Something important is when you're doing frequency sweeps on your EQ boost it only around +10db, you're boosting it to over 20 so any frequency is gonna sound obnoxious, at that point you might remove something you don't want to remove.
Yes u want to use minimal boosts and cuts, u will be surprised sometimes the right -2db cut in the right frequency will significantly improve your sound.
That's a byproduct of training your ears as well. A lot of times people boost so hard because a 2 or 3 db difference is waaay to subtle for them to pick up on.
@@t.r.e4482 I found my self doing this. I would cut it too much and then not be satisfied. And then through experience, and everyone I knew saying "use ur ears" and not giving me any useful advice, I finally just sat down and really listened. I still have some ways to go to properly identify the frequency, but overall using my ears is most important.
Tip for recording genres like trap and pop: make. sure. you. deboxy. If your vocals aren't sitting right in a mix its most likely due to that boxy frequency taking up too much space. I personally like to use MannyM Tripple D, amazing plugin for that whole process. If they're still not sitting right though a universal fix could be to mess with your stereo image. Making your instrumental slightly mono and increasing the vocal"s stereo space can help wonders when its sounding like you vocals are "behind" the instrumental.

Tip: if you want a more visual stock plugin for compression, instead of fruity compressor you can use fruity limiter and then change it to compress mode and the visual interface is kinda similar to fabfilter’s.
Great video! I would recommend not being so scared of the low end. It's good to get rid of the low-mid boxxy sounds yes but a bit of low end below the boxy frequencies will give it a lot of body and presence so it doesn't sound so much like a radio voice. That low end to a vocal is just as important as the high frequencies. Also, with rap vocals it is very important to to emphasize the transients. Having clean transients can turn your vocals into weapons and can help it stand out of the mix without the need of a side-chaining. Also dipping a bit of the instrumental out where the vocals are, properly compressing the vocals and eqing them to the song will also eliminate the need for side-chaining which can in turn cause problems when sent to the mastering phase when it is further compressed. Oh one last thing! Sweeping for bad frequencies can be a bad habit and can take out the life of a vocal performance. I know lots of RUclips producers say to do so but it's more so situational than standard. What you are doing when you are sweeping is making yourself AWARE of frequencies rather than them being an actual problem. You will hear that frequency if you point it out to yourself because you are training your ears in the moment to notice them. A better approach would be to understand how vocals work and eliminate frequencies that resonate. That's when you need to do a needle cut like that. If a frequency isn't resonating uncontrollably then it is more so a vocal timbre than a problem. The more tight dips you do the more wooshy your vocals could sound when your voice passes over those frequency dips. If you are just starting out and can't point those resonating sounds out right away, try getting an Audio Spectrum Analyzer like Voxenga's Span plug-in which has a free version. With the default setting on that analyzer it will actually show peaks wherever a resonating signal is happening. It's not good practice to always use visual analyzers but if you are starting out, it's good to see it so you can learn what it sounds like so you can point it out in the future with your ears. Once your ears are trained you can keep using the visual analyzer with your ears to quickly find problems and analyze them to see if they need to be addressed. Still lots of great techniques in here! Especially with the room set up. It all starts with the recording. Sometimes mixing just entails stylizing the vocals rather than actually mixing when it is recorded properly. It's also important to take time and learn what everything does on FX and plugins you'll use. something to consider is that it's not always good the take out the breath sounds, it can make it sound less natural. the breaths don't stand out too much once the instrumental is going and it can help people feel more connected to the artist. if you listen to a lot of mainstream music the breath sounds are just left in. IMO the better option is improving your breath control so the breath sounds are clean and don't sound funky like you're super out of shape or something
if you listen to pretty much any mainstream rap you'll notice they keep the breath sounds, it seems like they cut out some of the ones that don't sound natural though
That track is straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥 man! Just started learning how to use FL Studio and make some music. I'm glad I ran into your channel, so far all your videos I've seen are very informational and inspiring! 👍
After you get all the Plugins you want just make a patcher So you have a default vocal chain to use everytime. I wouldnt use the exact reverb and distortion each time. Thats why I route them to send tracks. I call it the Vocal booth Template

I like to use Fruity Limiter as my compressor. There’s a setting to switch from LIM to COMP and it’s got a great visual similar to fab filter :)
Good one as well
Why are there 10000 Beat Makings vor Travis Scott, Lil Uzi, Nle etc but almost none for Asap Rocky??
Mabe you can change that Simon ?😮☺️
I like him
Cause of artist relevancy, the artists getting the most attention draw more views etc so a lot of producers make type beats for those artists to draw attention to themselves
No one is talking about how fire is this song man it's so perfect
I’d like to let everyone here know this is not actually a good tutorial. The vocals sound thin and relaxed. I would definitely find a better tutorial for this.
👍
Servida Music I’m not sure what 👍 means but i’ll go ahead and say you agree with me
Servida i love your videos man u keepin me alive during quarantine❤
Haha don't die
That beat goes so well with the theme of the lyrics.
HE DOESNT MISS
Before i play the video, this is actually something i got really good at after working with artists directly for years. there's very little else i could possibly learn, unless it's a different variation of something i already do. but since it's you, i expect to be proven wrong. let's see how this goes. I'll reply to this comment when the video's over.
nice. nothing new,, but it's a clean mix.
Needed this tutorial🔥🙏🏾 Thanks man
this is the best mixing guide i’ve seen on youtube i’m waiting for my gear yo come in I can wait
You are so talented Simon! I have learned alot from you the last couple of months so I kinda feel bad that I can’t support you more financially. I will make a playlist with your music and put that heat on repeat because that I can do 🔥 thanks again Simon 🤝
this is super hard bro!! I love watching your videos and I keep learning so much :) keep being you - big ups from Cologne, Germany
Prof. Simon back at it again! 😂 Great tutorial vid!
90%: Have confidence.
95%: Sing good.
100%: Let Simon mix it.
really is the ultimate guide I truly appreciate helping understand the switches in the compressor.
Nah fam there is so much wrong with this video
@@wrldday7791 nah man, a lot of info in there helped me out. u cant watch a video to copy every step, u take lil notes from many videos. and a lot of notes i got were from this video. i watch many videos, u got one?
Saucy Chico nah I don’t,but you never put reverb on the actual vocal track or course or saturation you make a buss that’s what he’s doing wrong because vocals are supposed to stay MONO not stereo.
@@wrldday7791 nahh see, i learned that from wavy waynes video. which he didnt really say it but it was a step he was doing. and yeah bruh u should make some videos, teaching some of it. id definitely watch em. im doing everything on my own(except beats) videos, writing, recording, trynna master lol but i just recently started like 3 weeksago

thank you man this helped so much, this turned one of the songs i hated into a literal masterpiece god bless ‼️
finally!! after 200 years of asking for this!
something to consider is that it's not always good the take out the breath sounds, it can make it sound less natural. the breaths don't stand out too much once the instrumental is going and it can help people feel more connected to the artist. if you listen to a lot of mainstream music the breath sounds are just left in. IMO the better option is improving your breath control so the breath sounds are clean and don't sound funky like you're super out of shape or something
if you listen to pretty much any mainstream rap you'll notice they keep the breath sounds, it seems like they cut out some of the ones that don't sound natural though
Yyyeeesssss... the video I was waiting for this :)
I bought fabfilter plugins and soundtoys too because of this I'm hype to try them out today after work
Yess this is the video I've been waiting for @servida. Thank you!
I listened to Villian on Spotify yesterday and now here. It's dope.
Probably one of your best videos in my opinion. Nice job
Ayyy thank you
That track is straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥 man! Just started learning how to use FL Studio and make some music. I'm glad I ran into your channel, so far all your videos I've seen are very informational and inspiring! 👍
You have no clue how useful this was.. and coincidental bc I have been struggling for so long and wanted to learn 🥺❤️
After you get all the Plugins you want just make a patcher So you have a default vocal chain to use everytime. I wouldnt use the exact reverb and distortion each time. Thats why I route them to send tracks. I call it the Vocal booth Template
For a good visual compressor you can switch the fruity limiter to compression mode and I personally like that
Ooooo yes
This is a great updated guide from your other video. Thank you, Simon!
This is the best tutorial on vocal mixing I’ve found so far thanks bro
1:04 it seems like without panels it is cleaner ^^ (no white noise in the background)
My dude got me to understand vocal mixing in 9 mins lol. BTW: anyone reading this comment, I have the fab filter plugins if you want them! Thanks from an internet stranger :)
