Four nails and a cut pinky nail on right hand, all cut nails on left hand - believe it or not classical guitar is the exact same! Thanks for sharing, great info.
THANK YOU. Plain thank you, you're a goddess! This may be the fullest ever review of guqin as an instrument that we've come across on the internet that isn't a guide of some sort. What it looks like beneath, tuning, fingering, hands placement. Also, the drama comparison is absolutely GOLD.
Well you can have a look the untamed team really did not leave even a minute details like this too. The posture and the way he play qin is all perfect even his hands on string are very well depicted.
Thank you so much for this video, and for the one about notation, too! These two were what allowed me to actually start learning this. I live in Estonia, and wouldn't be surprised if I were the only player here... So finding a teacher is out of question. You explain very well, and there's too few tutorials on playing guqin in the internet overall. So, thank you again!
Thank you SO much, this gives me so much more insight into a beautiful instrument that I didn't really understand and explains it in such an accessible way.
The Umtamed brought me here. Gu qin is such a beautiful instrument, I like the idea that "playing gu qin is a way to talk to yourself". By the way, thank you for your recommendation in the decription box.
I have just bought one and opted for this instrument because if the similarity between guitar and music scores I really liked this introduction for its simple easy clarity and little tips to help me start playing guqin I look forward to watching her tuition again
Thank you for this well-presented video on this beautiful instrument. Cellists and qin players have at least one thing in common: thumb calluses! I hope you make more videos featuring the qin.
Such a lovely demonstrations; your hands are quite beautiful when playing; would love to see more. While listening, I realized how well the instrument adapts itself to quiet contemplation.
Thank you SO MUCH for these explainer videos! I'm watching a lot of tv shows to learn mandarin and work on my listening skills. I'm really interested in the culture, obviously, and I find watching the tv shows to teach me a lot, but I can't take enough of these more detailed videos about the rich culture and history of China. Since watching the Untamed I became quite obsessed with 古琴 , thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I'm so glad you made a second Guqin video! I learned so much from your first one and really enjoyed this one as well (especially your playing samples and explanation about Nirvana in Fire). You really are that gentlewoman scholar who understands qin qi shu hua!
Wow... second video of your’s that I’ve watched and love your style of presenting and walking through. Also learned a good deal about Qin from your explanation! Had not realized that it was a contemplative instrument..sounds like something I would like to learn.
It’s fair to say that the origin of the guqin is still unknown. It is true that the Chinese people consider it an indigenous instrument, and it is known to have been in China for over 2500 years. But sometimes we really want certainty when we can’t have it. It’s importance to the Chinese culture historically is undebatable.
Just waiting for my first qin to arrive, and I’m busy trying to learn as much as I can. This was incredibly useful and very interesting. You play beautifully as well. Very inspiring. I hope you make more guqin videos... Thank you!
Thank you for making this informative and instructional video. I've been considering getting a Gu Qin for years and this video gave me a much better understanding of the instrument.
oh wow, never thought you could play the qin! so cool!!! and thank you so much for this video, it's so enlightening and just added my knowledge. I'm a fan of Chinese wuxia tv series and usually they have the heroes playing the qin, so I've been curious about this instrument for quite long. I especially liked the music in Zhang Jizhong's Xiao Ao Jiang Hu/Laughing in the Wind 2001. do you think they really played it with the qin?
Thank you for this explanation and for sharing your musical ability. When you played the seven strings from low to high, I realized that you use that musical bit to open all of your videos. Nice! I get annoyed and distracted when actors fake it while playing instruments on camera, most notably on The Untamed. I realize, though, that it would take a lot of time for actors to learn the correct movements. And editing time would be enormous. So, I try not to look at the hands! This is one of my favorite videos that you've made. Thanks again!
This is excellent! Best video I’ve seen so far. Although I have just inquired a Guqin and have yet to get started. Hopefully it is in tune or I can learn to tune it. I’ve saved lots of videos on this but hopefully this will be the one to get me started. Where would I buy new strings if I need it.
I have a feelings you would released another video about Gu Qin... and i got goosebumps when i hears the ten mile of peach blossom theme song. I really love GuQin music.... please release the full song theme of ten mile of peach blossoms
Thank you so much, I would love to learn to play the Guqin but for now i just hear it on youtube. Hopefully when I get to travel to China I will manage to hear it live.
Thank you so much for your intro to Guqin. I would love to know more on how to listen to those tranquil tunes that one plays on this very ancient instrument.
This video is great! Very informative. I love that you played a song from Inuyasha haha How long have you been playing qin? Could you do more videos on Chinese culture in general?
Nice, thank you for the insight! ^^ And the links as well, the 1st one is just hilarious XD Hehe, now I want to find the scenes in the dramas where I know Qin is being played and see just how wrong they did it XD But it's kind of baffling as to just why the drama people wouldn't do it correctly especially considering it's their own instrument, like, why do it wrong? Do people in China, like, overall/the majority know how qin is supposed to be played? Or is it simply not general knowledge? But even if it isn't...that's so lazy on the directors part or whoever is responsible for it, not looking it up. Within less than 10 minutes I now know the correct way to place it, where to sit and the hand placement, thanx to you. How come directors ignore these 3 things?
Hi, my friends and I really like your recommendation, first impression and reviews. You really give us a good insight and it also make us to decide if we are going to watch this and that.
KkitKkat Yeah it’s a completely different instrument than the zither that is 古筝 Gu Zheng. That one is much bigger than Gu Qin, and with a bridge in the middle, and with more strings (usually 21 strings). They also sound very different but I like both.
Nombre Apellido I think Gu Qin has more than 3000 years of history and is absolutely the oldest instrument in China, while Gu Zheng is around 2000 years old. So although Zheng has been very influential internationally, it is much younger (comparatively) than Qin. And I suspect one of the reasons why Qin is less influential despite being so ancient is because it is so “philosophical”, contemplative and arguably “upper class”. As a result it was difficult for commoners in China (let alone commoners in other asian countries) to be familiar with and appreciate this instrument, since most commoners (as well as the power-hungry government officials and businessmen lol) back then preferred instrument-as-entertainment that is to be publicly performed and enjoyed, rather than spending contemplative, self-reflecting time with Qin that was preferred by scholars and nobleman. I know all instrument can be used for both contemplation and performance, but as mentioned in this video, Qin is unique in that it is specifically designed to only have the former purpose, and it can’t even make loud sounds, so it’s not very adaptable to other purposes.
i really like this video. i love qin but it is impossible to get it in my country and even if i got it there is no one to teach me. your video was very helpful and want to learn more about qin thank you
I thank you So much for talking about the tuning, because I bought A 古琴 last year and still don't really know how to tune it. I noticed that the tuned tones are like the melodies of the song 沧海一声笑. So basically I tuned it after A song. I also searched on RUclips for tuning, but There wasn't One with english introduction. The reason I bought it, is that I fell in love with, exactly What you described, the sound. The sound for me is more on the "colder" side, but still with A hint of warmth. Basically that is the best way I Can describe that. I would like to ask you, if you could please tell us about the notes, that are used for playing 古琴 in china!
ok that mean chinese moviemakers dont know chinese music intruments and how to use them?😅 I really like the Guqin, such a unique sound and i think its great for reliving stress and contemplating. Thank you for the insight.
@@陈诗濡 I think this is because of the influence of one's Mother Tongue experience, the first spoken language that anyone is born with. That was quite interesting. At first I was confused when you said it takes "ears and ears" then realized you were saying "years" :P
May I ask what's the difference between these two in pronunciation? cuz I always thought they are the same, so confused.
