@@carlcolvin8320 9 months in and zero problems. Good luck with your install! If nothing else you will probably need the fuse taps above. Appreciate you using my associate link. Doesn't cost you anymore but sends me a very small commission to help support this channel.
Finished my dash cam install yesterday. Put a VIOFO A139 2 channel into a 2023 Subaru Forester Touring. The absolute hardest part was getting the fuse tap into the fuse slot. That took 2 hours. I guess it just took the right amount of brut force. I was worried I was going to break the whole fuse panel. I had the exact same P9 panel in your video and used the same empty slot you did. Everything else went very smoothly in large part because of your video. I think the rest took 1 hour. I did a rear cam and a Powercell 8 instead of drawing from the car battery for parking mode. Thanks so much for taking the time and for saving me likely hours of time trying to figure things out. Oh...also did the same A-Pillar tie down you did just to not mess with that airbag.

Took me 7 seconds. The hardest part was extracting those damn small fuses. There's a white plastic fuse puller in the engine compartment fuse panel which made it take about a minute.
Very helpful and detailed video. I appreciate you taking the time to go over little things like where the clips are and where to route the wire into the fuse box.
This is the most detailed instructions I’ve seen. I’m installing a dashcam on my 2018 Forester and I’ll use your video as my guide. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. A like & subscribe is the least I could do for you sharing it.😊
Hell…this is great. We have a new Forester on order and I will be taking the dash cam out the outback that it is replacing and putting it in there. I currently just run the cable to the back of the car to the 12v outlet there…on our crosstrek too. Maybe I will do this with the forester…Great DIY. I will put a link to you video in the forester forum.
Thanks for the very detail installation instructions. I like that each step is illustrated in detail. This is extremely important for newbie like me as seeing them done slowly helps improving my confidence. I wish your video also shows how to run the wiring for a rear camera too.
@@californiahikebike I have just finished installing the front and back cameras. Fyi, having a fishing cable will help a lot when installing the back camera, specifically when threading the wire through the hatch weather grommet.
The "load" side is the side with the wire (that goes to your load) the hot/feed side is the one opposite the wire that needs to go to power from the car. Nice video though!
I may have used the wrong terminology but I'll stand by what I meant as far as what side goes where. The hot side coming into the fuse tap needs to be away from the wire as shown in the video but I understand what you are saying as well. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! For those interested I just found this video which explains this subject in depth. ruclips.net/video/nasuPwpr55I/видео.html
When you disconnect the negative battery terminal, securely place something non-conductive over it; I modified a beer cozy to do this. Leaving the negative cable loose under the hood as you're moving around inside the car means it's free to move about and touch something metal, thus grounding the DC circuit and defeating the purpose of disconnecting it.
You're welcome! Don't forget the link to the hardwire kit in the description if you don't have it already. Helps to support my work on this channel!

"Load" is being confused with hot. Fuses themselves don't have electrical polarity, but may have mechanical polarity. Fuse taps have polarity to either daisy chain from or to daisy chain from the existing hot side. If wired incorrectly, the existing fuse will be in series with the addon fuse. When wired correctly, both fuses will share a common hot side. It's also imperative to check the voltage on the hot side to be sure it matches the expected input range of the DC buck converter (to USB usually) supplied in the hardwired kit.
The way to do this for parking coverage is to use a fused circuit that's powered with the ignition off, but ideally to also install a toggle switch on the positive side between the fuse and the device. That way, you can choose to de-power the dash cam when it's not needed, such as when you park in your own garage. If possible, install the toggle switch next to your start button so it's easy to just click on or off as needed as you start and stop the engine.
For those that want that functionality good advice. I like to keep it simple. The one time I forget to flip the toggle is the one time Murphy's law kicks in! Lol
@@californiahikebike It can happen, but you quickly find yourself trained. At first, I have revisited my parked car a few times to make sure I left the switch in the right position.

What fuses would you recommend tapping in for a hardwire always ON dash cam with a rearview camera??? I have a 2023 Subaru Forester wilderness. I would greatly appreciate all in any recommendations, Thank you.
As I don't own my Subie any more I would have to research that. Check the cam manufacturer's instructions to determine what amp fuse to use. Then determine which one stays on for that amperage.....
Can we connect the Dashcam wires to the wires in the celling panel you opened? Having said that we need to use a extension plug so we dont need to run the wires all the way down to the 12V socket. What do you think?
One concern not discussed is the effect of disconnecting the battery on the car's electronics. Will the settings all return to the factory default or land somewhere in limbo or not be affected at all?
Great video! Thanks so much! Question. Can you route the wire above the air bag and then down the molding the rest of the way? Maybe route it under the top of the air bag if you can't get it entirely above the mechanism? It might be easier than removing the whole panel.
I have a 2021 forester premium. My console is set up a little different from yours. I’m nervous about messing with the eyesight since mine is all one piece. Do you have any advice for how I should do mine?

I was going to place my cam in the same position that you did but looking at the owner manual again, Subaru suggests that nothing is placed there due to the EyeSight cameras. Have you found any issues with that placement? Thanks much!
With this model year the eyesight cams are enclosed all the way to the windshield. It didn't make sense to me and I assumed it was leftover from the previous year's manual. I never had any problem at all.
New forester arrived and I’m ready to start this. The fuses in the car are low profile mini fuses but for your tap you used a mini…not low profile? I was not sure on that. I’m using a thinkware camera so I will need two fuse taps.
Not at all. The eyesight is flush with the windshield and there is no interference. That said, I had the exact same setup in my 2018 Forester which was not flush with the windshield with the eyesight system and there was zero interference as well.
Incredible video, thank you. Clear, thorough, and on point. Couple of questions. If I am just routing wire for 12V instead of hardwiring, is there any issue with wire resting up against airbag area? Second question is do I need to disconnect the battery terminal just to shove the wire behind the A-pillar using the spatula tool that comes with dashcams?
I'm notca mechanic but always practice safety. I recommend staying clear of the airbag. Why take any chances? Same principal with battery disconnect. Safety first.... good luck!
That would be pretty easy. Just find a fuse in the panel that's always hot. But if you travel by air and leave your car at the airport like me, it could be a dead battery problem depending on how long you are gone.
