Hi John, as far as we know the yacht does not have any particular defence against lightning strikes. However, apparently there are lots of different ways to do so. One i've heard sounds interesting is some sort of fan of rods at the top of the mast that if hit can disperse the strike. However, if it worked you'd think insurance companies would insist on them.
Aah camaaaan! What kind of cruel twisted ending was that? Should have known that was where that was ending. Lol. Interesting what you are saying about the power generation. you came up with something that alot of people don't think about, until it's too late. Power storage is as important as the generation. Actually it's been a very RUclipsy, sailing channel kind of morning. They've been popping up one after the other. Now I've caught up with you, I'd better get on and do!
Those are led acid batteries. They really should have a gen set. Wind power works on a sailboat much of the time, but its only 400 watts at best, where as a gen set of about the same cost will do a couple thousand in the pinch. Ideal situation is to have both. I live in eastern central europe off grid with my 2 sons, and we have both Solar, wind and genset when needed. And we happen to be in an ideal belt for a 575 watt windmill. But it was over 14000 US to install it, however in the deep winter it has saved our ass. My solar is now upto about 3000 watts and that has run me $4500 and my battery bank is 48 volts at 550 amps. So quite large, and we no longer have any concerns about power. First couple years were rough though as it gets quite cold here.
@@wishusknight3009 I imagine that a gen set would be important, living where you are, especially if your daylight hours in winter are as short as they were in Edinburgh when I loved there. Those short winter days are one thing I don't miss about living in Scotland now I'm back in New Zealand.

You kiwis on patreon? Sorry if this has been asked a million times. Just enjoy your no nonsense humor.
That''s thoughtful of you to ask Travis. We have resisted it thus far. Just didn't feel right. However, we are looking into it right now as we are at a bit of a crossroads to keep going or can it with covid costing us most of our income.
@@TheCruisingKiwis the very idea your wrestling with it shows you don’t take it for granted. Like some do. I can understand feeling like you shouldn’t be asking for money if your out yachting around drinking bubbly all day, jk haha. The other side of it is if you put out there what you are really doing and why and folks still want to see you keep going its up to us if we want to support you? Its not as though you’re forcing anyone. I wish you guys well wherever and whatever your into and decide. Peace be with you.

Just goes to prove one has better chances of getting hit by lightning than winning the lotto...
You are 100% right. Rachel explored that fact in another episode in the aftermath of the strike ruclips.net/video/p5qiQwh2tbM/видео.html
I guess if we have to ask, the price is too high.
Haha yeah probably, perhaps, maybe, might be....

Where did Rachael grow up - I do not hear a kiwi accent and the word choices she uses suggest UK
You picked it right Rodger Dodger. Rachel was raised in Ipswich though for some reason doesn't have the local accent. It seems, to me at least, to be rather neutral.
She she is speaking correctly if that's what you mean lol
