Bob Havens was Al Hirt's trombone player for a number of years beginning in the in the mid-50s at Dan's Pier 600 in the New Orleans French Quarter. His wife, Jo, worked there with him as a cocktail waitress. I was a student at Tulane and went there often.
Had the pleasure of playing aa few dance band gigs with him in NC when he "retired". He came in one night complaining of how "out of shape" he was, and then he tore it up for three hours!
I remember as a little kid growing up watching Lawrence Welk with my parents and grandma. I knew even then that these folks were all exceptional musicians and performers❤🎼🎶🎵🎺
Perfect trio !!!!!! 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎵🎵🎶🎵♥️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Plus the piano of course, and the happy dancing of the Lawrence Welk family, what a wonderful time with a wonderful sound and scene ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎶🎵🎶🎵♥️!!!!!!!!
I have a 78 RPM record from 1928 ("Spiked Beer") of the Welk band when it was still a small jazz outfit - rather like this section of the later big band!
I wouldn't call him "better" but he was more technical. There are plenty of trombonists who are even more technical than Havens though. By the way, the clarinettist here is Henry Questa who was with Jack Teagarden for several years.

I love this stuff!! Pure musical genius!!
What year/season? Thanks.
Bob Havens was in my opinion better than his idol Jack Teagarden. Just phenomenal.

Havens was a great player, but better than Teagarden? No, Teagarden was a better blues player and a trombonist of great subtlety and taste.
@@johntapscott4528 indeed, and Havens would have been the first to say that.
Katherine Needleman wants to know why there's no broads in the band.
