- The Colorado Avalanche traded out of the first round in the NHL draft, and then went goalie hunting.
The Avs made a pretty smart trade in getting out of the first round and picking up some desperately needed draft picks in this year and next year's draft. When all was said and done the Avs added nine new prospects to their pool. Three of them goalies with Ilya Nabokov being the key name.
Free agency is set to begin at noon eastern. With no Jonathan Drouin deal in place, are the Avs chances of signing him dwindling? Or will both side come to a deal?

Raised an eyebrow after seeing they moved back and took a goalie before setting out to the internet to check him out. Nabokov had a .930 GAA during the season and a .942 in the playoffs with four shutouts in those playoffs along with winning playoff MVP and the team winning the Gagarin cup in a 4-0 sweep. Watched some highlights and he’s a human save highlight reel. Does that transfer to the NHL? Not sure but I like the reach and with him, they get a player who realistically could be wearing burgundy in the 25/26 season opposed to another developmental player who’s likely 3-5 years out.

If there was a player i want to see the Avs keep its drouin right now. And when Cogs retired i assumed that would free up enough wiggle room for him and mittlestat. But maybe not i guess.

Anything can happen but at least Colton made it to July 1 without getting traded, so that's a positive... hope they can keep Drouin too.

I remember Nabokov’s dad ending a playoff run for us when he played for SJ. I hope he can have a similar game and I’m excited to see him play

IMO CMac should be able to stash Landy on LTIR until he moves Val out. If he can't, that's a big L, especially when other GMs so easily have done the same thing.
Those contracts keep me up at night
The problem is it's easier to do that when you know a player won't finish a regular season compared to the expectation they will return during the season. You go spend their money now and then they return as expected and you're stuck in cap hell

NHL ready? A goalie noob? What is it like 5 years till they're usually ready to start?
As a KHL rookie he posted great reg season stats as a starter, then the Gagarin Cup MVP as he led his team to a championship. Impressive, most impressive. Francouz played one AHL season before becoming an NHL regular. Shesterkin split his first N.A. season between NHL & AHL. Sorokin went straight from KHL to NHL, but was 24 yrs old. 25-26 might be too early for Nabokov, but maybe not.
