He actually touched on something I have felt for some time now. We are at a point where many of the games have better writing, directing, editing, acting, and even CGI effects.
This video made me realize that too. I had much more enjoyment and was far more impressed with the RE2 remake game than any zombie movie I've ever watched. And I'm just talking about cut scenes!
Well one of the biggest critics I've seen ppl made of the most recent adaptation of dune is that they broke the story up into two parts.. Seems like film makers get flak for both cases.

I’m a firm believer in the fact that video game adaptations should only be in tv series form. No need to rush the story and you can take more time developing the characters. It’s worked pretty well so far

I agree a TV show let’s you have more time to get stuff in from the games properly a movie you wouldn’t be able too unless you plan on doing a Snyder cut which isn’t really possible for a big screen showing

They literally could have done the first game in this run time. There's enough material to start at the mansion and end up in the laboratory with the Tyrant. Milla Jovovich movie made it work in a lab. Putting RE1 & 2 together in one movie was already a flag.

Angel Otero If Lisa Trevor wasn’t in the movie it wouldn’t of impacted the story whatsoever. They butchered the licker and made it less intimidating by having Lisa kill it , that was just ridiculous. The movie just seemed rushed , unfinished , and had bad acting. The only part I liked was when they started encountering all those zombies in the mansion , other than that … I can’t see myself watching this movie again.

They only want your money, and only care about bringing in the dollars based on a popular and beloved franchise, even though RE has never really been known for having a great plot; it did always have characters who stood out, and were memorable, and relatable, and had campy dialogue and campy moments, but these movies that try to call themselves RE, were just crappy, instead of campy. The first one comes close to being a good movie, with Phyllis or Ally, or whatever her name was. It doesn't have any of the characters from the games in it, but the characters they did have weren't all boring and generic. And the atmosphere in that movie did have some legitimately scary moments, but while it ultimately fails as an RE movie, it almost worked, I guess?

As Arcane series showed us it’s pretty easy to make a good game adaptation, the tricky part is that you have to care about your product, not just about the cash.
I honestly believe the first RE game could pretty much just be adapted beat for beat and make a perfectly good movie. All they would have to do is drop some of the puzzles, seriously, the plot content of the first game is short as hell.
Completely agree. We do NOT need video game movie adaptations. We've got the games themselves. Especially for RE2. Look at whether you're playing the 1998 original on the n64/ps1(yes, there were 2 different versions of RE2, on 2 different consoles, the n64 port was ironically the better port), or the RE2 Remake, where both Leon and Claire are given more character development, along with their partner characters, Sherry and Ada. Plus, Ada looks better in HD than she did back in 1998, no joke. But I agree, dude/lady. We don't need game movie adaptations. Especially if they're just lazier and dumbed down versions of the game's plots. And especially if the film's director is an ass who actually changed Leon's ethnicity ON purpose, to INTENTIONALLY piss people off, and intentionally made him incompetent, out of spite and hatred. No really, he legitimately ruined Leon's character from the games to make this pile of dogshit. He also made Claire a conspiracy theorist, even though she's never been like that in any RE game, at all. Also, this version of Claire looks like she's in her early 40's, when she's supposed to be a college age student(19), in RE2, looking for her older brother Chris, who was 25 when the original RE Mansion Incident happened. Wesker was 38, the same age as Barry Burton, Leon was 21, and had literally just joined the RPD because he was interested in the bizarre hunting incidents that were happening in Raccoon City, and had just graduated from the police academy. The reason he was late for his official first day was because he was partying in a motel the previous night, trying to get over the pain of having to break up with his girlfriend, and overslept the previous day. But if he hadn't done that, who knows? Maybe Leon would've been infected like the rest of the unlucky people in Raccoon City? But the backstory I just explained to you is verbatim from the RE Archive book I've owned since 2005, which goes through the first 4 RE games, and explains all the characters themselves who've shown up since RE0 to RE:CV. But at least it explains them well. This movie just looks and feels incompetent. Like a rookie on their first day, trying and failing to show that they're suitable for the job, only, this movie just f**ks around INTENTIONALLY, and although it adds some things from the first 2 RE games, there's no reason to watch this, when we have the Remakes of RE1 and 2. Which tell the stories that this movie attempts and fails at. Even the CGI RE movies are better movies, and the RE games do a much better job telling us who these characters are, their backgrounds, their birthdays, ages, personalities, even their middle names, like for example, Leon's middle name is Scott. And he's always protective of women, and has a thing for Ada Wong. Even in the remake. His look and even his name were both inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio. No joke. You see? That whole story I just told you about Leon Scott Kennedy, does more to explain who he is as a character and his personality is better explained, than some awful movie, directed by someone who I guarantee has never even TOUCHED a controller or played an RE game in their life, just saw dollar signs whenever they brought up the name to him. Sorry if I sound angrier than I intended, but I'm just somewhat passionate about this series, and Leon is my favorite RE character, and RE2 and it's remake, along with RE4 are my favorite RE games. Mainly because of Leon. But you're right. We thankfully live in a world where games give us the same experience we'd see in a movie, whether that's intended or not. I love that Jeremy has been watching and reviewing movies for so long that he has a deeper critical lense than he did when he was starting out. He doesn't give as many movies a "pass" like he use to.
My first thought when watching this movie that continued as it went on was “this is not how people talk.” It was obvious that the actors didn’t care and were just phoning it in which I can get with a script like this. The whole time everything just seemed like aliens wearing human skins and trying to act like humans. What they did to Leon’s character was a huge injustice and at one point I just burst out laughing at how terrible a scene was. It just felt so choppy and unnatural.

not gonna lie, watching this new Resident Evil i kept thinking about silent hill movie, something about the colors or the vibe was similar to it, like you know you're watching a movie about a video game instead of just watching a movie
Just looked up the director of this film and he hasn't made a single decent film in his entire career. He mostly does low-budget horror films that have an IMDB rating in the range of 2.0 - 6.0. That should already give you an indication of how good this movie will be.
Not surprised at all, a movie based on Resident Evil game have so much potential and i'm so angry that an opportunity like that wasted, handed somebody who's last film was literally 47 Meters Down Uncaged, and somehow he continues to make movies that's barely anything recommended from its movie, it's embarassing

I agree, the part where Chris was fighting in the dark was very well done. It was very oppressive and you can almost feel the desperation of trying to survive. That was probably the only good scene and that's shame.
The first Resident Evil film with Milla Jovovich, despite not accurate to the videogames, was a solid zombiefilm with some great scares! They should've just focussed the first RE Remake film on the entire Mansion Incident and cast solid actors who can play the characters. Wesker should be the leader of the group, not some pushover that I've seen in the trailers for this movie...

The movie was amazing imo. If your a true fan of the games, then you'll enjoy this movie. This movie more than impressed me. Only problem, tried cramming too much story into less than 2 hour movie. But the story itself was amazing still imo. I loved Claire.
You are so right! The first Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel are two great adaptations. From Dusk till Dawn and Planet Terror also proved that he could handle monster genre (with excellent B-movie flavour) really well. Rodriguez is also exceptional with a smal budget so he could really make this low budget picture look like a million bucks! Dammit, the man was born to make Resident Evil into a movie!
The most standout characters in RE series are actually Chris & Leon, then come Claire & Jill, then the rest. Chris or/& Leon are in almost every RE popular (main) games. It's downright frustrating the movie butchered both characters massively.
Hopefully they do the characters justice. The premises of the movie would make sense as your in the city at the same time but from different parts of the city. It only makes sense to do it in 1 movie where it swings from 1 team to another. Just my opinion though
This one image pretty much sums up my impressions of how Johannes Roberts approached making this adaptation. In one recently released interview clip, Roberts admitted that he went back and forth between including a Tyrant in the film. But then he chose not to, claiming he could not make it “tonally fit”? Roberts went on to say that he decided to have an Easter egg in place of that, where viewers can see a severed Tyrant’s head in the background of Birkin’s lab. Yet, he also admits that he could not shoot the scene, in a way that made his intended Easter egg easily visible. So in other words, an essential part of the source material’s story, characters, and world-building, which many fans want to see in its full glory, gets decapitated and turned into glorified superficial set-dressing. And it is not even something you can easily spot, without working hard to look for it. I think that seems to be a perfect visual analogy for the rest of the film’s approach to adapting Resident Evil.

I would say yes but after seeing what we're gonna get for the Netflix live action series it seems like no one knows how to properly adapt resident evil into film or television
even Dragon Ball in animated films manages to make a whole arc of a completely new story in less than 2 hours, because when they decide to make films of works like this in live action, they always have to start from a premise of trying to retell the story from the beginning, from a form all twisted or with characters miserably uncharacterized?

I've never played League of Legends in my life, I was never interested in it... Arcane, however, is one of the best animated series I've ever seen in my entire life. It's visually perfect, the story is captivating, the voice actors are perfect, to me it's an instant classic. You're absolutely right Jeremy, assuming people haven't played a game is the recipe for a good movie or series based on a video game.
yeah I was told by a co-worker about Arcane and as a person who have played LoL quite a lot I got turned off so to speak by how the series/movie is done. But maybe ill give it a shot
@@likemysnopp It is phenomenal. I admittedly don't care about the game, was never my cup of tea, but the show on it's own is incredible. I'm heavily biased because I'm an animator by trade, and an animated show of this caliber just doesn't come around often. I highly recommend watching it.

I wouldn't say it was in my top story-wise. The animation and overall look of the show is incredible though. A visual feast, if you will. Best looking that I have seen, and you're right about the voice work.
A fan-made movie would've at least tried to be as faithful to the source material as possible, given that it was made by someone who actually has played the games and liked them enough to make a little movie about it ^^

Many people don’t understand how deep resident evils gameplay actually is and what made it successful, the original trilogy is based on a chess system, each cog affects a whole wheel of effects. Also look at the documents and the lore. Or atleast resident evil 1 remake, original 2 and original 3, not to mention resident evil 4
Yeah, my main issue is none of the remake stuff should be in the film at all - the originals were the essential - unless you’re going to give us zombies and disaster like that why bother? Eh, capcom doesn’t know what to do to make this stuff good. They should sell the movie rights to people who give a shit.
In my opinion of what to make it works is: just make it like suspense horror movie (28 Days Later), where the protagonist struggle to find a way out.. and it should be a slow pacing film, minimum action, right amounts of jumpscares, feels of isolations, and good actings… neverminds the right or not of how Leon looks is.
Hey, It's ok, dude/lady, I would've cried too, and I'll cry with you if nobody else will. Because Leon Scott Kennedy is my favorite RE character, and has been since his first appearance in RE2(the original, not just the remake, although that is great too). Leon is the perfect RE protagonist, and just kept getting cooler and better with each game. Even RE6(even if you, like the majority of the world, hate 6, at least Leon looked cool in that game, still had the cool jacket, cool hair style, and cool voice and personality, and best story in 6). And when I literally sat down for 5 minutes to see the awful, cheaply produced, direct-to-DVD style editing of the trailer, I knew it would be a crapfest of a movie. I knew it would suck. It's not that hard to see, but still. I was a bit hyped up, hoping they'd fix some of these errors before launch, but down in my heart, my gut, I knew that they wouldn't, and that this movie was going to straight up SUCK some serious s**t. Seriously, as a longtime and hardcore fan of this series, ever since the original RE 2 on the n64, playing it as a kid, with my dad, it was the first horror game I'd ever played. Something about the box art just made me want to play it. I loved every second of it. Plus, seeing how cool and brave Leon was, was something I wanted to be like. Also, the reason he was late to his first day of work on September 29th, was the fact that he'd been partying the previous day, in a motel, trying to get over the pain of breaking up with his girlfriend, and overslept. Anderson failed at this, and now whoever the director/producer/writer/actors, shoot, you can even add the craft services of this crapshoot to the list as well. Paul Anderson did get Leon's look right in his crap movies, and the hairstyle, but got his personality wrong, because he literally swapped it with another character, for seemingly no reason. Why can't they adapt Leon's character correctly in a movie? It's not impossible to do. Guess only the games know how to do it right. As usual, Jeremy's right. The RE2 remake, original, and definitely RE4 and 6 gave us the true portrayal of Leon we all THOUGHT we needed to look for, high and low, when the REAL answer to how we could find a seriously awesome portrayal of Leon Kennedy was right in front of us the whole frigging time. Especially if you've ever played RE4. Sorry if this is a bit too long of a message. I just really enjoy RE and it's my favorite horror game series, and Leon is my favorite RE character.
To be fair Leon was an idiot in Resident Evil 2 who was easily manipulated by Ada. He was admirable because he was a good person, He starts getting better in resident evil 4.

Resident evil was amazing back when it came out on playstation 1 all those years ago because there wasn't any other zombie game, people had never seen anything like it before. Now everyone has seen this, just like Jurassic Park, dinosaurs is like whatever now. They need a new direction, like a really good story.
Ya know as someone who hadn't played the games...I actually enjoyed the movie 😅. Like everything with the mansion I wasn't really engaged with, but the build up to the outbreak, seeing the sick towns people and just waiting for that ball to drop with dread (basically what I understand to be the Resident Evil 2 part of the movie) I dug.
Oh and Leon. My friends (have played the game) and I enjoyed his character in this film. We were laughing at how inept he was. Disservice to the character? Maybe. But it was damn entertaining.

I think Brett Dalton would make a good Albert Wesker. He basically played the later version of Wesker in Agents of SHIELD season 3. He’s a tall guy in a trench coat with a mostly monotone voice who has an intense personality and fighting abilities, who also mutates to some degree by the end of the season. To me he‘s be perfect.
Honestly Leon's whole outfit was on point which I loved, but his hair and the fact that he was a complete idiot for most of the movie was a major insult to his character.
The first 2 Resident Evil games are really easy and really good to make suspensive movies about. You can make such a good zombie horror movie about the first game specifically. I don’t understand why Hollywood has such a stupid amount of trouble with this.
Unfortunately, video game movies and horror movies are two genres that Hollywood knows they can put no effort in, and still make a quick buck. In theory, a good Resident Evil movie could be made, but Hollywood will never be able to resist going for a soulless cash grab instead.

The characters are among the worst part of this movie. However I thought they portrayed Chief Irons fairly well along with Chris, who was hilariously bland and clueless exactly how he was in RE1 and RE1 Remake. Idk if that was intentional or just bad writing but they nailed him lmao
@My names Jeff very true, I’m very open minded and can enjoy things that aren’t true to the canon/lore but for me the characters have to somewhat resemble the source material. Leon was heavily exaggerated on the rookie part. Claire was spot on. Jill was too cocky and arrogant. Wesker was an entirely different person altogether. Birkin was mehhh. I wish they had Barry, Rebecca, and Mr X but I think it was already too bloated of a cast as it is.

The scenery and that 90s feel was much appreciated. I think if the director got another stab at it, he would be receptive to the criticism and might be able to pull it off a second go around.

I was a huge RE fan when I was young. I was SO hyped for the original RE movie when it came out, and I ended up being really disappointed at the matrix-style action movie we were all given. I liked the RE games because they were horror games, and what I saw in theatres years ago was decidedly not a horror movie. I was pretty disappointed. I watched this film last night. It's like most video game movies: the acting isn't the best, it seems to have been done on a pretty low budget, the pacing and dialogue are odd. Pretty standard for a movie based on a video game. What I DID enjoy was that this film mirrored what I had imagined a RE movie looking like back in the day, before Paul W.S. Anderson got ahold of the IP. Will I watch it again? Probably not. But I appreciate that the filmmakers wanted to make something a little closer to the source material. I don't regret seeing it.
They were in a sense, but they looked more like raving lepers than actual zombies. The bald one that did the iconic head turn looked appropriate to what you’d see in the game, but that was about it in the zombie department.
They should of made it longer. Added Barry and fixed the characters. Leon looks different. If they are going to play the part at least look like the real characters.

I would love someone with actual talent and movie-making experience to make a Legend of Zelda movie. I feel that Resident Evil would work better as a limited TV series. That way you can develop the characters better, as long as you have writers who are worth a damn.
Yes, if they could make a decent Zelda-movie it would be sweet. What I worry is that they would not do it justice, but butcher it like so many game movies had been in the past. Unfortunately they just seem to not know how to adapt video games into movies.

My favorite parts of the movie were when the main characters would get swarmed by zombies and need to find a way out or in an impossible situation or "mr x"(scientist who i can't membah) has to get past everybody in order to attack chris. Just when that happens they escape by cutting away to someone else and then cutting back and they are out of the situation
I was a let down being that Resident Evil 1, 2 and Nemesis are my all time favorite video games from the 90’s. Anyway, a series is for sure the way to successfully make Resident Evil work!
They tell us why Leon is not a good cop. He failed out of the academy but his dad is a hot shot in the higher ups and got him a desk job in a shitty town. He was never supposed to be the hero in this story. I agree it’s totally wrong and backwards from what the game was going for, but they still made it clear.
I didn't expect much at all but I was hoping they would leaned into B horror movie cheese that the first game accomplished. Jeremy made a really good point about games of today scratching that itch of what we wanted back in the 90s. Oh well, anyways at least we got the amazingness that is Arcane. My easily among my favorite experiences of this year.
Being a Dota player, I did not consider watching Arcane since I am unfamiliar with the Champions and might miss a lot of the references. Now that Jeremy mentions it, I'll definitely watch it.
With how streaming is bigger than before, they really missed their chance to have this in a mini series. Especially the mansion part, couldve been a solid mini episodes and at the end of the season a little tease of RPD for a potential next season. But NOPE they instead cramped all 2 movies into 100 minutes.

At first, I thought this movie had bit of a chance. I was actually okay for the first twenty minutes. I even thought that combining the stories of the first two games might actually work at first. That all went downhill pretty quick. I'll give it credit that this movie was somewhat more faithful to the games than the Mila Jovovich movies, but only in a very superficial way. They toned down the action movie vibe and made it more of a horror movie, stuffed in as many game references as they could, and even tried to hit some of the story beats from the games, but in the end the casting was wrong, the story fell apart under the weight of trying to mix and adapt two games into one, and the characters were just shit. Addendum: God I hope they never try to make a Legacy of Kain movie. Those games are so dense and so well written that there is no chance in Hell a Hollywood studio wouldn't destroy it. At best, they would probably end up watering it down into a generic vampire movie. I don't even want to think about the worst case scenario.
I completely agree with you about legacy of kain. I would prefer a great looking CG movie and taking the video games script word for word, than giving some Hollywood script writer ANY chance at messing with it.
This review sounds just about how I figured this movie would be. I think what's upsetting is that this is the movie that fans have been asking for since that first horrible 2002 debacle, and they completely fucked it up. Thank you Jeremy. I had zero desire to see this movie and you have reaffirmed my decision.
I honestly didn't mind it. I respected their attempt to get somewhat closer to RE2. With the budget they had, I reckon they did pretty well. Except that god awful CGI monster at the end, that was horrendous. Instead of shitting on it and sequels getting cancelled... I reckon it has promise, so I'll support the sequel, and hope they get better.
Like at least they are trying. All I see are people being racist towards Leon's actor and thats not helping anyone. I had a fun time watching it and I've only played an hour of RE2, now I want to get back to the game thanks to how much fun Leon's character was in this movie. I mean so far in the game he's a pretty generic hero protagonist 🤷♂️

Arguably Wesker is the backbone villain of the entire series. And he just gets a pair of sunglasses and presumably goes mad after that? Leon is too painful to think about. Our Leon is out there somewhere else.
I feel like if you were trying to reboot the Resident Evil film franchise you should adapt resident evil 7. 1. It's a good jumping on point for those not familiar with the franchise. 2. The game was well received by fans 3. Probably an easier movie conceptually to make than the earlier entries. 4. Pretty iconic antagonists
Literally Hollywood gotta do their research on the story and characters. The whole film was a pile of bad writing, bad character development and just felt their weren’t much zombies….. like comparing to the old films of the Resident Evil. If they wanted to cramp in 2 games, they should've done it properly, and cramped 2 and 3 instead into a long movie, or make a series out of it including the spinoffs that occur at the same time of 2 and 3.

They literally could have done the first game in this run time. There's enough material to start at the mansion and end up in the laboratory with the Tyrant. Milla Jovovich movie made it work in a lab. Putting RE1 & 2 together in one movie was already a flag.

They only want your money, and only care about bringing in the dollars based on a popular and beloved franchise, even though RE has never really been known for having a great plot; it did always have characters who stood out, and were memorable, and relatable, and had campy dialogue and campy moments, but these movies that try to call themselves RE, were just crappy, instead of campy. The first one comes close to being a good movie, with Phyllis or Ally, or whatever her name was. It doesn't have any of the characters from the games in it, but the characters they did have weren't all boring and generic. And the atmosphere in that movie did have some legitimately scary moments, but while it ultimately fails as an RE movie, it almost worked, I guess?

As Arcane series showed us it’s pretty easy to make a good game adaptation, the tricky part is that you have to care about your product, not just about the cash.

Look at whether you're playing the 1998 original on the n64/ps1(yes, there were 2 different versions of RE2, on 2 different consoles, the n64 port was ironically the better port), or the RE2 Remake, where both Leon and Claire are given more character development, along with their partner characters, Sherry and Ada. Plus, Ada looks better in HD than she did back in 1998, no joke. But I agree, dude/lady. We don't need game movie adaptations. Especially if they're just lazier and dumbed down versions of the game's plots. And especially if the film's director is an ass who actually changed Leon's ethnicity ON purpose, to INTENTIONALLY piss people off, and intentionally made him incompetent, out of spite and hatred. No really, he legitimately ruined Leon's character from the games to make this pile of dogshit. He also made Claire a conspiracy theorist, even though she's never been like that in any RE game, at all. Also, this version of Claire looks like she's in her early 40's, when she's supposed to be a college age student(19), in RE2, looking for her older brother Chris, who was 25 when the original RE Mansion Incident happened. Wesker was 38, the same age as Barry Burton, Leon was 21, and had literally just joined the RPD because he was interested in the bizarre hunting incidents that were happening in Raccoon City, and had just graduated from the police academy. The reason he was late for his official first day was because he was partying in a motel the previous night, trying to get over the pain of having to break up with his girlfriend, and overslept the previous day. But if he hadn't done that, who knows? Maybe Leon would've been infected like the rest of the unlucky people in Raccoon City? But the backstory I just explained to you is verbatim from the RE Archive book I've owned since 2005, which goes through the first 4 RE games, and explains all the characters themselves who've shown up since RE0 to RE:CV. But at least it explains them well. This movie just looks and feels incompetent. Like a rookie on their first day, trying and failing to show that they're suitable for the job, only, this movie just f**ks around INTENTIONALLY, and although it adds some things from the first 2 RE games, there's no reason to watch this, when we have the Remakes of RE1 and 2. Which tell the stories that this movie attempts and fails at. Even the CGI RE movies are better movies, and the RE games do a much better job telling us who these characters are, their backgrounds, their birthdays, ages, personalities, even their middle names, like for example, Leon's middle name is Scott. And he's always protective of women, and has a thing for Ada Wong. Even in the remake. His look and even his name were both inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio. No joke. You see? That whole story I just told you about Leon Scott Kennedy, does more to explain who he is as a character and his personality is better explained, than some awful movie, directed by someone who I guarantee has never even TOUCHED a controller or played an RE game in their life, just saw dollar signs whenever they brought up the name to him. Sorry if I sound angrier than I intended, but I'm just somewhat passionate about this series, and Leon is my favorite RE character, and RE2 and it's remake, along with RE4 are my favorite RE games. Mainly because of Leon. But you're right. We thankfully live in a world where games give us the same experience we'd see in a movie, whether that's intended or not. Sorry also if this message is too long as well. But I do fully agree with you, and Jeremy. Plus, if anyone should be playing live action Leon S. Kennedy, It's Jeremy himself. My first thought when watching this movie that continued as it went on was “this is not how people talk.” It was obvious that the actors didn’t care and were just phoning it in which I can get with a script like this. The whole time everything just seemed like aliens wearing human skins and trying to act like humans. What they did to Leon’s character was a huge injustice and at one point I just burst out laughing at how terrible a scene was. It just felt so choppy and unnatural.

Just looked up the director of this film and he hasn't made a single decent film in his entire career. He mostly does low-budget horror films that have an IMDB rating in the range of 2.0 - 6.0. That should already give you an indication of how good this movie will be.

I agree, the part where Chris was fighting in the dark was very well done. It was very oppressive and you can almost feel the desperation of trying to survive. That was probably the only good scene and that's shame.

The first Resident Evil film with Milla Jovovich, despite not accurate to the videogames, was a solid zombiefilm with some great scares! They should've just focussed the first RE Remake film on the entire Mansion Incident and cast solid actors who can play the characters. You are so right! The first Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel are two great adaptations. From Dusk till Dawn and Planet Terror also proved that he could handle monster genre (with excellent B-movie flavour) really well. Rodriguez is also exceptional with a smal budget so he could really make this low budget picture look like a million bucks! Dammit, the man was born to make Resident Evil into a movie!

The most standout characters in RE series are actually Chris & Leon, then come Claire & Jill, then the rest. Chris or/& Leon are in almost every RE popular (main) games. It's downright frustrating the movie butchered both characters massively.

Hopefully they do the characters justice. The premises of the movie would make sense as your in the city at the same time but from different parts of the city. It only makes sense to do it in 1 movie where it swings from 1 team to another. Just my opinion though

This one image pretty much sums up my impressions of how Johannes Roberts approached making this adaptation.
In one recently released interview clip, Roberts admitted that he went back and forth between including a Tyrant in the film. But then he chose not to, claiming he could not make it “tonally fit”? Roberts went on to say that he decided to have an Easter egg in place of that, where viewers can see a severed Tyrant’s head in the background of Birkin’s lab. Yet, he also admits that he could not shoot the scene, in a way that made his intended Easter egg easily visible.
So in other words, an essential part of the source material’s story, characters, and world-building, which many fans want to see in its full glory, gets decapitated and turned into glorified superficial set-dressing. And it is not even something you can easily spot, without working hard to look for it. I think that seems to be a perfect visual analogy for the rest of the film’s approach to adapting Resident Evil.

I feel that a resident evil tv series or an actual streaming series would be much better. You can take your time w/character development and story that films sometimes can’t really do in 2 hours.
I would say yes but after seeing what we're gonna get for the Netflix live action series it seems like no one knows how to properly adapt resident evil into film or television
even Dragon Ball in animated films manages to make a whole arc of a completely new story in less than 2 hours, because when they decide to make films of works like this in live action, they always have to start from a premise of trying to retell the story from the beginning, from a form all twisted or with characters miserably uncharacterized?

I've never played League of Legends in my life, I was never interested in it... Arcane, however, is one of the best animated series I've ever seen in my entire life. It's visually perfect, the story is captivating, the voice actors are perfect, to me it's an instant classic.

yeah I was told by a co-worker about Arcane and as a person who have played LoL quite a lot I got turned off so to speak by how the series/movie is done. But maybe ill give it a shot
@@likemysnopp It is phenomenal. I admittedly don't care about the game, was never my cup of tea, but the show on it's own is incredible. I'm heavily biased because I'm an animator by trade, and an animated show of this caliber just doesn't come around often. I highly recommend watching it.

Many people don’t understand how deep resident evils gameplay actually is and what made it successful, the original trilogy is based on a chess system, each cog affects a whole wheel of effects. Also look at the documents and the lore. Or atleast resident evil 1 remake, original 2 and original 3, not to mention resident evil 4

Yeah, my main issue is none of the remake stuff should be in the film at all - the originals were the essential - unless you’re going to give us zombies and disaster like that why bother? Eh, capcom doesn’t know what to do to make this stuff good. They should sell the movie rights to people who give a shit.
In my opinion of what to make it works is: just make it like suspense horror movie (28 Days Later), where the protagonist struggle to find a way out.. and it should be a slow pacing film, minimum action, right amounts of jumpscares, feels of isolations, and good actings… neverminds the right or not of how Leon looks is.

Hey, It's ok, dude/lady, I would've cried too, and I'll cry with you if nobody else will. Because Leon Scott Kennedy is my favorite RE character, and has been since his first appearance in RE2(the original, not just the remake, although that is great too). Leon is the perfect RE protagonist, and just kept getting cooler and better with each game. Even RE6(even if you, like the majority of the world, hate 6, at least Leon looked cool in that game, still had the cool jacket, cool hair style, and cool voice and personality, and best story in 6). And when I literally sat down for 5 minutes to see the awful, cheaply produced, direct-to-DVD style editing of the trailer, I knew it would be a crapfest of a movie. I knew it would suck. It's not that hard to see, but still. I was a bit hyped up, hoping they'd fix some of these errors before launch, but down in my heart, my gut, I knew that they wouldn't, and that this movie was going to straight up SUCK some serious s**t. Seriously, as a longtime and hardcore fan of this series, ever since the original RE 2 on the n64, playing it as a kid, with my dad, it was the first horror game I'd ever played. Something about the box art just made me want to play it. I loved every second of it. Plus, seeing how cool and brave Leon was, was something I wanted to be like. Also, the reason he was late to his first day of work on September 29th, was the fact that he'd been partying the previous day, in a motel, trying to get over the pain of breaking up with his girlfriend, and overslept. That's legitimately his reason for being late. Taken straight from the RE Archive book I've owned since 2005. But it also states that that mistake might've saved his life from being a zombie. He also didn't leave for work until sunset as well. He was only 21 at the time of the Raccoon City Incident. How hard is it to properly adapt Leon Scott Kennedy's character from game to movies correctly? Paul W.S. Anderson failed at this, and now whoever the director/producer/writer/actors, shoot, you can even add the craft services of this crapshoot to the list as well. Paul Anderson did get Leon's look right in his crap movies, and the hairstyle, but got his personality wrong, because he literally swapped it with another character, for seemingly no reason. Why can't they adapt Leon's character correctly in a movie? It's not impossible to do. Guess only the games know how to do it right. As usual, Jeremy's right. The RE2 remake, original, and definitely RE4 and 6 gave us the true portrayal of Leon we all THOUGHT we needed to look for, high and low, when the REAL answer to how we could find a seriously awesome portrayal of Leon Kennedy was right in front of us the whole frigging time. Especially if you've ever played RE4. Sorry if this is a bit too long of a message. I just really enjoy RE and it's my favorite horror game series, and Leon is my favorite RE character.

Resident evil was amazing back when it came out on playstation 1 all those years ago because there wasn't any other zombie game, people had never seen anything like it before. Now everyone has seen this, just like Jurassic Park, dinosaurs is like whatever now. They need a new direction, like a really good story.

Ya know as someone who hadn't played the games...I actually enjoyed the movie 😅. Like everything with the mansion I wasn't really engaged with, but the build up to the outbreak, seeing the sick towns people and just waiting for that ball to drop with dread (basically what I understand to be the Resident Evil 2 part of the movie) I dug.
Oh and Leon. My friends (have played the game) and I enjoyed his character in this film. We were laughing at how inept he was. Disservice to the character? Maybe. But it was damn entertaining.
If this was the Resident evil we got way back when, I think I would have really liked it. I stopped watching the "Alice" edition 2 min into whichever one they forgot that they ended the previous one with Ada and company standing on the White house.... It really just felt like a huge rug pull.
There was only one more movie after that one tho. You basically watched the whole series 😅

I believe EVERY SINGLE one of those movies except the second one starts by undoing whatever the previous one said the next one would be about ("We're going to expose Umbrella" -> zombie apocalypse instead. Alice clone army -> all immediately killed. Established safe haven on a ship -> immediately destroy it. Prepare for ultimate battle for the White House -> start after it's over.) What's even more baffling is that they were all made by THE SAME GUY. It wasn't a ton of creators fighting over control - it was one director who can't ever make up his mind or plan ahead.

I think Brett Dalton would make a good Albert Wesker. He basically played the later version of Wesker in Agents of SHIELD season 3. He’s a tall guy in a trench coat with a mostly monotone voice who has an intense personality and fighting abilities, who also mutates to some degree by the end of the season. To me he‘s be perfect.
With rumors of a Mass Effect show, I think he'd be a good Commander Shepherd.

The first 2 Resident Evil games are really easy and really good to make suspensive movies about. You can make such a good zombie horror movie about the first game specifically. I don’t understand why Hollywood has such a stupid amount of trouble with this.
Unfortunately, video game movies and horror movies are two genres that Hollywood knows they can put no effort in, and still make a quick buck. In theory, a good Resident Evil movie could be made, but Hollywood will never be able to resist going for a soulless cash grab instead.
Though the WS movies were…definitely something, it did had it moments here and there and tried something different with the Alice character and such.
For all we can blame those movies for doing wrong, they are at least memorable. This movie will be forgotten as soon as you finish watching it.

The characters are among the worst part of this movie. However I thought they portrayed Chief Irons fairly well along with Chris, who was hilariously bland and clueless exactly how he was in RE1 and RE1 Remake. Idk if that was intentional or just bad writing but they nailed him lmao
@My names Jeff very true, I’m very open minded and can enjoy things that aren’t true to the canon/lore but for me the characters have to somewhat resemble the source material. Leon was heavily exaggerated on the rookie part. Claire was spot on. Jill was too cocky and arrogant. Wesker was an entirely different person altogether. Birkin was mehhh. I wish they had Barry, Rebecca, and Mr X but I think it was already too bloated of a cast as it is.

I was a huge RE fan when I was young. I was SO hyped for the original RE movie when it came out, and I ended up being really disappointed at the matrix-style action movie we were all given. I liked the RE games because they were horror games, and what I saw in theatres years ago was decidedly not a horror movie. I was pretty disappointed. I watched this film last night. It's like most video game movies: the acting isn't the best, it seems to have been done on a pretty low budget, the pacing and dialogue are odd. Pretty standard for a movie based on a video game. What I DID enjoy was that this film mirrored what I had imagined a RE movie looking like back in the day, before Paul W.S. Anderson got ahold of the IP. Will I watch it again? Probably not. But I appreciate that the filmmakers wanted to make something a little closer to the source material. I don't regret seeing it.

My favorite parts of the movie were when the main characters would get swarmed by zombies and need to find a way out or in an impossible situation or "mr x"(scientist who i can't membah) has to get past everybody in order to attack chris. Just when that happens they escape by cutting away to someone else and then cutting back and they are out of the situation
I was a let down being that Resident Evil 1, 2 and Nemesis are my all time favorite video games from the 90’s. Anyway, a series is for sure the way to successfully make Resident Evil work!

They tell us why Leon is not a good cop. He failed out of the academy but his dad is a hot shot in the higher ups and got him a desk job in a shitty town. He was never supposed to be the hero in this story. I agree it’s totally wrong and backwards from what the game was going for, but they still made it clear.
I didn't expect much at all but I was hoping they would leaned into B horror movie cheese that the first game accomplished. Jeremy made a really good point about games of today scratching that itch of what we wanted back in the 90s.
Oh well, anyways at least we got the amazingness that is Arcane. My easily among my favorite experiences of this year.
Being a Dota player, I did not consider watching Arcane since I am unfamiliar with the Champions and might miss a lot of the references. Now that Jeremy mentions it, I'll definitely watch it.

With how streaming is bigger than before, they really missed their chance to have this in a mini series.
Especially the mansion part, couldve been a solid mini episodes and at the end of the season a little tease of RPD for a potential next season.
But NOPE they instead cramped all 2 movies into 100 minutes.

At first, I thought this movie had bit of a chance. I was actually okay for the first twenty minutes. I even thought that combining the stories of the first two games might actually work at first. That all went downhill pretty quick. I'll give it credit that this movie was somewhat more faithful to the games than the Mila Jovovich movies, but only in a very superficial way. They toned down the action movie vibe and made it more of a horror movie, stuffed in as many game references as they could, and even tried to hit some of the story beats from the games, but in the end the casting was wrong, the story fell apart under the weight of trying to mix and adapt two games into one, and the characters were just shit.
Addendum: God I hope they never try to make a Legacy of Kain movie. Those games are so dense and so well written that there is no chance in Hell a Hollywood studio wouldn't destroy it. At best, they would probably end up watering it down into a generic vampire movie. I don't even want to think about the worst case scenario.
I completely agree with you about legacy of kain. I would prefer a great looking CG movie and taking the video games script word for word, than giving some Hollywood script writer ANY chance at messing with it.
This review sounds just about how I figured this movie would be. I think what's upsetting is that this is the movie that fans have been asking for since that first horrible 2002 debacle, and they completely fucked it up. Thank you Jeremy. I had zero desire to see this movie and you have reaffirmed my decision.

I respected their attempt to get somewhat closer to RE2. With the budget they had, I reckon they did pretty well. Except that god awful CGI monster at the end, that was horrendous.
Instead of shitting on it and sequels getting cancelled... I reckon it has promise, so I'll support the sequel, and hope they get better.
Like at least they are trying. All I see are people being racist towards Leon's actor and thats not helping anyone. I had a fun time watching it and I've only played an hour of RE2, now I want to get back to the game thanks to how much fun Leon's character was in this movie. I mean so far in the game he's a pretty generic hero protagonist 🤷♂️

I've heard the upcoming Resident Evil series/film to be released is casting Lance Reddick (a black man) as Albert Wesker (a white character) Don't you see how this makes ZERO sense and isn't faithful to the original character? Like if Sergeant Johnson from Halo was played by a white actor - I'd absolutely have an issue with that.

Some people tried to argue the games are too short to make one movie. I'm like did you beat the game in 1.5-2 hrs? No didn't think so. It can be done easily.
Val Kilmer would have made a perfect Wesker. Whoever this sympathetic frat boy is is somebody else along with whatever the fuck that guy claiming to be Leon Kennedy is. Arguably Wesker is the backbone villain of the entire series. And he just gets a pair of sunglasses and presumably goes mad after that? Leon is too painful to think about. Our Leon is out there somewhere else.
What's a shame is the guy who played Leon would've been a great choice for Carlos! Awful, nonsensical casting decisions. 😩

I feel like if you were trying to reboot the Resident Evil film franchise you should adapt resident evil 7.
1. It's a good jumping on point for those not familiar with the franchise.
2. The game was well received by fans
3. Probably an easier movie conceptually to make than the earlier entries.
4. Pretty iconic antagonists
It'd have to be first person since they won't show Ethan's face (even though everyone knows what he looks like)

Literally Hollywood gotta do their research on the story and characters. The whole film was a pile of bad writing, bad character development and just felt their weren’t much zombies….. like comparing to the old films of the Resident Evil. Like this film wasn’t dark enough at all. Even adding Ada Wong in the end credits was random. Idk it’s was odd one for the reboot and my buddies were like “wtf was that?“ lol

It isn't that complicated.
If they wanted to cramp in 2 games, they should've done it properly, and cramped 2 and 3 instead into a long movie, or make a series out of it including the spinoffs that occur at the same time of 2 and 3.
@@GH90-_ True. 2 and 3 are close enough where you can weave them together. 1 has plenty to fill a single film and if you have decent actors the audience can really have fun with the characters.
