In a game like Elden Ring, if you summon help, not only do the bosses get more health, resistances, and deal more damage, the people you summon will also be nerfed if you summon someone who’s a higher level. They might have better gear than you and more health, but they will deal much less damage as they are scaled down to your level… Monster Hunter doesn’t do that. If you use the SOS feature, a monster will get more health and resistances, and their attacks may seem more erratic because you don’t know who they are going to attack next, but that’s it. You will never deal less damage if you are summoned and the people you summon won’t be scaled down to your level. In other words, if you summon an endgame hunter with the best gear in the game to a beginner level hunt, it can bring the hunt from 20-30 minutes down to a 5 minute hunt. The reason the game lets you do that opposed to other franchises is a fundamental difference in how your character gets stronger. Not worth explaining, but I will say it doesn’t feel cheap. Multiplayer in monster hunter feels far more rewarding than in a souls game because your progress will be acknowledged, and the multiplayer is the way they let you fully experience how far you’ve come. Once you have gotten better gear and are summoned by a beginner, you become the monster in the scenario. That was a lot. I am excited for the game. Choosing to play MH Wilds or Elden Ring is a no brainer. You will be rewarded far more in the MH franchise than in a souls game, and it’s far more addicting.
Damn, can we chill with throwing the "useless" name calling of a character before the game is even out yet. Not even same character, also just because a character doesn't hunt with us devalues them, sheeesh
I didn't really dislike the World handler, and I think she gets too much hate from the community. In any case this handler is an entirely different character from that one and if you are wondering, even this one will not complete her sentences 🤣🤣🤣🤣(I blame the writing)
The handler mostly catches strays for being kinda dumb (especially for an A list handler who is wildly incompetent compared to her peers) and mainly because she hugged my palico instead of him hugging me
Quick note, Alma and the Handler from Monster Hunter World are indeed separate characters. Handler is simply a profession, like a hunter. It was specifically the unnamed Handler in World that people often disliked, not the profession as a whole. Handlers in general as mentioned in the overview, oversee all of your paperwork so that you are allowed to hunt monsters legally. Think of them as wildlife secretaries. Alma seems competent in her work and new and veteran Hunter seems far more receptive to her personality as opposed to the old Handler - who got on people’s nerves for a variety of reasons. Give Alma a chance before writing her off, she’s her own person separate from the old Handler. Also quick fun fact: despite the games title it would be not accurate to call hunters _“Aggressive ecological preservationists”_. We kill monsters only as a last resort, such as their wrecking a nearby village or getting too rowdy around breeding season. Poaching is actually super illegal in the MH universe, and is punishable by death!
Their personalities are very similar, very bubbly and eager to help. The only difference is that Alma is hot and the Handler from World was deemed not so hot. People say she had a knack for getting in trouble but that's just an excuse lol. We want to hunt and will take any reason to hunt, so why does her getting into trouble and us having to save her like 3 times canonically in game give a reason to hate her? It was literally just how she looked lol. There's no better evidence than the mod for MHWorld that "upgrades" how she looks being one of the most popular mods on Nexusmods.
In monster hunter lore, Hunters aren't there to hunt for fun; they are there for population control. Just like deer but there are also poachers and the Guild (The Governing body) Essentially kills poachers. The Guild Knights hunt them down.
I'm interested in those lines from Nata (the little boy) about Arkveld ("The White Wraith"). It looks like that boy wants revenge for his village and is questioning why the hunter doesn't just kill Arkveld on sight. I'd be interested in a plot point regarding the actual role of hunters in the Monster Hunter universe. They don't just kill monsters on a whim. In fact, according to lore, unauthorized poaching of monsters is a criminal offense punishable by death. That's why you hear someone shouting something along the lines of "Guild authorization confirmed" when starting a hunt.
The handler in wilds is not the same one as in world, like all characters in wilds and unlike in world, she actually has a name (Alma) and so far seems very likeable and helpfull. Some people like the world handler or just don't mind her but objectively, she didn't serve a purpose gameplay-wise and in the story she was prone to getting herself into trouble, resulting in the hunter having to save her. Calling her useless might be a bit of an overexaggeration beacuse of her story importance, but her carelessness was definitely annoying. Just saying this cause I think some people will try to gaslight you into thinking otherwise.
Wdym she didn't serve a purpose in game? She's literally your handler. She takes care of quests. They all do the same thing. You could talk to her or the quest board, but you can do that in previous games as well.
For the mainline games this is the first time that the palicos are voiced. Before this, they just made cat sounds and had subtitles. However, the stories spinoff games had voiced palicos.

Alma seems a little less...intense... than the World Handler, lol. There were points in World where I wished I could turn off side dialogue because it became distracting after the tenth hunt in a row. I didn't hate her per se, just got a little annoying at times.
Well when it comes to whether or not the palicos can talk it's sort of yes and no. If I remember the lore it's that they do talk it's just that in most older games they just meow and you see what they're saying in subtitles. But there is an animated monster hunter movie where the palico in that talked like a human and in the spin off series "Monster Hunter Stories" the palicos talk like humans too with humans understanding them. So lore wise, yes they do talk, gameplay wise they just started to give them a voice instead of just meowing.
I just can't help but smile when I hear familiar voices, mainly from dubbed anime and I'm super excited to continue using my character from MHW now that they're gonna have their own voice.
In this version the palico can talk to make it less required when you hear a Meow to look at the text to see what they did. You can still go into settings and turn off talking. I'll try it with talking for a bit cause they're kind of cute, but the monster hunter veteran in me says make them meow. We'll see.

Without the handler, the hunter needs to deliver his loots, negotiate and trade, report to the guild, manage supplies and handle the logistics. Without a handler in World, you can't see monsters on the area before the hunt, upsurge in mining/materials nodes, you can't create multiple tents for fast travel. If you are an idol in Japan, the handler is basically the manager in lore. This reminded me of an old cutscene in 4U where countless hunters are swarming a merchant and rushing in to get the rarest item in stock, Aiden (the mohawk guy) unfortunately got his ass bumped many times and never got something to buy so I think the handlers are assigned to avoid those too.

I appreciate that world's handler was so aggravating her entire profession now has to prove they're different out the gate lol.
