I am an Expert lever racer and I own the S-Works Epic Hard tail. It is an amazing bike and would recommend it to anyone that does not want to compromise. Very light weight, Stiff to get the power to the ground. Lightning fast, handles amazingly and climbs like a mountain Goat. I will never own another race bike without the Brain System! The Brain works amazingly well and instantaneously. I must admit I miss my last S-Works Epic Full Suspension and that my next bike will be the new S-Works Epic Full Suspension. With that being said, The Best money spent for those on a budget will be the Expert Epic model. It is literally less than half the price and you will still get 12 speed with carbon wheels and the brain System. I have ridden many Bikes and I have been blessed and I am in a position that can buy whatever Bike I want and I choose the S-Works Epic. I hope this helps. Have a great day!
For Christ's Glory Amen thanks for your words. But I noticed the Carbon Control wheelset is only 80 grams lighter than the Aluminum Control. I am still torn between Epic Expert and the Comp.
I want to buy the Expert hardtail, as you mentioned great bang for your money! I don't want it for racing, but do want it for long Epic ride 40-50mi XC and some light trails. Would geometry on this bike be good for what I want to use it for?
I'm a procal owner, it does what I require, fast, light, comfortable. I just change components as I go and the seatube flex really does work taking out the sharpness.
I hope Danny will get a trek procaliber and do a review on it. It will help lot of people who are considering this bike. I for one will be getting this bike in the future. So let's hope you do a review if possible. Cheers!
love the Procaliber BUT, I'm 5'9" 192 lbs and I know of guys that race at 6' 160 lbs and they cracked the seat stay, Trek replaced it with no problem but who wants to go through that. I don't race so I went with the Specialized epic comp.
So here it is 2022, I usually ride Specialized but I couldn't get an Epic Hardtail so I went with the Proclaimer 9.6. The thing was a tank stock, so I put a Brain fork, Roval Carbon Wheels, and SRAM AXS Eagle. Now I really like the bike.
Rolled the dice on an Epic Specialized HT Comp that is coming to me from a far off shop that couldn't move a 2018 leftover (probably because of the color, eye-gouging pink). The box is somewhere in the air right now - wish me luck!
It’s really interesting to see the different ways they’ve gone about it, with the special brain fork, the isospeed or the Scott which focuses on no gimmicks and lightweight. It would be interesting to see how the others compare, but there are so many brands out there. It’s almost impossible to differentiate between them all.
Hey Sickbiker! Have you ridden a Specialized Chisel? I'm looking for that complementary hardtail which complements my Trek Remedy 8 very well for those rides you need something light and fast. But I also want a pretty comfortable bike. Ive heard good things about the Chisels frame! It seems good and comfortable. Would you recommend this in front of something like the Cannondale FSI 5 carbon? Would love to hear your input. Aluminium vs Carbon. Is it ALWAYS more comfortable than aluminium or is it the opposite?
Somebody previously asked about Orbea Alma and Canyon Exceed. One could also think about Giant or other brands. For sure, I would add Santa Cruz Highball, probably my favorite.
I've got an old Olympic Julian Absolon orbea alma carbon with xo components and hope brakes. It's an awesome frame, super fast just puts all the power on the ground. I can still cycle the dust off some people on 29ers with my 26er. 9.7kgs the only thing i struggle with is that the people free past me while I'm pedaling on downhills. But uphills are a different story
I had a Rocky mountain frame to flimsy and it broke on jumps. I am telling you some of these little guys can handle the fragile bike just fine but if you are a BIG VIKING you MUST get a Scott Scale definitely a very strong robust frame. I had a Giant talon 1 so fragile!. Be careful with super light thin aluminum frames they break if you big and strong! Scott Scale is the BEST!!!
got a question, is it cheaper buying a built bike (low grade components) or buying piece by piece (medium grade components)? will this help you save money? *frame is the same by the way.
Fritz Leonidas i think the most important point is ergonomics. If that fits choose a ready to go bike that you can afford. The frame should be a good quality one, the fork from the mid range and the drive train something like SLX (I have no experience with sram). As I mentioned ergonomics is most important so save some money for a good saddle and grips. Yes wheels are also important but that is something what you can postpone if you feel that you need a lighter one.
And to you question :) it’s usually cheaper to buy a build bike. The bike manufacturers gets some special prices. That’s the reason why some peoples buy a top bike and sell the expensive stuff and replace it with cheaper ones to make the bike in the end cheaper.
@@goonswarm007 would you consider the value of the fork too? i mean my friends said that it is better to have a more expensive fork than a cheaper one?
Fritz Leonidas that’s of course a question of the budget. I would recommend the mid range ones because usually they are the same as the top ones just a tiny bit heavier and just a bit less features but more stiffer and durable. The cheapest are more heavier and really basic (rock shox the silver models). I have found these link maybe that’s helps a bit. off.road.cc/content/feature/your-complete-guide-to-the-rockshox-fork-range-1842 @sickbiker comparing forks would be a good topic. Silver.. Gold.. World Cup... a lot of nasty stuff 😂
You are swaying me to get a procaliber then instead of a rc spark. Would you say the procaliber is able to do marathon type of rides/races kind of comfortably? I've always been on a 26er hardtail so to upgrade to an 29er compliant hardtail would be a good leap on its own!
You didn't mention anything about boost spacing. Are all these bikes now using boost spacing? I've heard that is going to be the new standard, is this true?
It is the future. So many speed in the rear requires more and more space. They need to give more space for spokes for stiffness. And then, you need boost for crankset and that is not cool for me. I'm road rider and that q factor is too much. I believe that all these bikes have all boost components.
High Modulus Carbon frames are not 100% is a Mix of low modulus !!! maybe 25% high modulus if it were 100% High Modulus the frame would Be TOO STIFF unrideable and not Compliant !!!!!!!!!!!! MARKETING JARGON to sell to the MINIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For sure and I explain that, using a glas in another episode. The high mod fiber is first of all brittle and so it needs to be mixed with other fibers, otherwise the frame would break. I was just thinking, whether or not there is ANY high modulus fibers in the cheaper carbon frames.
What do you mean? More money = better components, smoother more precise shifting, more durability, and mostly a lot of weight savings which translates to more comfortable use (carrying bike) and much better performance. You don't need to be pro to feel the benefits of it. For pros this is mandatory cos of huge advantage it gives (if one would pick worse bike they would lose), but even for novice - you *will* feel better and more expensive bike in every way just as much.

BCJ 080 that will come down to wheel weight and tire tread pattern. Physics doesn’t care what names the bikes are called.

Scott Scale 965 is the only one I could find in XXL.
Spec Chisel has the same geometry as epic and it is made of aluminium.

Notice that in 2020 Specialized made their Epic's a little more relaxed, similar to the Trek. Meaning more comfort.
