    Mayday: Air Disaster - From Season 1 Episode 3 "Fire On Board": Everything is normal as Flight 111 leaves New York City for Geneva. The captain is Urs Zimmerman, one of Swissair’s most experienced pilots and a trainer for the safety conscious airline. But 56 minutes into the flight, Captain Zimmerman smells smoke. He contacts Air Traffic Control to declare an emergency. He is told to land immediately at the closest airport - Halifax. Captain Zimmerman is busy going through the Swissair checklist, shutting off electrical circuits one by one to isolate the problem. He knows he must get down on the ground as quickly as possible but the plane is 30 tons too heavy to land. It’s a race against time to dump fuel and land.
    Fire can go from a nuisance to a catastrophe in no time. On board Flight 111, there is suddenly a major failure of all electrical systems. Co-pilot Stefan Loew tells Air Traffic Control that he’s lost all his main instruments. He declares an emergency. This is the last transmission from the plane. Radar records show the plane flying on for six more minutes before crashing into the Atlantic, killing all on board.
    Fire on Board asks why the fire spread so destructively, so quickly. When the pilots switched off all non-essential electrical systems, they thought that they had switched off the in-flight entertainment system. It turns out that the way it was wired meant they could not de-activate that circuit.
    When a cockpit fills with smoke, pilots are forced to leave their seats. Investigators believe that there was no one at the controls of Flight 111 when it crashed. Passengers and crew knew they were doomed.
    The Canadian Coast Guard picks up bodies and wreckage on the surface of the water. The black box and the cockpit voice recorder both stopped at the same time as the last transmission. Experts study the remains of the cockpit to discover the source of fire. The investigation finds the in-flight entertainment system provided the spark and the insulation that covers the entire inside of the aircraft provided the tinder.
    The discoveries are not new. These fire hazards were known. It’s the snail’s pace of regulatory change that killed people.

    I have to say, as a pilot and a mechanic, the installation of this entertainment system without corporate approved wiring documentation is tantamount to irresponsible operation. If they got something from McDonald Douglas, it would have been FAA approved and would come with a cockpit checklist as well. That silver insulation has been inside aircraft that I have worked on for 40 years; I'm not suggesting that it shouldn't be swapped out, I'm just saying that the principal cause was wiring, not insulation. BTW, if you put non-approved electrical systems in ANY aircraft it becomes "Experimental" and cannot carry passengers.

    These two pilots did not do anything wrong. They did not panic, they followed the procedures, they could not have made an emergency landing on water because of "some smoke" of undetermined cause. When they situation got worse, it did so at a rapid pace, and they still were 20 minutes from any airport whatsoever. They have been cleared of all responsibility -- and they should. This flammable material should not have been aboard a plane in the first place. They couldn't see what was going on above their heads.

    When you have fire/smoke onboard; your number one priority is to get the plane on the ground as soon as possible at the nearest airport wether you’re familiar with the airport or not. Tragically, if things would’ve been done/handled differently, the outcome might’ve been different.

    • @lizgoldstein4256
      @lizgoldstein4256 Год назад +5

      The smoke came and went -- it does not always warrant an emergency landing, there can be smoke, coming from the AC and it doesn't mean that there is a massive fire going on above your heads as was the case for these two pilots. It was a material design error. That stuff shouldn't even burn despite faulty wiring.
      Either way, they were too far away from any airport for an emergency landing. They wouldn't have made it.

    Competition actually brought down this plane.
    So basically there were a lot of these European airlines and stuff and well in order to bring more passengers and get them to use first class and business, they installed the IFE and rushed to do so. And well it had many flaws.
    Anyway flight 111 went down and well now LESS people used Swissair and then their debts started to rise. 9/11 happened, and even LESS people used it.
    On October 2nd, they were really crippled and declared bankruptcy and stopped flying. The Swiss government had to fund Swissair until 2002, where Crossair (subsidiary) then rebranded to Swiss International Air Lines and became the airline we love today.
    If you say I’m wrong, I know these events really well

      Problem is that if they hadn’t dumped fuel, this posed its own problems. Among these is that landing whilst too heavy risked the landing gear collapsing and causing a belly landing, which in itself risked a fire or explosion due to either friction between metal and runway, or because a wing or other part was sheared off and a spark caused the fuel tanks to then catch fire/explode.
      Even if the plane had landed with the majority of the starting fuel on board, and there hadn’t been the landing gear collapse, then there risked other problems like the wheels popping or the plane being difficult to brake, which would then cause problems like potentially causing the plane to veer off the runway or overshoot the runway completely. This could cause major loss of life or serious injury.
