I don't understand why none of these movies ever want to tell a straightforward scary story in the mansion? Like, the first game is the scariest one: why not make an *actual* horror movie based on the horror franchise? It's always the kitchen sink with these movies. Keep it simple. Stick to the source material. Capture the scares!
@@JakeBaldino and it's one big escape game to begin with. I don't know why the puzzles are never featured in RE movies, while we get loads of sub-par escape room movies? (Full disclosure, I did like WtRC, but I too feel the mansion should have been the centerpiece of the film.)
@@rhysguillerme2893 I guess people don't include puzzles in the mansion (or movies in general) because it will probably slow down the movie. It's hard to translate a puzzle in a movie with the stakes of a situation. Sure once or twice it can be done but it has to be fresh each time you do it, which is exhausting from a writer's perspective. Also from the audience perspective they might raise the question of "why they heck does a guy have so many puzzles in his house?" Which the writer has to yet again explain in a clever way. Maybe it can be done; certain movies thrive on that such as SAW and Escape Room. However some people aren't interested in that stuff and prefer just zombies and action. In the end, it's all about balance, dialogue and costumes. All of which are very difficult.
Funny enough I've been trying to pitch my RE movie for years. It's just the mansion and super gritty scary. A true survival horror story. Ughhh I'm so upset I don't have the connections to get it in front of anyone in Hollywood.
Agreed with a lot of what you said, but I couldn't stand Leon. If he was anyone but Leon, the character would have just been okay. Him being Leon though was just pissing me off lol
@@JakeBaldino I went to a screening last night and Robbie Amell was there and kept preaching the same thing which was so confusing to me. He also said they tried their best to get Chris to punch a boulder somehow and I'm so sad they didn't find a way to shoehorn that in there :(
Ever since I saw the casting, I said to myself he looked way too much like Carlos lol for a second I thought he actually was carlos but then they said he was Leon
I agree with everything you said. I've been a fan since the 90s and I was so happy to see the movies were getting a reboot, but shheeeesh. RE hasn't had much success as a film. The greenscreen and CG in this one might be the worst I've ever seen in a modern big-budget movie. Almost felt like a good fan film at times. With all that said, would I pay to see its sequel. Yeah, unfortunately I would lol.
I'd see the sequel as well, but honestly they're better off starting over. They got too much wrong with this one. The story, the characters, the nature of the T-virus, the horror or lack thereof. It's a good movie to see if you're like a super casual fan of RE, like you barely know what it is. Because if you're even a little bit invested in the games? This movie's gonna grind your gears, almost as bad as the old RE movies would.
I had a lot of issues with this movie, but I think my biggest issue was the way they handled Leon’s characterization. Of course they’re adapting RE2, and at that point he wasn’t quite the badass that he turned into by RE4, he was just some guy trying to survive, but they made him a complete joke throughout the entire movie, just completely inept, and the only zombie I actually remember him killing, not including Birkin at the end, was just his way of angsting over being told to get his shit together by Claire, complete with the totally unnecessary screaming as he unloaded an entire clip into the thing. I think Avan Jogia actually did pretty good with what he was given, but what he was given sucked bad. It was really disappointing to see arguably the most popular character in the series reduced to that, and I hope if there is a sequel he gets his due justice
I hope to have a recast.. the guy is short and looks like crap. If I died my hair blonde and I would have been a better Leon than this one. Doesnt matter anymore if you are a good actor do you need just to check the WOKE boxes…
15:10 YES. Literally the only scene in the movie that I sat up in my seat for. Chris desperately fighting in the pitch black dinning room, switching guns and eventually to a knife as he ran out of ammo was 100% Resident Evil. BEST scene in the whole movie.
It had some good scenes and some inside references for those gamers who I am certain picked up on them! It could have been better though. A LOT better. Chief Irons? What were they thinking!
@Dawson Ages he was good for comedic reasons which would explain the actor they chose but it departed immensely from the character Irons originally portrayed.
@@Bunny2319b the lighter part was a little too much but it was a great idea. So many ideas in this movie that could have really made it a classic title
Hard disagree. Seems more like it was a fan film made by people who were different kinds of fans, like the ones Jake himself touches on when he says the movie wasn't for him but he could see others enjoying aspects he didn't like. The writers come off as people who were old school fans that especially liked the theme of Umbrella destroying a whole town out of negligence, which is probably why they focused so much on each character's answer to the question: "Why haven't I left RC?" The trucker hamfistedly drones on and on about it, Claire and Chris's conflict goes back to his staying and her leaving, Leon was banished to RC, and the other STARS officers either want to be gone or are fine where they're at. Irons tries to abandon his post, and Birkin endangers his family by staying for his research. The early games had a common theme around escape and feeling trapped and abandoned, and that's not something commonly understood after so many more recent games that follow the RE4 formula of searching for someone and killing every boss that stands in your way to find them. Real problem here is they weren't as good at film-making as they needed to be to win everyone's goodwill.
It hurts so much that the director talked about how much he loved the series and was a big fan of it all. Should have just split the movies into two separate parts. First one should have been straight horror, tight corridors, dark grim atmosphere, and make it anxiety inducing. The second one could have been more action oriented with a bit of flair. So mad its another flop.
I can agree. But it definitely followed the game more than the others. I would watch a sequel to this. I think we are too harsh. But they didn’t do Leon justice.
@Mrslothymacaroony When has Leon ever acted like that much of a moron in the original games? He was inexperienced, but never incompetent. When has Claire ever acted aloof or distant? She has always been kind and compassionate. When has Wesker ever been portrayed as a redeemable or sympathetic villain? The characters in this movie feel more like a parody to the characters in the games.
@@blueflare3848 to be fair there's a scene in re6 where Leon sees a few guys getting eaten by a mob of zombies and immediately declares he must find them and save them even though he both doesn't know where they are and they are very clearly already dead and this was at his most experienced point in the series so I mean...
@@oh-not-the-bees7872 It's still nowhere near like it is in this movie. The man didn’t even know how to use a shotgun despite being trained to be a cop.
I thought it was a mistake to combine RE1 and RE2. Should've stretched this out into a duology and have part 1 be a combination of RE0 / RE1 while part 2 can be a combination of RE2 / RE3. I also didn't like what they did to Leon.
I feel like they could have taken the characters and events from the first 3 games, and made it into a solid 8 episode mini series and maybe could have gotten a better result. Idk.
Yeah movies either pack to much of the story or make up their own parts while a series have multiple hour long episodes and different directors working on one project. So of course that would have been better
Thanks for the compliment. I am the Turn Around zombie, and I am a big fan of the games. I did my very best to mimic that scene as best as possible. Too bad you didn’t enjoy the whole movie, but all art is subjective so I have no Issues with your impressions. Take care :)
How they handled Leon hurt my soul and I struggled to enjoy any of the movie. I wanted them to at least do more but the second he said “I bet you’re wondering why a guy like me joined the force” and then says “me too” I was done. They made him useless in this. I get the rookie part but at least build him up. Just never executed on him. I hold it close because Leon is my favorite character of anything ever. The Chris scene in the mansion was definitely my favorite part of the movie. Would have loved a more focused movie only set in the mansion. Almost hope they get a sequel just to see Robbie Amell grow into Chris like we did with the games and give them a chance to redeem Leon…but doubt. My wife loved it, she never played the games though. Cheers bro, love the channel!
@@EthanRom kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk...fazer crescer os personagens??? Do jeito que são ruins, vão levar pelo menos uns 10 filmes pra conseguir consertar esses daí
They took one of the best, most awesome characters in gaming and turned him into an incompetent, useless moron. What they did to Leon is unforgivable. Like WTF?
They really should've told the story in two parts and then converge in the 3rd act. The constant switching back and forth between the mansion and police station really took away the intensity of each storyline. The movie could've started right off the bat where they get chased into the mansion like in the 1st game intro, and they explore the mansion, providing a sense of mystery and horror, then when Wesker finds the tunnel and reveals his intention, they can cut to Claire's storyline and build that part of the story, and finally all meet at the Umbrella lab. Also Leon and Jill characters were so underwhelming. Argh I had high hopes for this but quite disappointed...
I tried to go into it with an open mind but I just couldn't finish this movie, one scene (I won't spoil it) rendered me in total hysterics I couldn't figure out wtf I was watching 😂 and what they did to Leon in this movie was unforgivable lol does Capcom even know? Considering he's like the fan favorite to them they'd be pissed if they found out, as soon as I got through the last scene of a bumbling Leon and Claire snarkingly retorts with "are you done?" Me: "Yep I think I'm done" Switches off movie What a piece of shit LMAO
"Does Capcom EVEN KNOW?" I highly doubt it, since its brand name never once appears in any of the movie's opening logos, which is an oddity in this new era of video game movies!
I saw this movie in a theatre by myself high AF on edible gummies and I loved it! ❤️😅 The real test... Is when I watch it sober at home a month from now... Maybe I wont. I want to remember it being great. 🤷♂️😅
The problem with bad game to movie adaptations would be solved is if they would require the director or producer for at least 25 hours minimum of playing the game. That is not too much to ask as it involves a lot of money. Standard games only require 40-60 hours. They can't make a whole movie in just glossing some clips or screenshots. They need to play it for a short amount of time.
Like bro, you can literally beat these games in an hour. If the director was a true fan of the games, he wouldn’t be disrespecting the plot and characters by adding his own bullshit in. This guy had no idea what he was doing.
Paul WS Anderson played many many hours of the Resident Evil games and most of his movies were still trash. It's not enough to play the game. You have to know the lore and actually be a good writer.
It wouldn’t make any difference. Playing a video game is a far better way to experience this sort of story because YOU are in control. Adapting that into a film is a huge step backwards. The film-makers realise this and try to overcompensate with Easter eggs, references, catchphrases, monsters and locations.
@@SuperMurray2009 Paul WS Anderson didn’t play anything he lied and just took advantage of the Resident Evil title for cash grab & ruined it with his wife.
@@the-ish-1_21 He did take advantage of a Resident Evil cash grab but he did play the games. Look at his Twitter account. He constantly posted footage of himself playing Resident Evil.
I wish someone would give me (a nobody) 40 million dollar budget to make the Resident Evil movie all of us fans want. I have a script and everything! I'm confident I can make something fans would enjoy and most critics would hate lol.
@@termile7411 I'm not going to write out the entire script on here. I haven't figured out a proper ending yet... but most likely I would end it in a big Tyrant fight just like the first RE game. The dialog is incomplete as well. What I can tell you is that I would combine the beginning of RE zero train sequence. (Considering very few people like that game, I do though) then ending the train sequence in a crash (just like RE Zero) but instead of the umbrella research facility, they would crash near the Spencer mansion and the bravo team is forced to take shelter in the Spencer mansion because they are chased by Cerbersus. (Just like the first game). I would stick very closely to the first game and confine our characters into the mansion and lab for the entire 90 minute runtime. I would LOVE to make it very atmospheric, with devilish, dark, dank and dingy cinematography that the first RE remake game employed. I would focus on making it claustrophobic and dark. I think pacing, casting, cinematography and faithfulness to the games would enthrall fans. I would employ zero jump-scares and only focus on the fear of the unknown about what could be lurking behind each door. Keep the creatures as puppets and suits rather then CGI. While keeping them in the shadows to make them more scary. I think the orginal games had a very deliberate, slow and dreaded pacing. I would love to be able to bring that to our screens! It's not complete... but if a studio for whatever reason called me tomorrow and offered the job to me, I'd finish it in a few weeks.
@@ejkk9513 For what it's worth, you could change the names of your characters, the locations, and some major aspects of the plot. Give it a new title and use it as an original script. Many studios are looking for original low budget horror movies right now. I'd start by applying to some competitions and perhaps submitting to The Blcklst for feedback and script notes. Screencraft holds a yearly horror script competition, but there are many others out there. Coverfly is a good place to search for them. Competitions can be relatively expensive but it's cheaper the earlier you submit.
Would've made the film one of two ways: A mini series so we can introduce the characters more and get to know them; their dynamic. A self contained film only adapting the first game. A haunted house type film.
totally agree that a mini series would have really made this work so much better. there is just too much from all the games to be crammed into a movie.
exactly i'm commenting this ages after this was made but imagine if we could get a re show like tlou instead of a movie the setup could be based on the books and then they can do the first game and so on
I enjoyed the closeness to the game.. it brought back memories.. however, overall as a movie it’s a failure.. they ruined characters such as Leon and Jill for no reason at all.. it could’ve been so much better.. it was too short of a runtime to cram 2 games with of story into one movie.. it should’ve been an HBO or Netflix series especially after seeing the level of cgi and acting we got..
EVERYONE who saw the casting alone would’ve know this was a train wreck. If you can’t even bother on getting the casting right, then I wouldn’t expect for the source material to be any better. (Spoiler Alert, it wasn’t)
Chris and Claire were the only ones cast even close to well enough. I expected Wesker to be older and more calculated in his mannerisms. No shot intended against the actress herself, but she wouldn't be my first pick for Jill. Chief Irons? The character had no depth at all!
I agree. And while the ones who played Jill and Leon may be fine actors on other things, does that make them fine suited to play Jill and Leon? Not necessarily. At least the Paul Anderson movies did right by this and made them look like Jill and Leon we all know.
@@Godlike_Virus Leon was written as an incompetent COP in this film. Something completely out of his character. For a Rookie, Leon was very very competent which is how he got into Secret Service later. He is not an idiot and knows how to get things done on his own.
@B A as bad as those movies are.. psychic powers are not outside the realm of possibility within the Resident Evil Universe… heck a shit ton of villains have similar powers but they are all explained in a pseudoscience way
@Chris Terry oh yeah Midnight Mass isn’t for everyone. Only people with longer attention spans and don’t need to be wowed with explosions and gore every 5 minutes and constantly spoon fed the plot because they’re human goldfish can appreciate that show.
@@genghisjohn8628 lol exactly. That's why it wont get made. Unfortunately the masses don't want interesting stories, developed characters, genuine horror, etcetera. And this man is the voice of the masses.
I liked the same Chris part. Definitely the best part of the movie. The Director of Photography is the same guy who did Lights Out, so I'm not surprised he nailed that part. I actually thought they did an excellent job on the Ashford tape with the dragonfly, until that last camera pan. That ruined it. And yeah the zombie/not zombies was weird, didn't really explain why stars wasn't affected by it. And my god, they butchered the characters. They did Leon dirty. They did all the actors dirty. The director said this was a movie for the fans, but I don't think he understands what makes resident evil liked in the first place
They crammed waaayyy too much into this movie! They really blew their load in this too, like they should've pulled way back on the stick, set it only in the first game, the Spencer Mansion, threw a few curve balls while doing all the Easter eggs... Nothing had a Chance to breathe it just quickly jumps from plot point to Easter egg, and then most of it is forgotten and never brought up again. Lisa Trevor... Justso much potential that they pissed away without any real development. This should've been a series, like 10 hours with most of it set in the Spencer Mansion. Too bad, I hope the Netflix series does much better!
They shoulda did resident evil zero and resident evil 1 together. Then do re 2 and nemesis together because story wise those are actually around the same time but honestly they all shoulda been stand alone movies like a horror movie
I never would've pegged you for a "theatre feast" kinda bloke, Jake. Reminds me of that time in my teenage years when some mates and I snuck a whole KFC bucket into the cinemas. It wasn't the easiest or most enjoyable food to eat in a movie theatre, but it was more about the achievement itself, ya'know?
@@lordmark2516 I mean out of all the Resident Evils that I have fully played, it would be the last I would ever replay. It is nothing but action, the entire game. Even Leon's parts that are darker and have somewhat better atmosphere are hampered by the endless action. And the story was very predictable as well. I also never once ran out of ammo on all characters. The puzzles were boring. The characters I could care less for, unlike other games with Leon. I like Ada too, but not emotionally in any way. She is just badass. It just really doesn't feel like Resident Evil so I understand the hate completely. I don't hate it, but I don't like it either.
Honestly, I gotta say I preferred the first two Paul W.S. Anderson films to this one. The very first movie felt more like a side-story set in the game's universe that wasn't trying to attempt/bastardize any of the plots from the games, and I appreciated that, and the second one, while Alice-ing all over the place, was a pretty faithful adaptation of RE3, down to the absolutely amazing Nemesis costume and spot-on casting for Jill. This movie, while vastly superior to the other 4 live-action films, felt like a rushed and random mish-mash of the first two games that culminated in a conclusion that omits some of the best plot points and creatures from the original three games, with no real way of introducing them down the line given how things ended. And while the Easter Eggs were cool, they felt inserted without any of thought given to their original context, reducing them to moments of pandering. While they also did a solid job adapting some characters like Jill and Chris, they did a piss-poor job with characters like Leon and Wesker, and they completely forgot about best boy Barry!!! I'd say it's a 5 or 6 out of 10. Worth seeing once as a fan but that's it.
Não sei que trabalho sólido você está falando, ao se referir sobre a Jill, eu nem consegui ver a Jill nesse filme...aquilo lá parecia qualquer coisa, menos a Jill.
They clearly didn’t have time to do Mr. X, but if this thing even got a sequel, they can’t do a faithful Nemesis adaptation either given that they’ve already destroyed Raccoon City by the end and Jill escaped with the rest of the cast. Not only did this movie bastardize the games that it was supposed to be covering but it poisoned the well for future games to be properly adapted in this continuity too. Granted, I don’t want to see any more from this continuity, but still, it’s asinine. This was a bucket o’ shit.
There's brief glimpses into a great RE film here, but fans will detect any inconsistencies and it's no fault of their own. We live and breathe these games and those inconsistencies only serve to bring us out of the movie. For example when Annette in the movie asks, "William what have you been working on down here?" I'm like, "B**** you work with him!!!" Plus, Wesker's desire for complete global saturation and ascension to Godhood all started because the money was good and he wanted "To get out of this small town" 🤦
Yeah, it felt like they wanted to make Wesker more likable but then his reason for betraying his friends and now lover Jill is weak as hell. It also feels like they are trying to do RE1&2 then skip to like RE5 which seems incredibly stupid when 1-3 would make for at least 2 great movies if they were long enough.
My biggest concerns for resident evil movies is that everyone wants to skip over everything to hit the big monster plot points. Like the first game could be split between Chris/Rebecca and Jill/Barry with Richard and Wesker shuffling between plot lines just fine. With some reordering of events they could give us a good movie about our small team of heroes investigating the mansion while the storm and zombie dogs keep them trapped in there. Like all the major plot reasons we need to keep our characters present and working towards a goal is there in the first game, I don’t know why no one has just sat down and plotted it out!
The issues with this movie are budget and that they weren't sure how well it would be received so they went big. Could the movie have just been RE:1? Yes. Could the characters be better representations of what they were in the games? Yes too. But I do appreciate that they tried to make a movie that was more in line with the source material. I thought the monsters were a lot better than they were portrayed in the previous franchise and they actually took characters from the game and used them rather than have them randomly disappear. I enjoyed it and would be interested to see what direction they take it in.
I LOVED THE MOVIE!! But not for what you think. I loved the movie because it wasnt the other resident evil movies. I loved the movie because it was true attention to the actual games and the series proper. I loved the movie because even though things were definitely way different, I was happy to see an attempt at a faithful recreation of the first two games. I went with my two older brothers who LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Resident Evil. One of my brother spent all year on ebay this past year seeking out all of the playable Resident evil games, now he's on to test games that were never released to the public, he's that die hard. My other brother is just as obsessed and has S ranked every single mission, every minigame, every DLC, every add-on, he's 100% every single game and knows all there is to know. Me being 12 and 13 years younger, I wasn't as big of the series until I was much older, like maybe 2017-2018. I am know really really getting into it, I want to play all the games, im going in chronological order at the moment and man, this movie helped. Clearly, this movie took tons of liberties. I think they did great casting and I honestly think all the actors did great with the material, even wesker, even though he was a little bit uncharacteristic, the product wasnt genuinely bad. I think the movie did what it could, even though the first half was really tough to get through, especially the first 30 minutes. But the second half absolutely carried and made up for the movie not being as good as it couldve been. Overall, it did pander, it did have its bright spots, it did have wild pacing, but whoever made it had lvoe and passion for the series enough to try and be as faithful as possbile. I believe the next movie, or at least the making of 4 will be fantastic. They have an opportunity to make these movies pretty spectacular
After having seen it, it felt like just focusing on the Spencer Mansion would’ve been a solid ass movie. Even if they wanted to rope in the orphanage shit, they could’ve touched on how Chris hadn’t seen Claire in years, and it ends with her showing up.
You should do a interview/podcast with Alanah Pearce if scheduling isn't in conflict. She also shared her thoughts about the movie too and to hear both of you putting thoughts together of your synopsis of the movie, I think would be killer video. ❤️
Black Jill and Pakistani Leon spelled doom for this movie before it even came out. The fact the movie itself also suck is simply the nail in the coffin.
I remember watching an interview with the director of this movie talking about how he wants to capture the tone of resident evil 2 remake which is his main inspiration for this movie. Then the trailer dropped and all my hopes were shattered. Resident evil 4 is the game that got me into gaming, what an experience that was. That iconic over the shoulder perspective, amazing gunplay and level design. Spoiler alert AHEAD: Now I am hearing they disrespected my boi Leon and made him look like a joke in this movie
Video Game movies are weird. Big Studios see video game movies as a huge financial gamble. As a result, a lot of these movies are made by smaller studios with lower budgets whos publisher owns the rights. A lot of the more recent smaller studio movies (This Movie, Lora Croft, Mortal Kombat), while a bit closer to the source material, unfortunately end up being ok or mediocre. Not horrible but not amazing. If a big studio does have the money and talent, they end up changing so much about the source material to appeal to a wider audience that the source material just becomes a mediocre husk. It removes what made the source material special in the first place (Hitman, Monster Hunter, Assasins Creed and hopefully not Uncharted (im rooting tor uncharted). They might not be BAD movies if you remove the source material from them, but theyre bad to the fans of the source material. Castlevanias anime series on Netflix changed so much on how Video Games could be adapted to other mediums. Netflix took a huge risk on a series not even aimed towards Americans and it did so well it showed everyone that its not impossible to adapt Video Games in a respectful way and have them be a commercial success, and its through television. They wouldn't have greenlit the Witcher series (ik its more of an adaptation of the book version but it was marketed towards fans of the games) and HBO wouldnt have finally greenlit The Last Of Us. I understand there is no universe where the Metal Gear movie is a successful AND critically acclaimed movie (if it ever comes out), but there's still a part of my heart that prays that itll be video game movies Castlevania. Video Game movies havnt had there Castlevania yet. I would say Mortal Kombat kind of as it did pretty well with both fans and wider audiences, and it was a commercial and streaming success considering its budget, but I think publishers and studios demand more.
I literally just saw the film today, & I guess I am a minority as to my thoughts. I am a huge fan of the games, although unlike the people that didn't like it I was thoroughly entertained & impressed by everything except Birkin's second form. I hope we get way more from this franchise. The games are still much better, but I couldn't help having fun nonetheless
i just came back from watching it and feel the same i actually enjoyed and thought the soundtrack was good but some characters were misused but i knew that walking in so i just had a fun time. im just glad we finally got a live action movie based on the games because i didn't think we ever would
Well the glasses scene was at least better than wesker throwing his glasses at the camera in 3d... And why do the characters look so off? When I first saw a photo of Leon I was like hey cool Carlos is in this
yeah i should give it a go. But if its anything to judge the last 5 or so resie movies then im good. I just dont want to support directors who clearly do horrible jobs. It encourages them to produce more shit we dont wanna see 😊🤙
@@tizzlefoshizzle3132 Yea, it's nothing like the Paul RE films. It's actually pretty restrained in a lot of ways. it's honestly like a full length version of the 1996 live action intro. I can see why some people don't like the movie but I thought it was great. It's definitely a "bad" film but alot of it was intentional, the other aspects might be incompetence. Hard to say but if you do watch it, try not to get hung up on what you'd like to see. I took the film for what it is and quite enjoyed it. It's super unique, for better or worse.
Jake, tomorrow you will wake up and realize that the Milla Jov movies were better. I'm a hardcore RE fan, and I am in tears because this was such a disappointment. The only acting in the movie was little Claire and that lasted 5 minutes in the beginning. They had some good ideas but they didn't execute them well.
That's like saying the shit you took in the toilet earlier this morning was better than the one you had at the evening. At the end of the day they are both shit.
My biggest gripe is that wesker wasn’t an obvious villain in the story. The movie makes it like an initiation process of wesker to an eventual villain later in the franchise. However in the games, he has a much deeper history with umbrella, and is totally a villain. The betrayal scene wasn’t decisive enough. I wanted to hate him more than I did in the movie. Also sad that ada doesn’t have her flirtation scenes with Leon. :/
I just finished watching it. Once they got to the mansion I paused to get a drink and was like, I’ve been watching this for 43 minutes and the movie is just starting?!?!
I feel like he would be a good early Leon but not so much RE4 and onward Leon. I don’t think I could take him seriously as a badass if they were to do a movie with him adapting the RE 4 story. I’d love to see like a stand alone movie about that game but not with him
Apart from a different cast, they need a new writer, WTF was that Leon, Lisa and Jill???? (And many other characters). Different doesn't always mean good.
I started playing resident evil starting with code Veronica. Every time I couldn’t get through a part of the game my dad would come in and do it for me. Such great memories love the franchise to death, and I’m definitely still watching the movie even if it’s a disappointment.
They are both very similar in alot of ways in where they both faulter. Crappy origin type movie, awful writing, too busy trying to lead up a bigger sequel than focusing on its own movie, etc etc lol
Arcane really set the stage for what all future game movies/shows should be. Focus on creating a story around the beautiful and incredible worlds these games take place in, don't just give us fan service with mid tier acting. If we wanted to watch the same exact story play out then we would play the games, but either way respect to them for trying it out
I haven't seen it yet, but already I feel like they should've done the mansion in one film and 2 in a sequel. It would've made more sense and given each a fleshed out movie.
thanks for this video! I felt the same!! love resident evil! but this movie 🎬 really put me down. So much potential yet they ruined 2 game story's and characters why did they make Leon so weak!!
Hey. I am 30. Lol. Yeah, this is rather disappointing. I'm a big Resident Evil fanboy as well, and to see a movie franchise being rebooted for this that was gonna stay more related to the games than whatever the past RE movies were was so exciting! Now that I hear this, I honestly don't even have that much hope for the Super Pratt-Day Bros movie lol.
Your review on WtRC was pretty much spot-on, and I agree with most of it. Roberts spent so much time on these references and Easter eggs that he failed to produce anything truly worthwhile. The writing felt amateurish and silly. The whole movie was filled with half-baked ideas and horrible story and character alterations that served no purpose other than to ruin the memory of the originals. The CGI was horribly shoddy. I remarked to someone that the entry scene in the Spencer Mansion looked green-screened. The person said it was real, but you confirmed my suspicion. Part of the sequence may have been real, but some of it definitely appears animated, as if the actors were the only real thing in the shot. I seriously doubt this movie will have a sequel, given its poor reviews from fans and critics alike, but even if it does, I couldn't care less. One trainwreck is more than enough.
The small scale was a great word for it. The character approach was either in your face or questionable. They should've focused on one particular story to flesh out major points. The rest of the cast was actually not bad, with Claire stealing the show in almost every scene. The story DRAGS until the last few minutes where you finally meet the final villain and everything is RUSHED and EXTREMELY underwhelming. Chief Irons actor was pretty good but wasted. Wesker actor was meh. Jill needed more screen time; Leon was awful, just good looks, but gave him NO improvements. Claire took the show, and Chris was pretty good. William Birkin had zero character development, and how they made him in the end was TERRIBLE. cgi was also pretty bad. Zombies were inconsistent with their design. Lisa Trevor ... what? They tried and didn't do much. And yet, Paul W.S. Anderson was still a part of this film in the credits ... sighs. My favorites were Williams transformation while stalking Chris ...when it should've been Leon. And the introduction to a licker.
As a younger fan of the RE series (I’m 19) I’ve played every game that came out after 4. I’ve done the obvious 4,5,6 some of 7 and I’m playing 8 and I’ve played the 2 remake and 3 remake. Seeing how much Of 2 they tried to put into it and I was confused because I didn’t watch any of the trailers I was just like awesome it’s a raccoon city movie I need to see it. I thought I would see a 2 and 3 mash up but to see RE 1 and 2 mashed up the time line is just so fucky. The lore and seeing how Claire and Chris finally meet in 2 I was like why is that happening? That was the whole point for 2. I like creative freedom but I think what ruined it for me was expectation. The reason I say that is because the more actiony movies (the Alice series) I knew it wasn’t going to have a lot with the lore but then knowing ok this is raccoon city they have to go with the story of raccoon city but when seeing that Chris and Leon meet it’s like wasn’t Chris not even supposed to be there yet? I’ve ranted for too long but the fan service for me was great to see IMO but the movie just messes with the lore which sucks for me.
Had a whole town, and only used “places” to check off the fan service list. It had potential and could have been great. Editing or placement of characters felt off. It was there and somehow it slipped through the cracks. Everything went nowhere and butchered the cgi. Being able to say hey I know that scene, that’s from the game, doesn’t create a whole story. Was underwhelming. Could have had the birds attack the helicopter, but we just get two scenes of single dead crows, one dead dog, couple of zombies, almost all at the mansion, until it’s not. Plots leading nowhere. Zombies where underwhelming. Lisa knowing who Clair was only meeting each other for 3min as kids. To knowing who this older lady is now. But yet I know when a new movie comes out. I’ll be there...Damnit!🤦♂️
Hilarious how the director Johannes Roberts kept reassuring everyone he was bringing the movies back to how the games really are when the movie was absolute garbage. I can forgive Paul W. S. Anderson but I can't and won't forgive Johannes Roberts.
I just realized the dumbest thing about this movie is that its called resident evil: Welcome to RACCOON CITY. key word there "CITY", where the hell is the city at? raccoon city is one of the most well known video game cities and in this movie its just some small ghost town, there isn't a city in sight, just a couple of neighborhoods and a police department which makes even less sense because if raccoon "city" is a ghost town then what the hell do you need a special police force for? this movie would've been perfect it if it were released on April 1st, because the whole concept of this movie is a complete joke. for anybody that doesn't know much about resident evil, if you want to see the real raccoon city then just look at the re2 or re3 remake, or even the original re3, thats what raccoon city is SUPPOSED to look like. this movie could've been a city crawling with mr.x's, zombies and nemesis, and instead we got this, very sad indeed.
I mostly play the action Resident Evil games not the survival horror ones. But I love the RE2 remake and am happy because we finally get an RE movie that's a survival horror movie not an action one. I have mixed feelings about how Leon is depicted(stupid) instead of naïve. Also, would've loved to see him cap a few extra zombies. But I like how he saves the day by wasting Birkin with the rocket launcher. Regardless of how many people this pleases, I'm grateful that this movie got made because it tries to make fans happy instead of filmmakers doing what they want and ignoring the fans (like a certain James Bond movie recently released). So I say in a Hollywood where fanservice is becoming less common, let's try to enjoy this the best we can and give credit to the director for doing something that should've been done a long time ago when the first RE movie was made in 2001.
Leon is a bad ass character. But in this movie they made him an idiot, like WTF!!!If you can't make an actual good Resident Evil movie, rather leave it alone. We will play the game.
@@jenn5628 I agree with you 100% and i get his a rookie here. But Leon is no idiot, i mean he was dumb in this movie. It wasn't even funny. The movie was trash.
Completely agree saw it yesterday and there’s too many times we’re I was like “oh are they going to do it” and they don’t do it. Like no spoilers but the cell scene with Ben like how much of disappointment not to have mr x in that scene. And by far the after credit scene made me the most mad I have been in a resident evil movie
I absolutely hated this movie. I agree that there were some nice fan service elements but I hated that they mashed the two first games together, missed so much of the good story each game has to tell, the way noone except for Chris looks like they do in the game, that Barry was missing, that Mr. X was missing, the god awful audio mix they did, that almost the complete first half is just boring as shit, the most dissapointing "boss fight" in movie history and so on and so forth. It's better than the previous movie adaptation, I give them that but that doesn't mean much since they were absolute dog shit to begin with.
I'll agree to that about the Chris defending himself scene. That was really cool the way they did it and was jarring in comparison to the rest of the film. That 2 minute sequence was fucking cool
hey man keep putting out vids like this if it helps you, it's fun to hear you talk about things. Even if you're not super into the thing you're talking about I'd wager a bunch of people enjoy your vids like this.
I’m still excited for this film regardless. Even if it’s just a cheap reaction of mini cameos from the game, I’ll be okay with it. Lots of movies feel rushed nowadays due to Covid times.
@@JakeBaldino and that’s just it right? I’ve come to the conclusion that most movies made during Covid won’t reach peak due to restrictions so why go in knowing it’s going to be shit or dare I say mediocre…? Go in knowing what’s there and what’s not, enjoy it for what it is and acknowledge what it could’ve been but don’t grasp on to that. Enjoy a film that was made for fan service!
How great would a 6 part mini series set in the spencer mansion be. Make it a horror mystery about the Stars team not only solving how to get out of the labyrinthine manaion but also having to deal with the creatures inside. I just wish constantin films lost the RE rights because everything leads back to them with the bad movies.
My biggest disappointment is how they completely destroyed LEON coz Leon is the main guy for resident evil not clair. dis is one of the worst resident evil movies ever. From characters to story. Had 2 watch the anime movies 2 recover.
21:15 “…and you’re 30, and there’s something wrong with you, and everyone’s saying ‘give it up loser!’ and you’re not…” 😂 that was the best! Basically how I feel my family feels about me loving games/ all things game related.
I love how every character treated leon like trash, its crazy leon looks super mexican in this movie, and I thought it was racist they made jill a hispanic, I understand valentine is a hispanic last name but to actually make the character hispanic...wow I felt it was super racist
The story & acting was really bad, so I don't really care about it ,but why do they always say things like" flashes of creativity",when talking about making needless diversity changes, like Leon being changed into a brown boy
As soon as I saw the trailer I said 2 things: 1) It looks like a fan film more than a major studio production. 2) They're making this movie just to hold on to the rights. I stand by both. It's not rocket science what they need to do. Start with Zero & make each mainline game it's own movie while making the spinoffs & side games like Outbreak & Gun Survivor direct to streaming movies.
I loved the old RE films. I really liked that we followed Alice who then joined up with characters from the RE universe. The characters she met up with were actually good and you knew who they were before they got their name called They get hate but actually they were really fun films
I looked at this as stupid fun and I enjoyed the movie to some degree. However as a huge resident evil fan I couldn't believe how they cuckold Leon. Unacceptable haha
It's just a bad lazy movie … I didn’t like it at all … for some reason, the characters feel disjointed, not the effort of them. Hope 🙏 one day someone can make a decent movie of Resident Evil.

I don't understand why none of these movies ever want to tell a straightforward scary story in the mansion? Like, the first game is the scariest one: why not make an *actual* horror movie based on the horror franchise?
It's always the kitchen sink with these movies. Keep it simple. Stick to the source material. Capture the scares!
it's a haunted mansion! the movie should write itself
Or cast the damn characters like how they looked in the game. This diverse casting bullshit is passing me off.
Agreed with a lot of what you said, but I couldn't stand Leon. If he was anyone but Leon, the character would have just been okay. Him being Leon though was just pissing me off lol

They needed way more than $25 million. Its shows lol
We ain’t getting a sequel buddy
@donald trumpp YES he looked almost nothing like leon
Because it’s a movie not a video game

@@ssj-rose4572 and it cant decide if it wanted to look like the games or be its own thing. at least the old RE was being its own adaptation
I totally agree. Just not when he took out the lighter and knew there was a zombie coming towards him lol
@Dawson Ages he was good for comedic reasons which would explain the actor they chose but it departed immensely from the character Irons originally portrayed.
@@Bunny2319b the lighter part was a little too much but it was a great idea. So many ideas in this movie that could have really made it a classic title

Sounds like a film made by people who researched what fans like about Resident Evil, but who were not fans themselves.
Like they RUclipsd “top 10 iconic RE moments” and were like okay we gotta put that in lol
Hard disagree. Seems more like it was a fan film made by people who were different kinds of fans, like the ones Jake himself touches on when he says the movie wasn't for him but he could see others enjoying aspects he didn't like. The writers come off as people who were old school fans that especially liked the theme of Umbrella destroying a whole town out of negligence, which is probably why they focused so much on each character's answer to the question: "Why haven't I left RC?"
The trucker hamfistedly drones on and on about it, Claire and Chris's conflict goes back to his staying and her leaving, Leon was banished to RC, and the other STARS officers either want to be gone or are fine where they're at.
Exactly
This is like they "mod" the movie 😁
It hurts so much that the director talked about how much he loved the series and was a big fan of it all.
Should have just split the movies into two separate parts. First one should have been straight horror, tight corridors, dark grim atmosphere, and make it anxiety inducing. The second one could have been more action oriented with a bit of flair. So mad its another flop.
I can agree. But it definitely followed the game more than the others. I would watch a sequel to this. I think we are too harsh. But they didn’t do Leon justice.
He claims he's a fan, yet he managed to get every single aspect of the characters wrong.

Mini series are the way to go for book or game adaptations
Yeah movies either pack to much of the story or make up their own parts while a series have multiple hour long episodes and different directors working on one project. So of course that would have been better
Facts being condensed into a film doesnt give anything enough time to breathe.

How they handled Leon hurt my soul and I struggled to enjoy any of the movie.

Could I read your script? Is it posted any where I love reading fan scripts. I did one myself ha

Some of the casting was good(mainly just Chris tbh)
@B A as bad as those movies are.. psychic powers are not outside the realm of possibility within the Resident Evil Universe… heck a shit ton of villains have similar powers but they are all explained in a pseudoscience way
After watching Midnight Mass, I think Mike Flanagan should take over and remake the whole franchise!
now that would be sick
Dude YES
@Chris Terry oh yeah Midnight Mass isn’t for everyone. Only people with longer attention spans and don’t need to be wowed with explosions and gore every 5 minutes and constantly spoon fed the plot because they’re human goldfish can appreciate that show.
@@genghisjohn8628 lol exactly. That's why it wont get made. Unfortunately the masses don't want interesting stories, developed characters, genuine horror, etcetera. And this man is the voice of the masses.
Thats a great idea!!!
JV fans devastated.
They sort of mentioned the immunity. Nothing solid though.

Jake Muller? From resident evil 6 game
@@lordmark2516 we dont talk about that game
@@psychotropictraveler514 YALL dont I do I dont know why it gets so much hate
Jill was awful, but agree with a lot of what you said
Não sei que trabalho sólido você está falando, ao se referir sobre a Jill, eu nem consegui ver a Jill nesse filme...aquilo lá parecia qualquer coisa, menos a Jill.
I gave it a 2/10
Normally, spoiling a film is bad. But in this case, JUST DO IT TO SAVE EVERYONE'S TIME AND MONEY
After watching this movie I had to go back and play the game just to make things right for me
They clearly didn’t have time to do Mr.
This was a bucket o’ shit.
i think the only the story they could do for a sequel is code veronica x i'm still disappointed that we'll never get mr x or nemesis
There's brief glimpses into a great RE film here, but fans will detect any inconsistencies and it's no fault of their own. We live and breathe these games and those inconsistencies only serve to bring us out of the movie. For example when Annette in the movie asks, "William what have you been working on down here?"
I'm like, "B**** you work with him!!!"
Plus, Wesker's desire for complete global saturation and ascension to Godhood all started because the money was good and he wanted "To get out of this small town" 🤦
This and Netflix's Cowboy Bebop really sour the trust that I gained in adaptations after watching Dune 2021.
Dune wasn’t good either. Just looked nice

How hard could it really be to make these movies good, just following the bare minimum story of the games?
IKR!!!
Hollywood gotta Hollywood. The material's already there, but noooope studio execs and filmmakers gotta have their own vision!
God if you think this is bad, imagine how star wars fans feel
These movies will continue to be bad because the producers of the movie never really care about making the movie great. It's a cash grab.

@@MeatPlanet Nice one. Your response made me think. The truth is that some shit is better than others.
Movie should have started when the helicopter was flying over the forest.
And just about the first game.
Dane DeHaan would maybe be a perfect Leon S. Kennedy. Someone please make a good Resident Evil movie around him.
I feel like he would be a good early Leon but not so much RE4 and onward Leon. I don’t think I could take him seriously as a badass if they were to do a movie with him adapting the RE 4 story. I’d love to see like a stand alone movie about that game but not with him

Saw this after a few beers and puff. I 100% agree with your review. Kinda was bored and let down.
Hate it.
It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't the worst movie I've seen this year is the best way I can describe it

The story & acting was really bad, so I don't really care about it ,but why do they always say things like" flashes of creativity",when talking about making needless diversity changes, like Leon being changed into a brown boy
As soon as I saw the trailer I said 2 things:
1) It looks like a fan film more than a major studio production.
2) They're making this movie just to hold on to the rights.
I stand by both.
It's not rocket science what they need to do. Start with Zero & make each mainline game it's own movie while making the spinoffs & side games like Outbreak & Gun Survivor direct to streaming movies.
Extremely obvious but they'll never do it.
They would make so much money if they did it that way
@@SSOAPride0935 They would make a literal fortune. So I want to know which idiots at the studio make this impossible to do?
@@angellight495 I guess the producers that know nothing about the game and don’t play it lol
@@SSOAPride0935 No, they just see a cash cow & can't figure out why it's not paying.
I loved the old RE films. I really liked that we followed Alice who then joined up with characters from the RE universe. The characters she met up with were actually good and you knew who they were before they got their name called
They get hate but actually they were really fun films
I’m still mad they killed Chris though
So was this movie connected to the previous 6 movies or is it a reboot?
@@stickman4087 Reboot.

Thank you!
New subscriber here ✨ I’m a big resident evil fan as well and I think I had higher expectations for this. Great review. Thank you for making this!
Thanks!!
