I feel like they made a huge mistake making it a flat grind instead of keeping it hollow. Hollow grinds are the kings of slicers and sharpening them will keep them thin behind the edge for quite a bit longer than a flat grind
Hi Jay. I think that though i can't compare it with an elementum, i will stick to my Penguin and maybe get a brass scaled version. For under 50euros i think it is fantastic value. All the best my friend.
If they did the gold/bronze with a non-coated blade, I'd be interested. Coincidentally, the S35VN version plus Flytanium scales would be cheaper. The Flytanium scales delete the lanyard cut-out and I like that. While I like liner locks, I don't like the lock-bar jimping on the Civivi Elementum and the WE avoids that... So I'm not sure which way to go. Is there any issue with blade-swapping the WE frame locks?
The second I heard flat ground, I checked out. Half of what the Elementum does best is push the limits of behind-the-edge geometry for a hollow grind to its effective limit. Which makes it the top cutter it is. But if someone at WeCiviviSencut thinks "this" is an upgrade, they're missing the bloody point...and the edge.
I just Love my Civivi Elementum ...I Like the WE also, but I'm like everyone else, I Love the Hollow grind, and I don't have an Issue with D2 at all.....I recently got the all blacked out Brazen, and it's a Dream too. I honestly wish Civivi would make the Elementum the same size as the Brazen...Just that extra little handle length, makes it my Favorite... Nice Review, and I Love the Brass scale Elementum...I think that will be my next Elementum......Cheers.....
Your Civivi cuts a hell of a lot better than mine. I've owned the D2 Elementum for about a year and love the ergonomics, fit and finish, action, etc. My only gripe is the blade is extremely difficult to sharpen.
@@gui-texzan7477 Could be. Long topic with a lot of variables. I just said something because I haven't had the same issue. I don't mean to question your abilities but I have a suggestion. If you don't do this already, I would try to remove the apex with 4 or 5 passes directly on the stone before you sharpen the edge bevel. Could be fatigued steel at the apex. Good luck.
Ditto on the hollow -vs- flat grind issue. As for the action, seems like a lot of titanium frames tend to be a little sticky. Maybe because Ti can't be mirror polished like most other steels, so there's always some slight texture there to increase friction. I'd prefer to lube those pivot surfaces rather than over-loosen the pivot bolt.
If you’re giving away Elementums I’ll take one. lol I’m in high school and haven’t saved up enough yet. I think a good folder that will last me through college is a wise investment.
Thanks for this review, Jay. I was glad to see the reversible clip, but not happy to see the flat grind. WE has some other new lefty friendly models I'm more interested in trying than this one.
Instead of buying the We elementum, I would go for the Civivi S35vn elementum. 20cv vs S35 and price. Defitnitly s35 at lower price. I think they have "milked" this knife as far as its ever going to go
Not sure the changed hardware justifies me buying ANOTHER Elementum. I don't feel the need to get another when the ones I have do just fine. I'm sure plenty of people will get one, though.
I'd go for the cheaper Civivi branded version. It's a great EDC knife that feels good in your hand. The only downside is that I've found the D2 steel to be extremely difficult to get a fine razor's edge.
@@gui-texzan7477 Thanks for getting back. Enjoy your channel, got the Kubey 322 off your recommendation. Solid, great action, great value for the money. Got for $41 back before Christmas from Amazon.
Thanks Michael! Like Gui-Texzan said, I would go with the Civivi, it's great for everyday use. This one is more of a luxury item that's nice to have, but not at all necessary.
@@MichaelE.Douroux I'm happy to discuss, but want to give due credit to The Knife Beater, who has forgotten more about knives than I'll ever know, and who posts the wonderful content we both love. ✌️
I received mine earlier this month. Really like the look and feel, but a word of caution - the lock bar on this one is pretty unforgiving and honestly hurts the thumb a bit. I’m not sure if this is just mine or a combination of the tough lock bar and texturing they put in there.
Not sure how I'd ever have the chance to find out whether they compare. The original elementum users (like myself) buy cheap awesome knives for a reason. We understand that good cheap knives can be just as functional, elegant and aesthetic as expensive ones. Which Civivi does do better than anyone right now. So why would people with that mindset plunk down a BUNCH more dinero for a "perfected" version of a knife which was already doing an amazing job of filling a particular niche in our EDC stable? I have a ton of different options available to me if I want to personalize my Elementum... Do the three shades of titanium sported by the titanium We versions grant an extra +3 vs. cardboard boxes? Sorry, this feels like a failure by We/Civivi/Sencut to meet their customers where they actually live financially. A brand usually benefits from picking a lane for themselves and sticking to it. But this company seems like it doesn't quite "get" that idea yet. Which would be fine if Civivi knives weren't so amazing and fun to collect and use otherwise. Which really leaves me with nothing to complain about except brand confusion. Which is such an esoteric first world problem that it gives me a sharp stabbing pain right in my unjustified entitlement. 😭
i mean its obviously not for you, nor does it need to be. its for folks that want a premium elementum, not folks who only want the og. thats kinda obvious and really shouldnt need explaining. both exist. like you said you have options lol. this is just another option. sure didnt see anyone screeching when they did a premium s35vn version
I just dont get the whole civivi elementum rage.. I think its just an ok knife. I bought one and barely carry it.. Just not that impressed..so many other knives with better options and build. And by the way, keep up the great vids .. and awsome knives !...Jay, can you check on some really good budget knives under 50 bucks?..kubey is Killin it!
Please, tell us about these knives with better "Options and Build" remotely close to the price of an Elementum. I Believe you are about the First person I've heard with those kind of comments on the Elementum.....Probably the toughest reviewer out there, "Nick Szzz" Loved the Elementum in his teardown and Review....Is it perfect? NO, but there is NOT a knife out there for 50 bucks that is...I've got knives that are 400+ that aren't perfect either.. The Elementum is about as perfect as it gets for under 50 bucks...
When the Elementum first came out, I wasn't the biggest fan. It took some time for me to appreciate what it is. The Elementum is not the first knife I reach for when leaving the house, but I will always have some version of it in my collection. There are not many $50 knives that have remained relevant for so long. But I hear ya, the Elementum just doesn't do it for ya. Thanks Alan!
For the two position clip, frame lock, titanium scales, and 20CV blade. But if that stuff isn't a priority for ya, then I would stick with the Civivi because it's still a great knife at a great price.
Drop shut action certainly doesn't make or break a knife, but it does make things a little more fun. One of my favorites, the Spyderco Domino, doesn't drop shut, but I still love that thing.
I just seems impossible to stop looking for the “perfect” knife once you start the journey.
My journey ended at the CRK sebenza 31 small 😂. Atleast for now...
“ Perfect “ is subjective, not objective so that “ perfect knife “ will vary widely depending on the person .
I feel like they made a huge mistake making it a flat grind instead of keeping it hollow. Hollow grinds are the kings of slicers and sharpening them will keep them thin behind the edge for quite a bit longer than a flat grind
Yeah, I feel the same way.
100%
I agree, although being a light user, I don’t expect it to be a problem especially with 20CV steel.
As some1 w both versions...yes but still lovee my blue ti w satin blade swap

I never pulled the trigger on an Elementum. But, I couldn’t be more happier for getting the WE Kitefin, which I think is very similar
I have enough elementum's for now. If I'm going to buy my first WE it might have to be a Banter.
Yeah, that would be a good buy.
Great video, Jay! Thanks for showing this one off!
I have that in Damascus and carbon fiber with a button lock. Very nice.

Got the blue titanium one and mine was really good outta the box I never owned a og elementum but from this version great little edc knife .
Yours has the blade finish I really wanted. I'm sure mine will break in, just gotta keep working with it.
Your Civivi cuts a hell of a lot better than mine. I've owned the D2 Elementum for about a year and love the ergonomics, fit and finish, action, etc. My only gripe is the blade is extremely difficult to sharpen.
How so? What difficulty are you having? What do you use to sharpen?
I usually use diamond hones, which should do the job. I guess it depends on what you're using to sharpen.
Using medium/fine Arkansas stones. Perhaps I'll switch to something a little more coarse.
I use the Spyderco Tri-hone. So far that sharpens just about anything. D2 - not a problem.

What made the Elementum stand out was its cutting prowess because of the hollow grind. My next WE will be the button lock Malice.
Yeah, that hollow grind was key.
