I definitely agree with commenter that wrote about adding ventilation holes - drilling several large bore holes with a drill ( one at least large enough for one's finger to go through and lift the pillow up to allow air in ) at the edges of the pillow support is much easier than adding a childproof lock. Alternatively you can make larger spacing where the pillow support is meeting the shelves. Also, allowing air circulation helps with keeping away mold and bad smells. Better safe than sorry, for her sake and any kid that will be visiting. Nobody expected the tragedy when it struck them, we've had several suffocations just this year including two in store-sold furniture - my colleague is a safety guideline supervisor and if not for him I'd never believe the ingenuity of kids.
On a less important note, ventilation holes also allow you to store /books/ in there since humidity and air will flow through and not get mold in there. Just a good idea all around
Oh my goodness I remember this being a huge issue with the Lane chests. I thought for sure people would’ve corrected that by now. Thank you for shining a light on this issue such a sad thing to happen that is so easily available with proper safety measurements.
I once locked my sister in a trunk and then panicked for some reason and couldn’t get the key. Thank god she had enough air but she’s claustrophobic now 😅
This is adorable! I would just add aome ventilation to the trunk somehow. Children have died getting trapped in trunks like that and that lid looks like it would be too heavy for a child to lift. My kid is 2 & he would LOVE climbing into that thing non stop. It all looks so beautiful though!
Or if the trunk is divided into smaller compartments with dividers making it physically impossible for anyone of any size to go inside, that would be better
This is going to be beautiful! Definitely add a lock and air holes both to the trunk, as well as secure the shelves to make it safe. Reading to your baby from infancy will really help her brain development. She will love her reading nook!

It's like her own private space that she can get away to when she's stressed and pull up her favorite book! I could also see it as a study room. The functionality that will travel with the kid for years!
Those book shelves need more than just a couple Brad nails from the nail gun if they are going to hold books. I don't care, except you should make them safe so they don't fall under the weight
Yeah, books are super heavy. Even if the shelves don’t collapse outright, they can warp quite a bit without adequate support. One of my old bookshelves started sagging, and eventually cracked right in the middle of a shelf, despite being at least 1inch thick solid wood. The ends of the shelves had decent support, but the there wasn’t anything supporting the middle.

So cute❤ maybe add a cross bar so lots of kids can climb on it and it won’t cave in in the middle. I like the air hole idea or add a lock so you can lock it when you aren’t around. Cutting down a memory foam mattress makes a really lovely cushion or using a crib mattress if it’s the correct size. Great job👊🏻
I love this so much! The green will make it seem like a little secret garden! I would recommend adding some sort of extra support to the shelves. As kids get older books are gonna get heavier!

Hi that's gorgeous! And something your child will be forever grateful for (I know, because my parents did something similar). I see a lot of people have been having the same thought about ventilation incase Little One goes exploring. Another little tidbit that could be fun is putting a secret compartment - it took about 6 years for me to find the one he did (and that was with the help of a cousin)!
