Monterey strat with the fender strap is so 2007 and I'm here for it. Kenny Wayne Shepherd showed his on rig rundown and gave Mayer props for also playing the priceless artifact.
it’s more of an issue with the way he plays now… it’s not an equipment issue. he plays slower and with less intensity. he never takes it to that next level with his soloing like he used to. his hands often look fatigued, just an observation.
I suspect he’ll eventually go back to his roots. The FENDER STRAT. Which we all know is his true love. PAUL. You’re just a business venture. And that’s it. Yea Paul that’s all it is. I bet if Fender asked him back he’d leave streak marks from Paul’s factory.

He definitely wanted to end the song around 17:57 but Steve Jordan didn’t pick up on that cue so he had to just seamlessly continue soloing and end and try ending again at 18:15. Such a pro! That’s the beauty of live music.
No slight against his PRS but for me his sound had so much more color when he picked up the Strat. One thing about Mayer that separates him from some other elite players is the way he builds leads, they are very rhythmic and musical. Great stuff.
The PRS is a deeper sound. This makes me wonder, Mayer is 45 years old now. Ears change as you age, especially if you stand in front of a monitor half of your life. Gotta think this might play a part going for a PRS sound, the musicians ear has changed. Just my two cents. I'm more excited to watch him tour with the Wolf replica this summer with the dead. That guitar has soul.
Mayer played like butter on the Monterey Strat. The PRS seemed to fight him a few times. Regardless, very grateful to hear one of the best Trio’s in history play again. Thanks for the upload!
