  • Scoliosis correction surgery using fusion of the spine is one of the more common spine surgeries in adolescents. This is indicated when the scoliosis curve progresses past 45 degrees.
    Even though this surgery is a very large fusion, many orthopedic surgeons don't refer for physical therapy after this surgery. There are many reasons this might be, but one of the biggest is they don't think it is needed.
    The problem with this is that I see patients in my clinic all the time after fusion surgery that are having other issues related to the changes from the surgery. It isn't that the surgery was bad or not indicated, it is just that the body is not used to the new orientation.
    If you have had scoliosis correction surgery, please make sure your doctor has cleared you before doing these exercises. Also, these are best done under the supervision of a Physical Therapist trained in scoliosis treatment.

    I had my surgery 5 years ago at the age of 15 and it was a huge success , it lasted 10 hours . I just wanna say to scoliosis patients don’t be ashamed of your body before or even after the surgery and believe the surgery helps a lot it’s a little challenging to keep a flexible body after it but with everyday exercise you can do it 😊.

    I'm dealing with the same problems as anot4her commenter: 5 years since surgery at 21 y/o and lately the pain in my lower back and especially shoulders has increased greatly. Sitting at my desk too much and unaffordable gym subscriptions are probably the biggest culprits. Having a set of exercises I can do in a few minutes is very helpful and just using the muscles is already making the pain subside a little in the short term. I am curious to see what it will do in the long run. Thank you Align Therapy and most of all thank you Emerson!

      Usually after fusion surgery I wouldn't add rotational components until they had been out a year. It is more stressful on the spine.

    • @AlignTherapyUtah

      The muscles can get stiff because of the lack of mobility where the fusion is. I would work with someone who sees this in your area.

    My daughter had a c-curve (40 degrees to the right) and was operated a couple of years ago at 13 years of age. She had a VBT surgery which enables her to do everything like bending, twisting and even sports just like normal children and Emmerson has been her inspiration ever since she saw this video. But there are a few remnants of that curve which are very minor. Is there still a way to fix that? We are from India.

    • @AlignTherapyUtah
      @AlignTherapyUtah  2 месяца назад

      For a curve that isn't fused that is above and below the fusion, I would do Schroth. If it is within the fusion, it is set.

      Not a specific bad outcome. The levels above the fusion can wear out faster. To prevent that, keep your back strong!

    • @AlignTherapyUtah
      @AlignTherapyUtah  3 месяца назад

      Because the fused area doesn't move, there is more stress above and below it. This makes the joints and discs have more wear and stress and they tend to have more degeneration later in life. It happens with all fusions.

    Surgery should be the LAST option. Bodywork, especially for the tight erector spinae, and whichever quadratus lumborum is too tight do wonders to relieve scoliosis.

    • @AlignTherapyUtah
      @AlignTherapyUtah  Год назад +1

      Sometimes it is necessary with curves that are progressive. Manual therapy can help but PSSE is really the only thing in the research, along with bracing, that helps stop progression.
