    You did a great review of the specs.... Thank You.. I just got this.. and am smiling ear to ear... I love the smooth, tapered and painted frame, so beautiful. However, I HATE those C-clip cable ties.. They always fall off. I will probably be using a lot of zip ties in the future!

    Riding a borrowed 2016 Farley 5 right now(cracked my old fatty and waiting on replacement). It's wild that the alloy frame hasnt changed in that time, but it's a solid platform so why mess with it I guess. Lots of other changes (1x, dropper, carbon fork) that definitely make the 2021 appealing.

    Hello! Any idea what should be the tire pressures when biking on a hard surface, like city pavement and when going to forest trails? Thanks!

    • @JonLong
      @JonLong  3 года назад +2

      For a firm ride, you could use 10-15 psi. For dirt trails, you could try between 7-10 psi.

    You mention the need for using an Allen wrench for front axle removal. I had been taking my front tire off to transport my Farley 5 as I hadn’t got a rack yet, doing exactly as you said and using an Allen wrench. That was a bit of a pain. I felt sort of foolish when I realized the lever from the rear axle could be pulled out and moved to the front, alleviating the need for the wrench. Just thought I would pass that along.

    • @JonLong
      @JonLong  3 года назад

    • @JonLong
      @JonLong  3 года назад +1

      Depends on what kind of paths. Having the right tire and tire pressure for the application will make a big difference. This hub has more points of engagement than a Hope hub, but is also probably a little quieter. Maybe more similar to an Industry Nine.

      The Gnarwhals on this bike are designed for maximum grip in loose snow and icy conditions. Therefore it has big soft knobbies. You can buy firmer / lighter tires to improve efficiency. Bontrager Barbegazi tires are 0.6 pounds lighter and roll faster than the Gnarwhals. They have less grip but are still good for most situations. Maxxis and 45NRTH also sell faster tires.

    Thanks for the video. Not a fan of the color or the brakes. But it's the only fatbike available in my city. My Level T brakes on my Fuel are OK, but when I test rode this thing the Level brakes were barely adequate, probably the weakest discs I've ever ridden. Will definitely have to upgrade them if I'm going to ride on dirt and pavement, unless maybe a bleed and larger front rotor help out.

    Nice presentation style. Thorough. Trek didn't finish the frame as nicely as they should with respect to the cabling. It looks like an after thought. Maybe they realised they had so many left overs from previous years but didn't want to modify or ditch them for a nice clean frame with full internal cable routing.
    Have you been able to do a ride review?

    • @JonLong
      @JonLong  3 года назад

      I haven’t done a ride review yet, but would like to in the coming months. I’ve been enjoying the bike a lot. The cabling method is always a trade off. Some people like internal routing, others hate it. Trek went with internal routing for derailleurs, but external for brakes. It makes sense since it’s harder to run hydraulic lines internally.

    • @alexmorgan3435
      @alexmorgan3435 3 года назад

      @@JonLong Maybe. A ride review would be good especially in snow or on the trail. I nearly bought a 2nd hand mint Trek Farley EX8 last week, the one with full suspension and aluminium frame, but somehow lost out and I am gutted as I now find out that Trek don't seem to make them anymore plus stores generally don't have a lot of stock of bikes let alone fat bikes at the moment due to CV. Love the paint scheme on your Farley 5. Looks really cool. One thing about Trek bikes is their frames are excellent quality. I have a an older Trek road bike with Ultegra group set, aluminium frame and it has been brilliant, still is. I also have an even older Trek hybrid 20 years old and the frame is still in excellent condition no fading or paint cracking.

      @@alexmorgan3435 I see you're a fellow motorcyclist and mountain biker. I picked up the Farley early in the season because I knew they would be impossible to find once the snow hit. About a month after I bought mine, there were none available in the state (or even neighboring states). I'm really happy with the Farley, and thought it was the best value for what I was looking for in a fat bike. I was using it with Minion FBF/FBR tires when it was warm out, and have switched back to the Gnarwhals (which are now studded) for winter riding. It's a really fun bike, and a pleasure to ride in all conditions.

      @@JonLong It would be great for you to share all this in a video of your Farley. I hope it's not too long before I get a fat bike, possibly a Farley. Yes a motorcyclist as well but if truth be told I prefer cycling. It's the simplicity, keeps you fit and you can go places, away from traffic, that you just can't reach on a motorbike well not unless you have an adventure, trail or dirt bike. Thanks for your replies.

    Overpriced comparing to Northrock XCF from Costco 500$, same drivetrain Deore (but 11-42), front wheel is quick release and not allen key, the only thing to upgrade is the chainring which is 34t, could order 30t from Wolf Tooth for 60$, frame is aluminum by Giant, breaks are mechanical but quit enough for winter driving ( you never speed up, just don't pedal and it stops itself😉)
