i'm so in awe with figure skating too! but i could never do it myself i think as the guy said i think i'm over the hill too haha for a few years now ive been following the work of yuzuru hanyu and in my opinion he's literally the best and especially the most artistic skater out there and still he stayed so humble. and his performances are just literal art! if you haven't seen it please do! i hope you will be as fascinated by his way of skating and performing as i am :) his 2018 pyeongchang free skate omg! but anyways i've recently decided to start ballet again after stopping for about 7 years and i think some part in that decision is your work and the last ballet video and the nutcracker videos you did :)

Hey, figure skater here. Crossovers, spins and t-stop on your first lesson is amazing, usually people work on those after a few months! I used to have a problem with spotting too (I took dance before I learned to spin in skating).
One thing my skating coach taught me that helped was to look in the direction your spinning. Assuming you prefer spinning counter-clockwise (most right-handed people do) try to think about constantly looking to the left. Since you're spinning to the left, looking to that direction will keep your head centered. If you spin clockwise, just look over your right side instead. Sorry if that's confusing, it's hard to explain movement through text lol.
Also I'm sorry about those gross men. People sexualizing sports like skating and gymnastics is a huge problem and it sucks.
But hopefully you try skating again! You did great!

I wish I could have someone teaching me along the way too instead of me learning by myself because I feel like it’d make things so much easier and they can tell me what I’m doing right or wrong

  • @eljj7968

As a figure skater I was so excited when this popped up! (Have been watching your channel for years). I also do a bit of coaching, and you did great for your first lesson! Would recommend in the future just wearing normal leggings, not those flared pants, as your blades can get caught in them. Most teens and adults just wear regular leggings, some of the little kids wear colourful pants. The Lululemon zip up jackets you mentioned at the start are great too, or a vest. F**k those guys, that's so gross, your body was completely covered, and even if It wasn't that's disgusting to hear them talking like that. People at my rink literally skate in crop tops/bra tops. Now I'm paranoid there are creepy men watching :/ Anyway, keep at it, don't worry about random strangers! Hope you get your own skates soon (make sure you get ones that are the right level and fit for your feet - get fitted professionally, I'm sure your coach will know where to go). Look forward to seeing more skating videos!

Hi! I'm Ellie: an adult figure skater in college (also, ex-ballerina) with some tips, tricks, and brands! So over the years I've skated (8-10 years), the most important tip is to stay inspired. It can be so frustrating when you're stuck on a move for a long time, but it is totally normal! I combat that by filling my social media with other adult skaters near my level and slightly above my level so I can watch other people working on the same things as me and celebrate their successes with them. That keeps me wanting to achieve and grow with my fellow skaters. A trick (since I also used to struggle with trying to spot during spins), is to figure out where your eyeline is and trace is while you spin. For me, I try to keep my eyes on the middle section of bleachers as opposed to a single spot in the room. That helped me a ton during spins and now I don't feel the need to spot anymore. Another tip/trick is to stretch before you skate, which I'm sure you know as a dancer. Focus on hips, hamstrings, back, and shoulders. Lastly, clothing and brands! I try to remember to try and wear what I'm comfy in (although it is so hard to with men like that). If you wear something else to please others in anyway, you end up focusing on your outfit too much when you deserve to be focusing on your activity. Personally, I wear leggings for my bottoms (usually not a flare as those can hold water more around the ankle if you fall). My favorite type are the hugger line from Aerie- they don't get gross if you fall, the compression is perfect, and I love the pockets so I can put my gloves in them. For tops, sometimes I throw on a baggy t-shirt, but other days I love the lululemon swiftly tech long sleeves or align tanks if I'm feeling like I want a lighter top. You were also 100% right with the lulu jackets, I recently got a define luon jacket and it is AMAZING- 10/10 worth the price. Other little things to wear- pantyhose socks when you have legit skates make an incredible different (cheap ones or the mondor/edea skate socks work. floquiya if you want them a bit thicker and warmer); cheap gloves from target (get a few pairs and shove them into your skate bag); mondor tights if you choose to wear shorts/skirt and tights; any good sports bra is a great asset for jumping so you aren't... sore later lol; Rockerz skate guards are my fave hard guards and Chloe Noel have fun soaker guards (don't forget to dry your blades and put soakers on after!). Of course you'll need some good skates too so make sure you go to a reputable skate shop and get fit- just like pointe shoes, different types of feet work in different skates/blades. I personally have skated in Jackson skates and now Edea skates, but don't work well in Reidell. They even have skate brands (like aura) that take a scan of your foot and custom make your boot! Definetly talk to your skate shop about what you're skill level is and what your goals are as each boot works best for different things (such as single vs double jumps or freestyle vs ice dance). My last brand/clothing tip is something I feel like you'd find fun- in the 2000s-2010s, there was this brand of skating pants by Choe Noel that have a spiral pattern down one leg... something tells me you'd love those!
I hope this all helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to dm me on my skating insta @skating.ellie! I feel like my history with ballet is a great asset for my skating, so I'm sure you're going to do well. Have fun skating

I hope you're still skating and that those men did not put you off the sport forever. Skaters tend to wear tightly fitted clothing (men and women!) because anything too baggy distorts body lines and can get snagged on toe picks. You're not the only one dressing this way is what I'm trying to say (sometimes I just skate in a sports bra!). Regardless of if you plan on sharing it, I hope you're still on your skating journey because it is such a gratifying thing to come to as an adult.

that sucks. most skaters at my rinks, even men are so nice and supportive towards new skaters and it makes me happy. no man should ever EVER do that. i also wanted to say even if someone is doing that or saying stuff, to go back like you normally would and show them (if they are there) that you don’t care and you are just trying to skate. i know it will be hard but do it to show them that you don’t care what they are saying. hope you get better ❤

I'm a figure skater and I'm impressed with your spins! They're not easy at first. You can tell you're a ballerina :) I hope you keep skating, ballet and figure skating really go hand in hand when it comes to skate programs, so much elegance.
If you have the flexibility, you should be able to do a layback spin with some time, it's not as hard as it looks (at least I think! It is kinda scary at first, but practice on the barrier and slowly gain confidence)
This was a cool video to watch! Those guys towards the end though, ew, I've had some really strange encounters with men like that at the ice rink as well, not cool.

I feel like Man #2 was not comfortable with Man #1. Gotta differentiate. He said more than once, "I'm not looking. I assume everyone that is here is too young" and didn't validate anything Man #1 said. Seemed like Man #2 was a good guy.

  • @christinamacgregor1045
    @christinamacgregor1045 2 года назад +2

If you listen to the conversation, man 1 is def worse than man 2. Every time he makes a bad comment man 2 chuckles nervously, like he doesn't really agree with what is being said but isn't saying anything. That is why toxic masculinity continues, man. When a man speaks up and says awful thoughts like these, you gotta either walk away, or combat his thoughts so he knows he is wrong. Man 2 tried weakly with, "I am trying not to look because I figure they are too young." It was his round about way of saying he didn't want the conversation. He needed to be more bold and say, "this conversation makes me uncomfortable," or just walk away or SOMETHING. I can work on this too. I have been in many uncomfortable conversations that wouldn't have happened if I asked the other person to stop them before they happened. 😞

As a ballerina who has in past 6 years got really into figure skating and ice dance, my best advise particularly with spins is try to get out of habit of turning out your standing leg and keep your knee soft, not super pulled up! This will massively aid you in keeping your spins centred and feeling more secure. It took me 4 years to work this one out and was like a magic switch went off when I gave both of these a go in combination!!

this is a list of the moves Luna did (that i could tell clearly what it was):
7:16 stroking, basic move first thing every skater learns
7:51 foward crossovers, another basic move we learn in basic 3&4
7:58 T-stop idk why her coach was teaching her that because you dont learn it till basic 5&6 the first stop you should learn is snowplow
8:24 swizzles! my teacher used to make is do these while doing dips (when you sort of sit while gliding, except we had to have our butt touching the back of the skate so it was hard, she called them "owie swizzles")
9:38 that is a snail entrance into a two foot spin which is also kinda something you dont learn till 3&4
10:09 one foot spin idk how she entered because i didnt see (you dont learn them properly till prefreestyle, or basic 7&8)
11:19 backwards pumps (im trying to ignore those guys)
heres a tip that every coach will yell at you "BEND YOUR KNEES"
my coach used to scream that at me all the time 😂when we do crossovers we bend so much we almost touch the ice (my coach is also named Lisa)
    also yes
    skates are quite expensive
    my first pair were $240
and they were Jackson Ultima Evolution's
you do pay more for higher level skates
plus it costs to get the blades mounted
    i recommend watching Coach Julia
she helps me a lot with tricks and moves
