- My Manitou Mastodon Video: • Ultimate FatBike Fork?...
This bike is pretty sick, although the Farley has been out for some time now even in this configuration the 2020 version is great to see. The Mastadon Comp is a huge step up from the earlier Rockshox Bluto forks, the NX eagle and Dub crank are nice. The most impressive part though is the addition of the Rapid Drive 108t rear hub. That make such a difference compared to the typical lazy hubs factory installed by most brands. Let me know what you think in the comments below & Don't forget to subscribe!!!

Great review! Bought this bike in August and love it. Just ordered the stud kits for ice and snow
Good stuff. Keep the mountain bike reviews coming.
Will do, thanks for watching!
Sweet, sweet bike!! Great review, James! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
That rear hub is nice. I've got it in my Pro line 40's. Nice job. Thanks
Thanks for watching. How do you like your Line Pro 40s? Must be a great wheelset
@@Jamesthebikeguy yeah they're great. I've got them mounted to a 2019 carbon stumpy and am running 2.8 Rocket Ron's. Very confidence inspiring.
I just bought one of these and I love it. I ordered the stud kit as well, waiting for that to come in. In the meantime I posted one short video of me riding it; the trails were too slick without studs so I had to cut my ride short.
The studs are going to help for sure 👍
I’m ordering this bike next week. Do you still have a favorable opinion and how did the studs work for you?
@@aaronmoore7315 yes very well I love the bike and the studs were a perfect addition.
While I’m washing my bike, I noticed that the rear though axle was loose. Does it happened to anybody here too. I’m new to mountain biking.. is it normal for Farley or any through axle mtb? And I’m hearing a noice from the button bracket whenever I’m hard on the pedal.
I have a 2019 Farley 7, added a 35 mm stem, dropped the front sprocket to 26T, studded both tires, added CF bar to keep the hands warmer. The bike is awesome, love the new paint scheme. Great bike for technical riding in the winter.
Nice, the Farley is a nice bike!
I have specialized fatboy with bluto but am looking at this. I've never ridden 27.5 fat. How does it compare in your opinion. Also what did you pay for the bike?
@@jimjigga Jim, sorry for the delay, working in RI and just got bat from Kingdom Trails in VT. Last year I test drove 5 bikes at Colby College, 7" packed snow. All were 26" except the Farley 7 (2018 model). The 27.5" took off like a rocket, rolled over everything, I like technical riding, yes in the winter. The Farley 7 is the balls, especially with studs and clips it will climb every thing with those wide tires aired down. The biggest reason I want the 2020 is the extra gear (though my Farley as set up is geared down lower than the new stock 2020) and I love the color.
What do you think of it after owning it? Im considering one. Random LBS has a 2019 closeout for 2,000 bucks. Bike let ya down ever?
@@cbrmike69 Its a great bike, Are they selling you a 2018 or 2019, is it black or Orange? $2000 is a great price for the Orange (2019 12 speed). Mine is a 2018 but I dropped the front sprocket down to 26T and actually has better pulling power than the 2019 12 speed if you do the math. Try to get them to throw in studs, you have put them in yourself. You can also convert to tubeless by using FATTYSTRIPPERS liner conversion, much cheaper and easier than conventional. The bottom line is it has never let me down. I was out in 5" of wet souping snow mud and ice two days ago. The bike is like a tractor. GET IT you will never question the purchase. Steve
Great review I appreciate all your information as usual. I do custom builds that are not cheap let's juss say, I look at other brands of course to see what they doin and trek is nearly impossible to beat with the creativity of their builds, the quality, bang for buck and to Me above all.....their innovation.
I have a cool fat bike but this one really got me thinkin. I am building a 29 + right now which I believe is the future of mountain biking and everything if done correctly. This is close.
29+ could definitely be more popular in the future. It surprises me that it has not yet taken off.
Do you have a site where you show your builds?
Nice big bike. Lets see some trail action footage.
I've got some trail footage of my 2018 Farley on my channel
Wow!!! It's look so nice!! Thank you for sharing enjoy ride keep safe God bless.
You too
Great review ! Love this bike!
Thanks for watching!
Great review, debating on fatbike
nice.
Beautiful bike! Wish I could afford it.
One day!
Nice video! What’s the suspension travel?
OK, let me guess. This bike LIVES IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER.
...because Farley
Bike lives in the basement, well cared for, not blemishes, climbs well with the 26T up front and clips.
SWSMTB SWSMTB
Search RUclips: "SNL Farley"
Lmao I just finished watching Chris farleys videos before watching this video
dnxl
👍🏽🤣
Or because Farley had what you call a minor weight problem.
Looks nice
Sure does!
Is there any way to fix the frame and fit 4.5" rear tyre? Is that mount the only reason why smaller rear tyre should be used? I guess it can be removed somehow. Have my Farley 5 for a month now (M sized). Overall the bike is fantastic, yet I'd prefer to have both 4.5" tyres.
Great review. Think this would double as a decent trail bike? Looking at the fuel, but like the idea of winter riding.
Definitely!
Sir will thinner tyre be compatible to the rim?
Great review my most watched site what state are you in
Massachusetts
The dropper cable insert into the frame is upside down. My frame had the same issue
How did you get that solved?
I have this bike. I find it a bit sluggish and heavy, because of the good but heavy Mastodon fork, ant the heavy Gnarwal. The tires have too much rolling resistance, for summer riding. Not a lot of tires options either, in 27,5. But a beautiful bike indeed :)
Considering its design, not sure what should be expected out of a massive aggressive fatbike.
@@Jamesthebikeguy I've had 4 other fatbikes. For summerrides, this set of wheels/tires are on the heavy side. The mastodon suspension are great. But it adds 2.4 kg on the front wheel. Not exactly a playful climber 😉 The Gnarwal are not suited for summer. And unfortunately the selection of 27.5 tyres are very limited in my country. If Jumbo Jim only made this wheelsize as well...
LBS has a closeout 2019 for 2,000 bucks. Wondering if i should pull the trigger on it. Was gonna sell my fs Trance and get a specialized Fuse...but am curious about this fatbike life. How does the bike perform? Any regrets?
@@cbrmike69 I really love fatbikes. They are a bit slower than 29". But so much more fun. The traction is sooooo good. I only ride fat or plus tires 👍😁
Would be sub 30 lbs if you ran a carbon fork. The mastadon shock is super sweet but really heavy with the weight penalty. Great video and super nice bike. No carbon frame though.
Thats true, but I think the fork ads some 4 season useability. The Farley 5 tubeless is sub 30, mostly because it is the same wheels, no dropper, and carbon fork.
James are you saying the fork adds beyond snow use?
For snow/winter only use, I'd go with the Farley 5 (no fork). This bike is way too heavy with the fork.
Any opinion on how much better the Mastodon Pro would feel? Im running the Bluto RCT3 now. Hoping I can save some money and see an improvement with the Comp
It would not feel good enough to replace the Bluto, but IMO I would choose a Mastadon over a Bluto if you were starting fresh. In your case just keep enjoying the Bluto you aready have.
Nice bike . I'm 6' and going bikepacking and looking at the 1170. 29" with racks . ? Witch one ? Home on the road .
1170 is a good choice
My next bike
awesome!
Precio x favor. ?
i cant wait to have one for snow riding . no suspension fork though. i don't think i need it in the snow
You will enjoy it!
You will want the fork for the snow.
Gosh I like this bike .
What do you love lost about it?
Jamesthebikeguy , I have a love for the way Fat Bikes look . It has a aggressive looking style which I like .
I live in Florida thou and I’m not sure how effective a Fat Bike would be for our type of terrain .
May not be the best but sure would be fun on the trails.
Wouldn't it be great in Florida? Sand and flat?
JimJiggaNYC , yes it works great
The color reminds me of candy corn.
💯
I'm thinking to upgrade my Trek DS to a Fat Bike. What would you recommend between Farley 5 and 7? I'll be using it all year round for sure. Which one is better in winter 7 with front suspension or 5 with carbon fork?
Year-round, the 7 with suspension is a good bet. I'd just swap the tires for something like the Barbagazi so it rolls better in the summer
Awesome, I love watching your videos BTW... Keep it up.
How much does this fatbike cost?
no internal wire mounting
How to get this in INDIA..?
too bad me in Sweden trek only have farley 5 and farley 9,8 i'm so mad they both have no suspension...... if i want with suspension i have to order it outside :( in this time with covid 19 i may have to wait like 3-4 weeks or maybe more until the bike is here... so
i end up with farley 5 it's a nice bike catch lots of eyes :P
would it be stupid, or smart, to do a 27.5x4.5 up front and a 27.5x4.0 in the rear? only reason i ask is the fattie im getting is a full suspension so the rear can't take a 4.5. but I was thinking semi mullet? also, what's your recommendation for fastest or best 27.5 fat tire?
Nah that should be fine
I want it 😫
Review some hybrid/ road bikes.
I am a Ubereats delivery boy. Which bike would be good for me....???
Check out my video on the Trek FX2 Disc. It's on my channel, pretty recent and would be a great bike
Great bike . Im looking for A bike packing fattie . would that fork work?
As long as you don't need front rack mounts
Can you recommend me the best fat bike for offroad under 3000$/€
I bet your local bike shop would be happy to!
I have the Farley 5
Cool!
You wouldn't want to put in or take out all the snow studs for those tyres too often!!!
Typically you only install the studs once.
Putting studs in tires after you've been using them all summer without studs is "fun".... when the holes are full of tiny rocks.
Most would do that from the get-go
what tire size can you run on a 29er set up?
3.0
Can you run a 26 x 5 05 inch tire on this bike?
That would be tight
What size frame is that? Thanks.
Medium
I never get the point of these bikes, what do you use them for that wouldn't be more suitable for something already running 2.4" upwards?
Snow, Sand, Fall leave coverage... Tons of things. Yet another tool in the quiver to have a great time on a bike!
@@Jamesthebikeguy maybe it's just because the UK doesn't have any of those things in any great abundance
*Please, how much does it cost in dollars to save? Put me a link on the Express website*
Check with your bike shop
*I am from Iraq, please how can I order this product and how much for the price*
That’s a lot of tire brother lol
Yeah buddy!
When will you review marlin 7 2020?
Soon
@@Jamesthebikeguy alright, good luck
Great bike . The front suspension is use a waste of time with these tyres.
What about sweet jumps?
@@jasonbosworth8549 nice tyres and very nice bike! I’m too old for jumps
I have a 7 and a front suspension is awesome because I have been riding on ungroomed, post holed Snow Trails. If you're riding on groomed trails or flat pavement, then the farley 5 is the way to go.......
Great bike, but 15” frame is to small for this whells and this external cables isn’t beatiful.
Price??
In Canada, it’s around $3500 including the tax
@@drofder1884 thanks
Meh so over orange lol... Although I did have orange Marlin and then orange Roscoe, trust me I got silver EX lol!!!
Nice! How do you like your EX?
How do people afford these bikes I’m way to young and broke to participate in this sport ima go back to tennis
Nah, you work up to these things!
I will trade you my brand new bike for your youth
Come on remove the dork disc🤣🤣
