    I did ballet for 15 years and my teachers always tried to correct my posture by saying imagine I had a pole or a string pulling me.. but I could never seem to get it!!
    I did this in the mirror and everything clicked into place, thank you so much!

    Dad said that slouching is hurting my back. I told him that I slouch so much that good posture hurts my back worse. LOL

    • @Bmoney902
      @Bmoney902 8 лет назад +29

      Fixing my posture was often painful and the worst by far was fixing my upperback/shoulder blades. It hurt the most as it's a relatively little-used area and gaining mobility there was more painful than splits. Luckily though it hasn't taken as long. The exercise that fixed me was swan arms- it looks like you think it would but as you open the arms to come down they make an arc up over the head, and backwards so the shoulder blades feel like they're coming together and the upper back is almost pinched. It's a subtle movement but you'll feel the effects for days and when it stops hurting you can stand tall.

      paultheuglydog same issue. The unused muscles hurt when trying to keep good posture.

      Your dad said this because he cares, even though it sounds critical. If you think it hurts now to have good posture, wait till you see how much it hurts to slouch when you get to 50. Ima guess your dad knows. Most people over 50 do (or even 40) unless they were an athlete or in the military.

    Thank you so much. You seriously gave me a really explanation. I started to have this arching posture around 5 years ago so my lower back hurts almost literally everyday. And today I just finish my very first adult ballet class. The trainer said we made a great posture when we arch. There was this one woman that really arch so much her body and the trainer praised her for her "good posture". Now my back is hurting so much I wanna cry. But with this video I hope I can correct my mistakes.

    I really love these types of "basics" videos. Sometimes I forget these things, or haven't really been taught these things "officially"
    I have a quick question, my ballet teacher says I am not using my back enough in my pirouettes and that it makes my arms drop or look "dead". Do you think this means I need to make sure I am doing that back pinching thing?

    • @kathryn_morgan
      @kathryn_morgan  9 лет назад +13

      AriRHen Yes I believe that is what she means. Really use your shoulders and torso when you turn, and put energy in your arms so your elbows don't drop. Hope that helps! xoxo

    This is so much more helpful than the “string on head” & “engage your core” advice. I have cervical spondylolisthesis (spellcheck doesn't even recognize that condition-it’s not spondylosis!!) & it does a number on my shoulders & shoulder blades. Constant pain.
    I’m really working to strengthen those between-the-blades muscles but I am nowhere near the kind of pinch you can do!

The problem with my body is that I have poor posture because some muscles are either too tight or not strong enough, so maybe a tip for some people to feel whether that may be the core problem for you as well.

    Personally, I adore this “doso shocking guide” posture treatment that you can also look up on Google. I have slouched most of my adult life, and was ultimately motivated to fix my posture after a friend of mine commented I was slouching at the gym. This guide is teaching my muscles fix posture. Right after using it the very first day, I could already distinguish the difference in my posture.

  • @shanwowproductions

    Love this video! One thing that I get corrected a lot in class is about my posture. When standing and getting ready for an exercise I'm usually held well. Whenever I do a tendu/glisse/ dégagé derrière , my teacher ALWAYS corrects me about pulling up but I don't think I'm correctly feeling it, therefore I'm not actually "pulling up" to standards. When standing I feel the strength in the lower area of my torso (near the bladder) and I keep holding it in class but the teacher still corrects me about it. So the main problem is that I think I am holding in my core well but not the correct way..? When I turn I am also told that I stick out my pelvis- even though I still feel that sensation in my lower torso. Other than that when I am corrected on "pulling up" I usually just end up sucking in my stomach and holding my breath for the whole exercise. Any tips?

    My head is so heavy with thought, that it’s weighing the spinal column down. Imagine a bowling ball on a wet stick.
    Low room temperatures with thin clothing causes slouching as the body attempts to create the arching to keep a warm inner core, so I put on a warm sweater to decrease slouching . 😁💕

    • @kathryn_morgan
      @kathryn_morgan  9 лет назад

      Alicia M. Hi Alicia! That sounds so frustrating. Make sure you are really stretching them out after each and every class. Sometimes if your muscles are too tight they can burn. Also make sure you are eating enough potassium - bananas are a dancer's best friend. That should help with muscles burning too!

    Love your video's and tips, I have a question. When I fix my posture I tend to be shorter of breath. It feels like I don't use a part of the volue of my lungs. Do I use the wrong muscles to lift my chest up or is this normal? Do you have any breathing advice during dance, in yoga breathing seems to help a lot.

    • @98breadandbutter89
      @98breadandbutter89 8 лет назад +1

      +XxEvYx I think you are probably trying a bit too hard to fix your posture, you should try to relax into it a bit more; don't stand like a stick and hold your breath, try to breathe and find where your posture is correct, and you can still breathe. Also holding your posture and taking deep breaths should help :) Hope I helped!

I've tried pushing them down, they don't stay. My left foot is like perfect and my arch is alright I suppose. It's just I can't point my right foot much at all because those toes don't point. This has kept me from training deeper in ballet. Do you have any tips? Great video by the way. :)

      Patricia Brady I had/have the same problem; for me it was due to scar tissue build up after some injuries. Try physio or massaging/warming up your feet really well. I'm basically stretching/massaging/working my feet constantly and it's started to improve.

      Patricia Brady Both Eliza and Jodelle are right! Massaging your feet out will REALLY help!

    Instead of permanently self-correcting, isn't there any exercises or practices (other than Ballet) to normalize these improvements? Any equivalent of ballet but more masculine???

    Q&A with Katie: Were you born with 180 degree turnout and natural flexibility, or did you have to work up to it?

      She doesn’t has 180 degree turnout bc her joints weren’t build like that, she actually doesn’t has much natural flexibility but she worked up to it, she has a workout for turnout you could try!!

    I practice my posture anytime I'm sitting or standing, I've been practicing my posture for about 3 months now, and I still catch myself slouching every once in a while. why isn't the practicing posture working ??

      Try thinking of having your tailbone pointing down

      Hey, I know you posted back in the summer but what you describe is a slow process to fix so maybe this might help still. I found that if I imagine a straight line drawn from my pubic bone to navel that needs to travel directly down to the floor I naturally straighten my back. I struggled against my back for a long time trying to tuck and suck in and lean and all that but this is the thing that has made the biggest difference. Also forcing turnout with exaggerate this hyperextended back, so if this is part of your problem turn in a little until you have the correct alignment to be able to turn out better.

    All this time i thought my posture was good. Before, I do have an idea that I always slouch. And when I stand straight, my classmates would always say that I'm just trying hard to look like I have boobs😂 So i thought I was doing it wrong and so what I did was I made sure my back was straight but my shoulders aren't align with the back😂😂 Turns out it still wasn't right.
