That post has to be in front of the riser because your handrails have to pass the riser by 1” to be code. So now that you inset that post you need another wall rail on the other side to past the risers.

Very nice work. I think it will inspire my own project. Thanks!

You need to drill right down to the concrete with that first bottom post which give you much more stable post.

I don't know why builders put up these cheap looking stairways. Your railing makeover looks spectacular. It would look nicer without the carpeting, with painted risers and treds.

The reason builders do the cheap staircase is so the homes can be affordable. If you had the house built with the best finishes all the way around you wouldn’t be able to afford the home since there is no end to the amount of upgrades you can have.

How much do you think this job would cost for half wall at 2nd floor? I am interested in getting rid of a half wall to top of stairs. I have full rails at stairs.

jesus man! I wish I could do what you can! Are you currently doing contractor work like this? this is valuable work with all of the construction just making boring drywall. this type of staircase change can make the house seem a ton larger.

Hahaha, 1" drill hole maker!! That's like a thinga majiggy! It's called floating sheet rock or drywall! That'd ok bud, we all had to learn at some point! If you are happy with the end result and you obviously learned something, before you know it you'll be building the Space Shuttle!!
Standard Newell post is usually 36", I believe that's code! Oh and stairs don't have a lot of support in the middle because the upstairs joists and the concrete foundation are support for stairs, stingers equally spread the load over a the span, straight runs don't require much support in the middle because the structural support from the floor joists, concrete slab and supporting walls. Think of floating stairs, they have no visible supports because the wall the are secured to bears all of the load, hence a load bearing wall!
Think of putting stairs inside of a box (which essentially is what builders are doing), the support would come from the box walls and foundation, putting supports along the span of the stairs vice the walls would make them unstable and the supports would succumb to the forces of physics (Von Mises Stress Criterion), start to twist, become wobbly and eventually fail. Whereas the stringers that are properly anchored to the upstairs joists and the downstairs concrete slab, because of the angles of the stingers they spread the forces of the load somewhat equally so they don't require much support for load in the middle, mostly to keep the stairs from twisting and becoming unstable. I know I went far too deep into the science and physics, but I'm a scientist!
Good job, read, read, read... Ask questions and understand the science behind why things are the way they are, and there's not much you can't learn or do!

You’ve never installed a stair have you??? Stairs don’t get joist hangers buddy, all they get is screws or nails from riser to header. You do need a lot of support in the middle if it’s a long stair, if not the whole stair will move even if you have really strong support at top or bottom. Yes doing 1 inch hole in bottom null is kinda sus, but if properly installed it won’t Make a difference. Null code ranges from 34 inches to 36 in residential homes. Don’t try to be mr science guy if you’ve never installed a stair🤨

@@JorgeNunez-ou3kk.... Joist hangers are on the 2nd floor genius, I'm speaking about a 2 story home, hence stairs!
If you believe floor joist have nothing to do with supporting stairs... Please don't do any work at my house, other than stringers, tell me what supports stairs, they just magically float in the air, just curious educate me??
Here's a couple of professional references for you to understand what joist and stairs have in common, I've been building houses, patios, decks or anything else since around 1984,I think I understand joists and stringers in regards to stairs support, but perhaps it may help

Amazing job! But it would be easier if you drilled 1/2 inch holes and ran screws to attach rail to wall and null, You’ve already drilled a whole inch hole anyways hahah but looks Awesome!!

Does code require a handrail on both sides all the way up? I noticed you don’t have railing on the left side at the top of the staircase.

    • @chamferreyes6747

His stair is out of code. Well at least in California. The rails have to be continuously go past top and bottom risers by at least an 1” His landing post is behind the riser so therefore that rail ends way before the last riser which causes people to fall because of the rail stopping short of the bottom riser.

    • @goombabear

In North Carolina there only needs to have one railing and I had ten foot ceilings. The other side had picture frame molding, so there was no room for an additional railing. I never felt unsafe using those stairs, although there were two landings because of the height of the stairs.
