Man, I’m a huge fan of JM. Truly. I am constantly enamored with his playing and his approach to songwriting. But there is something otherworldly about Derek Trucks’ ability. I remember thinking when they first released that cover of RS, “JM has the sex appeal and pop rock stud status, but Derek is the best of those three. And it’s not really close.” Derek still blows my mind with how he makes his guitar sound. He is a master of slide, without question. Mayer was a stud then as well, but what’s incredible is that he has gotten considerably BETTER since that cover shoot. He went from a pop singer songwriter having a significant love affair with the Blues to being an all around versatile guitarist who continually stretches and challenges his knowledge of his instrument. He is a true student of the guitar and it has been a really fun journey to witness his growth from the beginning of his career. (FYI: Derek said near the end “make your bowels move,” not “palace move,” hence the “brown note” statement.)

I think every guitarist in the audience cried a bit. For me, Fender JM strat. Bias because I own one, and I’ve never played a strat as perfect as that. The Big Dipper pickups are sensational. I got a sensational price on mine long before fender dropped him. You’re right, they’re very hard to find now, and the prices are crazy. Saw the same one as mine for $11k the other day!! I can’t comment on his PRS yet because I haven’t played one. But I’m not drawn to it. That said, PRS don’t tend to fail at anything they put their hand to, so I’m sure it’s awesome. 🤘
