WARNING to Artists Who Sell on Saatchi Art | People Can Easily Download & Steal Your Images

  • This video is a warning to artists who sell on Saatchi Art! I show exactly how large image files of your original art can be stolen off of Saatchi Art. I discovered this after having several my artworks illegally downloaded and stolen off of somewhere online (I can't prove it was stolen off of Saatchi, but much of the evidence supports my thinking that it probably was). Regardless, as of the making of this video (July 2020), people can easily download and steal the artwork you upload onto their site. I'm hoping Saatchi will fix this problem, if they do I'll post a follow up video to let everyone know it is safe to sell on. Please share with artists you know who use Saatchi to sell art!

    Saatchi doesn't really want to protect artists. If they really want to protect artist, they can add an outline pattern watermark to the fullscreen image. I assure you that this kind of watermark WORKS. Look, I'm a professional designer and tried everything to protect my work. And if you set an outlined soft text (as a pattern) above the image, it's almost impossible to remove the watermark, because it can take many days and hours to remove it, and for sure, it will look awfull at the end.
    Or, they can show only a portion of the art in full screen, so the user can see the "quality", but not the whole file.

    I understand your frustration as I am retired and beside selling my art works, prints etc...I was a teacher. Buying a small print is cheap and with a quality scanner, photoshop and a fine art printer you can produce hundreds of different size copies of your artwork AROUND the world. I have taken legal action and NEVER loss, but it cost time and money to take such action. I have chased down such crooks for artist friends from my home in the USA to Australia where I now live. Also, if it's on the web it's out there...a fact of life. Since I don't need the funds, I don't sell on the web. Only through local shows and businesses. I sold that way before the internet and made a living. At your age, I'm pretty sure you have no idea of selling without the net...you can. Saatchi Art is really no different than many other sites.

    It's not just Saatchi. Fine Art America has the same problem. But I had a person from Nigeria buy one of my prints at 8x10 and offer copies of it on their website. All they had to do was scan it. The 8x10 wasn't that expensive. They even grabbed my logo to make it look like we were collaborating! I wrote a letter of Cease of Desist and, last I looked, their website was down. There really is no good way to keep people from stealing our art from the internet. :(

    Thank you for this information. I am an artist using Saatchi Art and I can't say I'm too happy about it at the moment. On all of my paintings, when clicking on the 'Fullscreen' mode, I notice the image is not as sharp as it was when originally uploaded, in other words it is slightly blurred. Others artists work appear fine but mine are not. I have emailed them about this and it appears on 2 occasions that they have no idea what I'm talking about. My last email included 2 screenshots showing the sharp image I uploaded and also the blurred image after publication as proof. As yet, I've had no further response and they are not the quickest to reply. This problem will affect my sales if continued as customers will think all my work is blurred.

      Thanks for watching! Hope it was helpful. I think it's crazy that they still are doing this, not protecting artist work. Especially considering this has been going on for years. You would think Saatchi would care more about their artists...

      @@NeuroSoup yes. You would think that Saatchi would invest into protecting our work. It's hard enough to be an artist, without having the extra work of having to file Cease and Resist DMCA takedown notices. Oh, with the work so poorly protected AI probably scapes the Saatchi archive to feed it's image generation capacities. (uff I only this second thought about that!)
      Thank you again. I stayed up 2 hours last night to delete half of my works from Saatchi and update what I left on there. I will probably delete everything soon but I wanted to have a couple of days to think about it.

    Thanks, I will never go back to Saatchi....better to have your own site, fully protected, watermarked etc and send links to anyone interested if you have the time to do the marketing....there are so many online art sites asking for joining/competition fees now. I hate them for living off our backs like fleas..... I think Saatchi has a good reputation but it's about time artists got together with web techs to create a better, fairer site.

  • @Leto2ndAtreides
    @Leto2ndAtreides 3 года назад +2

    I understand your pain. Although, there's not much that can really be done on the net to stop images from being saved. Even watermarks can be removed if someone's really interested.
    I imagine that the person who stole your prints just went to saatchi because they are a well reputed place. But they could likely have found images to download elsewhere also.
    Essentially, you have legal rights to your paintings, and if someone steals them you could potentially sue. But in reality... There's often not much you can do.
    It's like people streaming movies - took millions to make, downloaded in 5 min.
    Sometimes it's just better to focus on making your own customers happy and ignore what other people are doing... Just pisses you off.

    Thank you for sharing this. While steeling art can happen on any site I've been concerned about Saatchi for this very reason, the required file size is large. I just sold a painting on the site and was considering uploading more. I'm very hesitant to do so. It's surprising an artistic site won't allow smaller images for thumbnail images for original painting sales as this absolutely encourages easy theft.

    Thank you for this info! I am concerned, as I have a lot of paintings downloaded on Saatchi. I had a piece stolen from me on Etsy, where a painter just copied my work, just changing the background. I know that some companies in China steal images of artwork and print them on mugs and pillows and God knows what else... Frustrating... But what can one do? Do you have any suggestions?

    • @NeuroSoup
      @NeuroSoup  3 года назад +3

      I keep my image sizes small and put a watermark on every image I share online. People can still edit the watermark out but it makes it harder for them to steal your images.
      As for people making work that looks like yours as in painters who copy, there's not an easy way to stop them. You could always sue them for copyright infringement but lawyers are expensive...you might just reach out to the person who copied and tell them how it is hurting your income since they stole your idea and maybe they will take it down. You can also submit a copyright claim to etsy and report them. If Etsy deems it to be theft of your copyrighted image, they will take it down and maybe shut down their shop.

    I'm very unhappy with Saatchi right now...I sold one of my paintings, an oil, (small thankfully) on Saatchi...I packed it up per their requirements..and shipped it to the buyer as instructed to the address that was on the shipping label that Saatchi sent me. Two weeks later I checked back to get paid for the piece however after almost 2 months I have yet to be paid for the painting. Before shipping the painting I made a copy (screenshot) of the shipping label and kept copies of all supporting documents so that I have been able to track the shipment and arrival of the painting. It was delivered to the address on the label (which later I found out was a CVS store)...and the painting sat there for weeks waiting for the buyer to come pick it up. She never did and then the painting was shipped to Saatchi in California. (I was told by a Saatchi rep that they had it shipped to them so that they could reship it to the buyer). Now they're looking for it! They still haven't paid me...and they have not shipped it to the buyer...so in short, I did the work, I shipped the work per their instructions and it is somewhere at their offices in California? I still have not been able to be paid. The people that I have contacted about this issue keep saying "Thank you for your patience." Well, I am no longer patient. Today, I removed many of my paintings from their site. I hate to get off entirely from Saatchi because I have sold several paintings through them and had one nice commission but this experience has really tainted my view of Saatchi Art. I will add that they always before had been very good about the process and I have been paid on time in the past...however, I feel like I should not be penalized because of their mistakes and if they have pocketed the proceeds from my painting why have I not been paid?? Tomorrow I will be calling them again. I feel this is not my fault and if they cannot produce my work and ship it back to me, then I will have an attorney get involved I suppose. My nephew is a copyright attorney so I will be contacting him first. I have several clients that are attorneys that I feel would help me out if needed...not sure yet. I don't want to taint their name but I want to warn other artists...be careful. Make copies of all documents including checking on the shipment of your pieces. This comment is left to simply tell artists to be aware and document your sales and your save your documentation. I even have photos of my packing processes because they have very specific instructions on the packing of the paintings...so I am so glad I always do this before shipping a piece.

    The fact that she posted three images on Saatchi for sale, and then forgot about them, due to no sales, until someone allegedly scammed them from Saatchi for their own profit, tells you a lot about how hard it is for an artist to profit from their art in this era. Most everything is a scam or a waste of time.

    Right click to save an image full size still works. You just have to be persistent clicking. I have never made a sale on Saatchi art, well yet I hope, but I did have an image (a photograph) sold on Shutterstock for 30 cents that I found Wall mart was selling as prints in various sizes, up to 100 dollars each!!! It's really hard these days for visual artists to make money online selling their art, unless you're established artist that sells for thousands of dollars a piece.

      If it's stressful, when you sell unlimited prints of your work and realize that the full screen preview is very sharp and easy to copy and print at home or store. Just wonder who's going to buy an 8 x 10 print when the preview gives you a sharp image up to 20 inches wide for free. Just copy it into two or four pieces, join it in photoshop, save it to a flash and run to Staples to print it...
