Good Training lecture. I've been in varied Law Enforcement/Security jobs since 1979 and have carried several weapons, either by choice or mandate. I carried a S&W Model 586, .357 for 28 years and a Glock 17, 9mm for the last 6+ years. With modern ammunition the 9mm now is capable of attaining the "stopping power" of a .357 Magnum of 36 years ago when I went through the Academy. I shoot equally well with the .357 (Loaded with .38+p, 125 grain) as with the 9mm Glock (Loaded with +p, 115 grain). After using 'speed-loaders' for over 3 decades I can reload my revolvers as quickly as I can switch magazines in my 9mm's. If given the choice carry whichever gun feels "right" in your hand and not what the plethora of experts tell you. With modern Ammunition (Corbon?!) virtually all mainstream calibers are equal in Stopping Power. Don't be too defensive about your choice of weapon, caliber or ammo. If it feels right to your hand and you can keep 'em in the X-Ring any argument is a waste of your time. Been there, done that...
I know this is an old post - But, a 125gr Gold Dot from a 4" 357 magnum @ 1450fps does not have the same stopping power of a 124gr @1090fps. There are many advantages of using the Glock over a 357 revolver. Unfortunately, stopping power is not one of them. Respectfully. In any case, the determining factor will be where you hit the perpetrator and his motivation to continue that will determine stopping ability.
I am a Dinosaur who still likes Revolvers, and .357 mag . But that said ; don't get overly distracted over marginal hair splitting about the Most Best- est ammo . Heck , depending upon actual or perceived specific requirements relative ranking of parameters , the answers aren't always the same . ( i.e. , For shooting thru car bodies, windshields , fortified crack houses , barrier penetration, and barrier blind performance is considered desireable . For Courtrooms, subway platforms, or airplanes , etc avoiding over penetration is important . For general all around use , somewhere inbetween . The better loads in 9mm, .40, and .45acp ( and .357Mag, .357Sig, 10mm, .45GAP , and others ) are all highly effective , and individual loadings will overlap Other charistics of the specific pistols will be larger determing factors , than the calibler per se .
@@northof50now I have shot both of those caliburs. a nine is a joke compares to a 357 magnum OR a 45 calibur. 357 will HURT your hand after a few rounds a nine you can shoot all day. a 45 is lots better than a nine too. nines are for the ladies round here and for puttin MORE rounds in the small hole! want someone stopped? 357. want to tell someone you dont like him? 45. the nine jus tells people you are armed, come get some!
No offense but the title is "firearm selection". Sidearm selection is a smallish subset of that and "service firearm" selection is an even smaller selection that only applies to security and police.
Here is a subject for an educational video - hot topic: One thing about the "use of deadly force" has been vastly underrated; and, that is when the creep is going away from you, deadly force is not allowed because he/she is not a clear and present danger. Pardon me; but, now the creep is a "clear and present danger" to EVERYONE out there. I must answer to a much higher authority than someone in a black robe in a fancy room. If I let the creep get away and he/she does serious harm to a child or others, I'll have to answer to Yahshua, (known to the world as Jesus) why I let the creep get away when I had the ability and RESPONSIBILITY to drop the creep. We really buy guns for SHTF, road rage, mugging, drunk attack, car jack, gang attack..etc. my plan is: pick a rifle and pistol, buy a set for every family member, preferably the same caliber, I'm a .22lr guy. Now for the rest of your time, if SHTF, any family member, any time or place, is able to use any family gun immediately. Kinda what armies do. My grand mother, wife, sister, nieces and teen daughter joined a woman's shooting club and they shred bullseyes every month with their own walther P22's and ruger 10/22's.
Wow. Ayoob recommends a 40 hour course just to get a carry permit?! I like the guy, but dude... 40 hours is excessive as a requirement for concealed carry. 8-9 hours is reasonable.

Thank you. I was getting frustrated.
If it's going to turn into ball ammo it should be a big ball.....i LOVE it. I've carried a .45 for years in Montana....one more good reason
Perhaps Mr. Ayoob can explain hollow points to New Jersey lawmakers.

9mm will NEVER be on par with . 357 mag.

Four inches? I'm sure you're quite familiar with that length but I don't know it applies to a duration of time.
