Gave up on that garbage after three episodes....surprised I even lasted that long. One of ( if not the worst ) adaptations of a video game ever put out.
I'm so fucking hyped for this review, I'm staying up for this one. Literally switching from your guys Hellraiser 2 review to watch this. We're all very glad to see these Halloween reviews coming up, can't wait to see everything you guys publish this month
As shouty as Chief Irons is in this movie, "What the f*ck are you doing here Leon!?" is basically what I was thinking throughout the entirety of the movie. 😆
An early Off the Shelf Reviews!? AWESOME! I agree with Iain, so far, sadly this is the best adaptation of Resident Evil. We have all the characters from 1 & 2 (except for Berry and Rebecca for some reason), memorable locations...for the most part, and... zombies. But that's not saying much. I will say I am happy to see the director is a fan of the games. He really shows it with all the references and Easter eggs. At least they didn't hire some random A-hole whose never heard of or played Resident Evil before. At least they got someone who is a fan to direct this. But AGAIN, that's not saying much. It seems the director was too focused on making too many references and Easter eggs to the games, rather telling a compelling story. Mashing in Resident Evil 1 & 2's story lines together was a terrible idea. Each game has their own story to tell and can make a simple film all on their own without the sequels jumbled up. Not to mention, mashing in too many characters together from both games, each doesn't give the film enough time to development each and every one of them. I won't repeat everything Gary and Iain said, but you guys get the idea. Over all, sadly, this is the best adaptation of Resident Evil we have so far. By comparison, FAR BETTER than the Netflix show. Seriously lmao I have no idea what the hell that was! The show might have the "Resident Evil" name, but it's NOT Resident Evil. Again, by comparison, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is a masterpiece! Take that as you will.
This film was horribly miscast. The actor playing Wesker, would've made more sense as Barry Burton. The actor playing Birkin should've played the proper Wesker and the actor playing Chris should've been Leon. The actor playing Leon just shouldn't have been in it at all. The actress playing Claire was ok, same with Jill. I like the actor who plays Irons, but Irons was just bad as a character in this, if the director had put some easter egg about Irons being basically a serial killer in the film it would've made him more palpable, but he wound up being the generic dumb character who gets killed in a stupid way that means nothing overall.
There are many John Carpenter references. Yes, the aspect and font; but also the direction, scroll at the beginning of the movie, timestamps, dreary atmosphere, cheesy dialogue, siege story, abrupt ending. Speaking of abrupt ending, there is about 45 minutes cut from the theatrical release and I hope to one day soon get the full cut of the film. Yes, those two scenes with hit songs overpowering the scene really mess up the flow and lessens the tension. The poor CGI really turns the scenes into comedy. The last moments of the movie were cut to being almost incomprehensible. There is no reason for the mother to write "itchy tasty" on the door. Wesker's English accent comes out too often. All of this, it still is a great campy movie. Leon has a character arc. He starts off as an inept officer who was forced into the job by his father and grows into a badass action hero with a rocket launcher. Unfortunately, a lot of it was cut for theatrical release.
Enrico was on Bravo team with Dooley which were the two officers in the diner. Enrico was the guy who Chris and Richard found being eaten in the mansion. The other cop that turned and attacked Chris in the dining hall was Dooley.
Not going to lie but I've been waiting for this review and I'm excited! Been a fan for nearly 5 years. Grear reviews and I appreciate your opinions on your favorite movies, especially horror. Saying hello from Los Angeles. Also I hope you do the franchise for Saw.
Having Claire without Sherry and Leon without Ada really just saps their stories or anything. RE isn’t really known for massive characterization but the characterization they DO have really hinges on their interactions with their prospective partner characters.
I know what the film makers were trying to do with this movie but, it falls flat miserably. They completely ruined the timeline of events spectacularly. If the Mansion scenes had come first in the movie it may have faired slightly better, but it's a total mess to be honest. Leon is a sniveling incompetent clutz (the exact opposite of the games) and the rest of the cast are phoneing the script in. It's better by half with the fan service, shame it's only the bad half they managed to film. I watched this only once, i don't intend to watch it again, and if i want my Resident Evil fix i'll stick with the games. Ian's howling Leon impersonation had me buckled with laughter. Great review guys.
preach, too many people being too forgiving because they're tired of the prior. They can both be shit sh ws and deserving on little praise a lot of criticism. No one is getting live version movie or tv right with this, and even the games are just remaking remaking themselves but are at least elevating their game play / visuals. Tv and movies are just going downhill even if different hills
After suffering through whatever that Netflix show was I have much more appreciation for what they were trying to do with this movie. If only they had it split into two parts like a Kill Bill I think it would have been one of the best adaptations.
This movies take on Leon is atrocious, that alone makes it nowhere near the "best". Jill despite looking nothing like the character (similar issue with Leon) at least gets her character somewhat close. Being a rookie doesn't mean you are automatically the incompetent comedy relief archetype. Even the Anderson movies had the good sense to give that to the taxi driver with the golden deagles..
This really could have been great if they hadn't tried to put the story of 2 games into 1 movie, make a slow burn horror, Alien style for the first game, then a more action horror film for the second game, like Aliens, might have worked..still it beats the crap out of the Netflix show, RE has had it so bad, can we just get 1 really good live action adaption? Why can no one ever get it right!? 🤣😭 Oh also Leon was done dirty and alot of the zombies looked TERRIBLE! If the zombies in your Zombie game franchise movie look bad, you've automatically failed.

"B-but, we had someone say Jill Sandwich. Clap, clap you fucking nerds!" said some executive. Load of old bollocks. It's time to accept that the moment for a good Resident Evil adaptation is long gone.
That trailer song of What's Up by 4 Non Blondes is an interesting choice. Because lyrically, according to the bassist of the band, it has no meaning. So really when you think about it, it has a lot in common with the movie.
The look on Gary’s face when you guys discussed the part where the zombie gets mauled down by a truck then WALKS off 😂 literally had me crying of laughter
Damn. This is a terrible film. I think it's more annoying when its presented as a love letter to the series and its fans where so much misses the mark. The presentation of Wesker has put me off completely. Thanks for the amazing review, guys. Capcom said the films are great for the franchise brand, imagine the results if the outside media was actually good. Surely one day they can make one solid film?! I still think the first RE film is the best of them. 😛 And Ian, don't buy anymore RE DVDs. 😂
Great review like always guys! I was really looking forward to this film as well when it was first announced. Played all of the Resident Evil games dozens of times over and never got sick of them. The 2002 Resident Evil movie had its good moments. Loved the laser grid security hallway scene! Sadly this film was just a lazy way to mix RE1,RE2, code veronica, and RE1 remake into a rushed sequence of events. Watched it once it did my best to completely erase it from my memory.
