- This week I talk about Photo Printing Resolutions. I printed 6 different photos with different settings to see what they produce and see what I could get away with...the results from this are very interesting.
I now know what dpi I need to set when printing my images. If you take photos, I suggest you start printing your photos as well as it teaches you so much about photography and will help you look at your photos and get a better understanding of what you need to work on.
Now there is more to printing than just clicking print in photoshop or Lightroom, but this test gives you a little insight into what resolutions and what DPI rates you need and also how these can change with viewing distances.

Thank you, Mike. I've always struggled with enlarging my photos, due to not totally understanding the dpi, print resolution and megapixel of the camera relationship. Your vid helps a lot. I will confess, I'll need to rewatch it several times to let it all sink into by feeble brain cells. FOOS FOREVER!
Haha!! Thanks so much Robert!! It’s one of those things that takes a while to get your head around. The best thing is to just start printing, even if it’s little 6x4 images for picture frames...it’ll teach you a lot about your photography as well...I’ve changed a few things since I started printing my images. 👍

That’s a great bit of info Phil! Thinking about it, I bet there are plenty of apps that would do this job...apps for everything these days! 😆
...and that’s a simple equation to work out whether it is good for printing or not...and will be especially helpful when you want to print big images or have cropped in to the original.

Awesome truth. Thanks. Just moved from SLT into A7III, so I'm on a new learning path... my first lesson, even Sony A-Mount glass is slow on the LA-EA3, my second: Sony 24-105 is gorgeously sharp but on mine the bokeh is pretty grim if too contrasty.

I heard the LA-EA3 does have a bit of lag when focussing. Such a shame as some of the the a-mount lenses are great.
The g-master series of lenses for the a7iii are amazing...I always hire the 16-35mm and the 70-200mm f2.8 and they’re fantastic...much better bokeh as well.

A Mike Smith tutorial for breakfast today. Printing is something that I would like to start doing, but I have not wrapped my head around sending them off or investing in a decent printer. You would think that they mine the ink in far away lands for what they charge for it, but the satisfaction of taking the image from concept to print seems more satisfying to me. Do you use a service or print your own, Mike?

I just have a middle of the road standard printer and for small prints up to A4 it’s fine. For anything bigger, I get them printed at a local print house...it’s worth having a search around for a good one...I normally get them to do a few test prints first on a variety of papers to see what I like...them once I find a good one, I’ll get them to do all my printing. Alternatively, I send them off to an online company and I’d do the same.
The main thing is getting your exposure right...what looks good on screen might not look so good on paper...
I’m definitely going to do more videos and tutorials on this as it’s quite a tricky one to get right. 👍

300 dpi is for canon printers. Epsons however are optimised for multiples of 90. So 270 dpi , 360, etc.
That’s good to know mark...it’s always good to check your printer specs to get the optimised dpi for the brand you have.

The easiest way I've found to get around this issue to know if I have enough resolution for a given image in capture one and lightroom is to set the crop dpi at 300, when your actively cropping itll let you know the maximum print size for that crop based on 300 dpi dynamically as you crop in and out, rather than seeing if its "sharp" to your monitor. Also some printer services such as Millers and Mpix use 250dpi printers so you'd want to set your crop resolution to 250dpi rather than 300dpi to know your maximum print size for the resolution given.
For images you’re going to be viewing at arms length, I totally agree with you Erik.
And also it’s a good idea to find out the dpi of the print house if you’re outsourcing. I’ve seen a few issues with banding when the dpi is different from image to print house without making sure everything is the same.

Good tech info and real world application, Mike. Was waiting for you to speak to the infamous “squint factor” that makes images look much better. 😁 But seriously, is there an app, web site or table (outside of photo editors) that simplifys the math and recomended settings? E.g. print size, cam resolution, DPI, viewing distance such that I could quickly determine, say, best dpi for 42mp cam, 8 x 10 in image viewed at 1 meter.

I haven’t seen one and I didn’t find one in my research for this video. One problem is that as people see things slightly differently, one person might agree with the settings and another might completely disagree, so I think it is quite subjective...
Interesting video Mike. I always struggle with the printing side of things.
Although I have printed an image from my Sony a7iii at 75cm x 50cm and was very happy with the quality.
I am just wondering how much further I can push it.
Thanks very much Aaron. It’s a harsh learning curve and can teach you a lot about how you edit your images...it’s very different viewing on a screen to viewing on a quality piece of paper.
That all depends on the viewing distance...I was surprised at how much this changes what dpi and resolutions you can use.

I think you should! I’ve got a printer at home I use but for the bigger prints, I use a local printers as they have huge printers!!

I’m using one of the Epsom home printers. Can’t remember which one at the mo...travelling at the moment...most printers these days are great if you use the right paper and the right dpi settings for the printer you have.
I’m going to be doing more videos on printing later in the year as it’s a part of photography that a lot of people struggle with.

I'm a printer and we deal with people every day bringing in low rez images/artwork and expecting it to look the same blown up.

what is the resolution in DPI for absolute best results in professional photo printing (like Art albums)?
It all depends on the size you will be printing at.
I have found with printing that you have to run a lot of test prints before making the final product, otherwise there will be issues that you might not have been aware of.
Experience is priceless when it comes to printing.

9/10 MP is it enough to print for clients? Because I'm using a 30mm crop lens on a Full Frame 24mp but only can produce 10mp. Can you help me out? Thank you
Hi Joao,
It depends on how big you'll be printing the images...I'd say you'd be better to go bigger for printing. The front of the National Geographic only needs a 6Mp image but that's an A5 publication, so you could print up to A4 with top quality...any bigger than that and you'll start to see the pixels...but if the print will be viewed from far away, you will be able to go bigger.

Thanks Ankit! The best 70-200mm is the g-master 70-200mm f2.8...it’s quite pricey though but well worth it. I hire it every time I have a big photo shoot as it always seems to deliver. 👍

This might not be relevant, but how do you get good resolution for Instagram uploads.. Everytime I upload something; I end up having quality loss. Help!
I think Instagrams uploads are either 1x1 or 4x5 crop at both at 1080p
For Instagram I always output the images with a long edge resolution of 1920.
You’ve got to over-sharpen them a little and also up the contrast as they really do have a low resolution when showing them in their app.
As Instagram was only meant for mobile apps, I don’t think they’re too worried about showing the images at a high resolution...just masses and masses of content with low data rates...
I think the app Vero is a much better one for high resolution images...

Why not just print at the highest dpi regardless of size if the print? Just make it that much sharper.
Thanks for the question Bob. I think this kind of thinking started the megapixel battle between companies. And if this principle was followed verbatim, a billboard would have to be taken with a 15 gigapixel camera...also if you had 24megapixel camera that seems to have been around the standard for a few years now, at 300dpi your max size would be around 20x10inches.
Personally, I’d prefer bigger images than that and with a slightly lower dpi, you can print a much bigger image.
