This is a very intelligent movie. I mean, the ending can be interpreted in many ways: what did she say to the old lady? And what the old lady did in the end,did she do it to get ""there"" faster because the truth sort of liberated her or did she do it because she could not continue living with the horrible truth? Very interesting. What is the meaning of suffering? Does it lead to any conclusion? Is it pointless ?
I recall reading a very clever observation that the fact we debate what she said more than anything else, makes us not much different than the cult. The thing that should be at the front of our minds is the relentless torture and degradation of a captive human being for a extremely spurious aim.
I know exactly how Gary feels. I remember watching it at Horrorthon in the Irish Film Institute when it was first released. I was haunted by it and I remember how quiet and ashen faced everyone was. Thankfully the organisers played Night of the Creeps directly afterwards - perfect antidote
I remember watching Martyrs twice upon it's release. It's stuck with me for a long time. It was very impressive, yet devastating. Unlike many other so called torture porn and shocker flicks from that period, it's really good film in general. Since many years I intended to do the rewatch, but older I got, more real life stresses I faced, and less desire I had for experience like Martyrs. Few months ago I went through a break up after being in a relationship for almost 16 years. I thougt it's a good moment for revisiting Martyrs, I feel like sh*t anyway. It still holds up very well. Knowing all the plot twists it's not as engaing as it was before though. Also there are some very 00s exthetics to it, that I am not a fan of. But it's a very good movie regardless. Cheers guys
This director did another film called ""Ghostland"" in which he sort of revisited the same subject matter,he tried to show us the mind of a tortured person.A very disturbing film as well.
While this movie has gruesome violence and visuals, the director did a good job building a good reason and concept behind it, indeed many things are up to your imagination and interpretation, and the things you don't know or are unexplained is what makes the movie more frightening
Possibly the most harrowing film I've seen. My gf at the time put it on to watch when we had friends over and it was the two males that broke down in tears and implored her to turn it off. 😱
@2:00 Good films are not to watch while eating pizza and laugh with friends, rather those that you watch once and scarring you for life, that you don't even need to rewatch, since every scene is burned in your mind forever ;)
French FML Triple feature night: High Tension, Frontier(s), and Martyrs. I was watching all these movies as they came out during and after my highschool years, probably not healthy viewing habits.
Martyrs is a well made & good movie. Obviously quite polarizing, intense & extreme, still it's well acted with very good practical SFX. In some ways it has a John Carpenter style ambiguous ending. It is not for all movie goers to watch, but horror fans will appreciate the effort put in to the making of this experience. One of the better " torture porn" of the late 2000s.
The guy who created the extraordinary makup and prosthetics is Benoît Lestang - a genius. Apparently the shooting was a nightmare. Benoît Lestang was working non stop,18 hours a day. Benoît Lestang committed suicide in April 2008, a few months after the end of production. His suicide is most likely unrelated to Martyrs, but it could have been a contributing factor (watching Martyrs is already depressing, it must have been traumatising to work on it for weeks...).
Wow... I stopped watching the review at about 18 minutes because I've never heard of it and my interest was piqued enough that I didn't want anymore real spoilers. Skipped ahead to the recommendation portion and I'm still interested but thoroughly convinced I should wait because I know I'm probably* not in a healthy enough mental state at the moment, lol!
Why, thank you for reviving my nightmarish memories that I so carefully buried with hard work. I've been recommending this film to people for years while making it clear that I will NEVER in my life watch it again.
My biggest plot hole for this movie besides the obvious one of the girl staying in the house after seeing it's a torture dungeon... I'm in really why would you even stay in the house after you seen your friend killed everyone? But anyway... The biggest plot hole is these people think that afterlife is real but are still willing to torture people to death?!?! So the at least like pretty dang confident that the concept of heaven and hell are real. Confident enough to spend millions of dollars in years and years and years to achieve this goal. But they're not confident enough to be afraid of going to hell for torturing people to death?!
First point is legitimate. Second, many people in belief regarding God breaks His precepts and commandments everyday. Despite believing in Heaven and Hell. What make you think individuals in this organisation are even sane, clearly offshoot Christian group.
I wouldn't consider Martyrs torture porn. (Nor any of the New French Extremity films.) They're intellectual or philosophical horror -- extremity in service of an important idea. I like your idea of a Lovecraftian revelation behind this one, guys!
Its been a few years since i rewatched and I feel like the son gave some slight impression that he did. I could be thinking of anothrr movie but i feel like they did.
Oh boy this is the review Gary was “looking forward to”…….. I have never watched this film before but when Gary mentioned it was coming up I did an Iain and wiki’ed it and thought “Yyyeeeaaahhhhh imma skip it”. And this is one film I’m not going to purchase after the review. Anyway Amazing review guys 👊👊👊👊👊👊
I've only ever seen this once, yet it's one of those sort of movies that once watched it's never ever forgotten, even for die hard horror fanatics like myself it's a gruelling experience to sit through. I've never seen the remake, but I've heard it's watered down trash.
I dont get how people say that its open to interpretation. Seems rather open n shut. Girl gives lady answer. Lady either didnt like the answer finding everything she did meaningless. She says "keep doubting" so clearly its nothing good.
@@OffTheShelfReviews I've seen this movie too...and I also don't want to watch it again. If I did, just watching this review would be enough imagery to remind me that I really didn't.
This is definitely the most horrific and dam right horrible movie experience I’ve ever had and will definitely never watch again. If there are people out there that like this sort of stuff then they’re extremely disturbed. I can only imagine how screwed up the people who made this are.
This is my nomination for the quintessential video nasty. But it's better than that since many of those films were very poorly made. This film would have been traded around on VHS back in the day.
I went into this movie totally blind long ago and it stuck with me. Id say it belongs on my top 100 horror movies to see list. How did the same dude that made this make The Tall Man? It sucked. Maybe he wouldnt have been the guy for hellraiser or at least you'd want to check out that he is right depressed before making a Hellraiser.
I had no idea a remake was done, read its synopsis...it's definitely nowhere close to the original. Granted the makers of the 2015 one admitted they didn't want to go as far as the original did, but then you have to wonder what was the point?
Always been too scared to watch martyrs I once watched the original I spit on your grave thinking it was a slasher type movie and it emotionally drained me so this movie would probably end me
This film is a masterpiece. In fact, it was the first DVD I have purchased in a few decades. Amazing! Always a treat when you guys upload, much love from York x ETA: I believe that Anna told Mademoiselle that there was nothing, so when she tells Etienne to keep doubting and doing herself in, she knows that all the faith she had in Martyrs somehow having an insight into what comes after death was all for nought, and she tortured all those girls for no reason. So she takes off all her finery (finery that she will not need as there is no afterlife, so it's pointless wearing it), and puts the gun in her mouth.
I love horror films. I love being scared by good horror films. This film was well made and acted but it is not a film I will ever watch again and I never recommend it to friends if asked about it. I pretty much hated it. Guess that is what the director wanted.
That's the issue i have with this movie, the ending. Did she tell her something so horrible that she decided to end herserlf? if so, wouldn't you want to be alive as long as possible instead? If she told her something so beautiful, it would be a bit more logical to go on and end yourself to be in that place faster, but then if it was something beautiful why would she be so selfish to take the secret from her loyal cult? It's a contradiction beacuse even if it was something beautiful, the expressions of the cult leader were more inclined to fear than joy or excitement. It's a contradiction because if she told her the afterlife was something horrible, then you wouldn't speed your own death. That's the reason i avoid this movie because it's awesome, but the pay off is a slap on my face telling me that all my time and emotions invested on these characters and story were useless.
@3:15 Nooooo!!!! Why did the director got over his depression, and humanity lost its opportunity to experience a potentially third decent Clive Barker adaptation on screen :(
You realise he only didn't do a Hellraisee film because the people looking for a director wanted a teen horror movie style Hellraisee film and he refused? It had nothing to do with his depression
