Emu's Pink Windmill Kids: Birdland

- I love the Pink Windmill Kids, and I will always defend them whenever anyone criticises their outfits as unfashionable. In the first place, I think that on the whole the wardrobe department did a very good job to come up with most of the things they came up with, and generally struck a good balance. But, more to the point, even if they were wearing things that look a bit dated these days (which I insist they don't), I will still without fail argue that the costumes worked back then, and shouldn't be judged by today's context. I will never back down and always maintain that, in their own way, they were style icons and years ahead of their time. If you watch any of their routines and conclude that they are committing some sort of garment-related faux pas, I strongly contend that you are wrong, *without exception*.
Apart from this one in which quite frankly they look ridiculous beyond words.
Anyway, this piece is an instrumental called Birdland, originally by Weather Report, and danced to brilliantly around the foyer and stairs area of the Theatre Royal in Nottingham (and not, as I inexplicably previously thought, the Central studios). The gang would return there later in the series to record What D'You Know, We've Got a Show on stage. Originally broadcast on 21st February 1986.
Many thanks to Joe for lending me this tape.

Thanks they were no subtitles on this one and I really wanted to know the lyrics
These have got to be some of the weirdest costumes ever worn throughout the whole show! I wonder who's idea these were
They were well and truly stitched up by the wardrobe department for this one (pun partially intended), weren't they? Needless to say, I don't think these costumes were ever used again!
@@VideotapeFTW And for good reason XD
@@randomdude8790 honestly, I love the outfits
@@mubadubelubyn Important question, would you voluntarily wear one of these outfits?
@@randomdude8790 not in everyday life, no
This routine feels so random and I'm here for it
I wonder why Daryl wasn't in this routine at all, and Debbie and Helen weren't in the end of this routine.
I also thought Daryl wasn't in this one to begin with, but he's at the front at 1:42. He and Helen were on Spin Quiz duty straight after, which is why they weren't in the Pink Windmill parts. (Not sure about Debbie.)
0:19 Is this sequence supposed to be...serious? Those forced scowls make me chuckle every time I watch this clip.
They don't quite nail the moodiness they were going for, do they?
@@VideotapeFTW And those outfits aren't much help either
@@lucasmckinley8087 I wouldn't know where to start going about things if asked to place an order. "I'd like 10, um..."
@@VideotapeFTW "Y'know, ten, uh, you have those outfits you use for a second-rate primary school musical about a shipwrecked crew getting stranded in Tahiti and surrounded by cannibal bird-men? Ten of those thank you."
Not counting kids who have returned. There have been 63 total kids from the Corona academy dance school on the show
I thought i watched all of them, turns out i was wrong. I’m not complaining though
I'm playing this song in my school's jazz band!
UPDATE: I got kicked out on short notice in December 2017 for missing most practices due to seizures.
I hope your uniform isn't anything like the Pink Windmill Kids' costumes! ;-)
VideotapeFTW Don't worry; they're not! But it would be so funny if they were! XD
0:20 Kelly, calm down!
Their timing as always is faultness and so impressive!
Yep, couldn't agree more. And some of the acrobatic bits are amazing, too.
What's with the part at 0:19 with the girls in front of a black background
I think the director was going for an artful moody bit. I'm not sure he succeeded...
@@VideotapeFTW they look like they were about to do some superpower thing like transform into like ant man or something haha
The outfits are actually kinda cool tbh- especially the boys outfits
Not gonna lie, I think these outfits are cool! I’ve seen worse. Love the song as well.
The costumes are uh very iconic and same to say about the dance ;)
When it comes to outlandish costumes, it's between this one and one they did in the very final series:

Poor Abbie, Sarah and Kelly got to wear both!
VideotapeFTW ahah yeah that one scares my friends cuz it's too weird for them
I love these outfits :)
I was ready for Bob Fosse to suddenly show up.
1:05 i love this part though!! kelly and joe were so talented
0:19 starring contest 👀
Emu wins! He never blinks.
@@VideotapeFTWhaha
lol the directors must have stolen some of catrina’s crayons because what the heck is this
I want to know what the costume department were thinking...
...this is not the type of pwk i know
My question is: *why does this exist*
*because yes*
why tammy look like sailor venus?;-;
