As someone who tried to learn western sheet music but hated it because of how confusing it was, I love qin notation! It looked super complicated at first but it actually makes a lot more sense to me than western music notation. I also already know a lot of Chinese characters from studying Japanese so It makes even more sense how the characters are arranged. I’m seriously considering buying a qin now

i was just rewatching The Untamed yesterday and wondered about the book lan wangji to play the guqin. this is so so interesting to learn. it seems so difficult, but you make it seems so elegant.

I'm so grateful for this video! I'm attempting to learn how to play this beautiful instrument but there are not very many recourses that explain it so clearly and easily like you do here. I know this isn't the main focus of your channel but if you ever desire to share some more about how to play or learn more about qin I'm sure I won't be the only one grateful.
Once again, thank you very much!!!

Hi vveredragon, I share your feelings about the video, and I am also trying to teach myself theguqin, without a teacher , because there are none here. However I stumbled on this channel which clearly shows the hand positioning left and right while playing the “the untamed” scores. If you are into the untamed scores. This might interest you. Hope this reply gets, to you, i am not very familiar yet with commenting on videos. Good luck with your studies. ruclips.net/channel/UCv-EBQEmX2Avjy3x_mb3UNQ

I also started learning how to play from my love of cdramas and there is literally one good book in English but my gripe is lack of notation for cdramas scores that isn't modernized that I can find. Mostly because I don't know how to read music period. Learning guqin notation was surprisingly easy for me because of that though.

I am a bass player and I must confess, I love the sound of the Guqin. It reminds me a lot of the sound of a fretless bass, which is my favourite version of the instrument. I would love to have and learn to play the Guqin but unfortunately we don't have them in Brazil and to buy one from abroad is very expansive, but who knows, maybe some day!

  • @jts1702a

    Hey AvenueX:
Great video, but here's a bit of mythbusting: Guqin is not the only instrument to use fingering-based jianzipu. The 25-stringed Se (and subsequently guzheng), and woodwind instruments such as di/xiao/xun/chi also used to have their own jianzi system.
The pipa, OTOH, are among the first instruments in China to implement a pitch-based written music that doesn't use the pitch names itself. Look up "Suzipu" 俗字譜 for more information. This system eventually evolved into the Gongche 工尺 notation used for most instruments and opera.

Thank you much for this tutorial, where you demo how to play a part of the untamed on the guqin. The untamed soundtrack, made me fall in love with the beautiful tranquil sound of the guqin. So much so that i actually acquired a guqin and am now teaching myself how to play it. With help of youtube and a good book.(standards of the guqin by Juni L. Yueng). I have some music experience so hopefully not a complete lost cause. Unfortunately in my part of the eu, where i live, guqin teachers are non existant :-( . Since i love the untamed music, i am going to use your demo, to practice, to see if i understand the theory! Thanks again!

Hi AvenueX, I have practiced the this line of music now, on my qin, for 1-2 hrs. And (surprisingly) qin music is flowing out, which sounds like the first line of the Untamed, which makes me happy. It is not very smooth yet, but will keep at it. I wouldnt have been able to do it without your instruction video. Up to now i have only been able to play this tune on the violin.

This is amazing! It’s so much more simple to read than the current western notation. That system just messes with my mind, I have to rememorize it all everytime I have to use it, or keep counting lines. This way is just so much more clearer, like a simple code.

Hi, this is a really good tutorial! I just started playing the guqin- I'm wondering what yours is tuned to? I do not have a guqin tuner and am using a piano tuner to tune my guqin currently, would it work? I have my strings as 1=C, 2=E, 3=F, 4=G, 5=A, 6=C, 7=D based on piano tuner. However, when I play what you're playing it sounds a little bit off but playing other tutorials it sounds similar-- wondering whether you have your guqin tuned differently?
