I took a lesson from Brian Manzella in 2006 when he was out here in SoCal touring and Lee Dietrick hosted/helped him. It was quite a bit of fun, and one thing I remember is if a change/feel he recommended didn't work in the first two or three swings he went on to something else and he had a bagful of "something else". He was a master at describing feels like "throw a drunk off your shoulder". Looking forward to seeing more on this series as I know he can be a bit of a contrarian but I'm guessing there will be a few gems. Already interested in learning more about the force across the shaft (handle dragging?) vs torque on the shaft due to Jacobs/Nesbit 3D golf analysis.

Wow, this definitely brought back some memories for me. I took a series of half day lessons from Manzella some years ago and while he’s interesting to listen to, didn’t help my game much.
A LOT of talking but just all over the map with regard to specific instruction. At the end of each session my head was spinning.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s entertaining and a funny guy, but tough for me to follow his advice.

1st, I appreciate you took the time to respond - thank you very much. 2nd, I noticed I'm not the only person expressing frustration that it's difficult to follow your instruction.t It seems like you put too much emphasis on "telling" and your approach is to argue "who's right and who's wrong" and you're not interested enough in listening to your audience? You were kind enough to take the time and ask me what would I like clarified - but, I'm so confused I don't even know where to start. You are extremely knowledgable about the golf swing - but I'm suggesting the real opportunities to improve as an instructor is to study how people learn. If you're serious about improving your instruction techniques I would recommend a book, "Telling Ain't Training". Thank you for listening to me and I hope my perspective peaks your interest.

Manzella and Jacobs are awesome! Most people don't know it was Brian M. who started the move to finding out the science of the golf swing, from his old golf forum. He got the ball rolling( pun intended) He was the initiator and the first or one of the first instructors to introduce, use and promote Trackman.
Brian deserves a lot of kudos for what he's done to help better the game and he gave instructors something to put in their tool box to help golfers get better, thanks Brian!

The gist of what Brian is trying to convey is maximum lag and FSL is super detrimental to the average golfer. Unless you can swing a 7i 90mph+, you’ll struggle to get the ball in the air and hold greens. And even if you are that fast, you still might not want to fully maximize those two things for a variety of reasons. Basically the GG/EGS modern swing teachings really only apply to a very small segment of the golfing population, everyone else would do better with more traditional teachings from the past to get the ball in the air, hit it straight, and hold greens. That’s what I got out of it at least. Makes a lot of sense to me. Guys like Manzella, the AMG guys, Malaska, and Monte seem to understand these things the best.

For the first time watching one of your videos I'm at a complete loss as to what the point was? Manzella is supposed to be a great teacher, I'm not saying he isn't but I didn't hear any great points, and you typically help decipher what these guys are saying, I don't mean to be critical because I realize you put tons of effort into your videos, maybe this one is simply a mulligan.

Its pretty simple. Most social media teachers are teaching what they see pros do at impact , which is a buncg of lag, but dont understand that those pros have higher clubheadspeeds, so the pros need to reduce height. Most amateurs need to learn how to release the club i stead of trying to get lag from some kind of hold or body swing. Releasing the club on the arc and having an impact position with less lag/hold release will get the ball in the air and make the swing easier.

I think the biggest issue that is not addressed in the video is the fact that people confuse drill work with golf swing. There are teachers who will have you “hold” lag or leverage to strengthen your pivot motion. It’s not an absolute but just a means to an end. As your pivot develops then you can learn to release the club properly. Many people see clips, shorts, reels, etc from an hour lesson and think that’s all it’s about.

at 6:30 seconds i'm really confused because he says two different things on how he achieved the low one vs the high one... What the heck did he mean to say? is the low shot a handle push? I know my torqueing force on the club head launches the ball super high and gets me 0% shaft lean

    • @brianmanzellagolf

Even Mr Manzella has admitted that

Golf instruction has definitely turned into "swing gurus" promoting weird positions and moves. A couple of other fads that need to die out is the whole don't pull on the handle because it "steepens" your swing and the whole light grip pressure fad with the old saying hold the grip like if you were holding a baby bird. Pulling the handle does steepen if your also open your chest early, it actually shallows if you let some of the right arm angle out, it also allows you to generate speed and height. Super light grip pressure doesn't hold up under pressure and it leads to sloppy face control. I remember Rory McIlroy stating that he has a firm grip on the club like a 7 out of 10, and Hogan famously said of the Sam Snead quote: “what Sam Snead didn’t tell you is that the baby bird is a hawk.”

Lag can't be taught. Lag is a natural reaction to the proper focus. The opposite of lag is early extension. If the ball is your target you will have early extension every time. There is no training aid to fix your focus. But if you want to get the proper feel of releasing at the target instead of at the ball I would tell you to try the LAG SHOT.

So is it fair to say that Brian disagrees with Milo and the squat move?

Yes, but I'd go further. Like all would be gurus he disagrees with everybody else about everything. And if you want clarification of his thoughts he will disagree with himself. But let's hold judgement until Brendon hits a few balls and he makes suggestions about how to be better.

I mean I tried to go down the whole GG and Milo swing model and I was shanking balls and just got too dumped under. I went with Monte and Dan C and I'm back on track. I'm sure their swing models work well and GG has proof with multiple tour winners but it's too tough for the average golfer without constant instruction and feedback.

Does seem like Malaska, Monte, Steve Pratt have that common theme of throwing from the top in transition to get the sequence of things set up correctly going into impact. I feel personally the easy way to consistently take that concept through is to make sure that throw of the arms/wrists/hands does not continue through in isolation of the hips/torso rotation. I love that feeling of the strong uncocking and throwing the clubhead down from the top of the backswing …. But once the hands drop to trail hip height -- the hands and trail hip have to marry up and swing through together. If the hands just throw through way ahead of the trail hip, all kinds of inconsistencies in club face and strike for me. And if the hands hang back and trail behind the trail hip, then it’s either a block straight right or some last second flip hook. But I think Manzella is making sense from what I personally like and what resonates for me. We are ulnar deviating and throwing that clubhead hard from top of backswing in transition …. And I will curious to see if he discusses how best to make sure that throw is then done in conjunction with a married up trail hip and hands working in line with each other through impact

Michael has never claimed to invent the idea. He did invent the idea of using it to help illustrate the golfer's 3D inputs into the club.

Great content by Brian Manzella as always, but BBG please dear God stop interrupting your guests constantly. The person being interviewed cannot stay on a topic long enough to bring home a point without being cut off and diverted by a question on an unrelated topic.
