Great video. This needed to be exposed. I've just recently purchased a 10 year old boat where the surveyor I'd hired went up the mast and said all was good. I went up and immediately found a cracked swage on the S2. We fired the surveyor, hired a pro rigger and he found more defects including spreader to mast attachment that required lots of attention. He reported the rig as unsafe. Bottom line, the surveyors themselves are also a problem. We are just about to start our rig replacement and your vid is perfect timing. While you don't mention the name of the company, there are likely others that may have issues with their rig who used those miscreants and they should be advised (warned?). Might very well save lives. Can that company be incented to issue a 'recall' to their customers?
@@michaellahrkamp9755 Agreed. You gotta be careful out there. I recently employed a surveyor to check the electrical systems pre-purchase on a boat that he himself had recently surveyed for insurance purposes. I easily discovered a lot of play in the rudder post just by pushing and pulling on it. When asked why this wasn't mentioned in his survey he just shrugged and said 'Oh it needs that to operate properly'. I was naturally therefore suspicious of anything he'd written or said. And this from someone in an industry that prides itself in it's accreditation schemes.
A crucial video topic, and you managed really well to get the message to all of us, and at the same time not exposing the unprofessional rigging company - I think you made the right and respectful choice here. Really appreciate your experience sharing. Thank you, Thomas. Cheers.
I step and unstep my masts on the hard with never a problem. It is NOT dangerous if you know what you are doing. Plus the job doesn't take much time - around an hour for both masts on my ketch. Of course hare in Maine we step and unstep our masts every year so we get lots of practice. The boat doesn't fit in the winter storage shed with the masts up. That allows us to fully inspect the rig every year and replace/repair anything that is needed. Your video is a good demonstration why you should do your own work. That way you know exactly what was done and that it was done correctly. One other thing. As far as using the same parts that were originally used on your boat. That is fine if you sail a newish boat. My boat is 50 years old and the builder has been out of business for 40 years. The brands of rigging components originally used are simply not available now. So when I have refit my rig, I use good quality parts from a quality manufacturer. If you pay attention to the strength ratings of the components it is not an issue to use appropriate parts. It just takes a bit of knowledge of metallurgy and rig design, which I learned in university from materials science and naval architecture courses, respectively. Shoddy work done by yards is why I do all the work on my boats myself. Incidentally, a full rigging refit should also include the chain plates, or if the chain plates are not replaced they should be fully inspected (removed and dye penetration tested or X-rayed). You also need to fully inspect and repair the attachment points of the chain plates to the boat. You can lose a mast even with a perfect new rig if a chain plate or its attachment to the hull fails.
Great video, Thomas. Maybe after Kylie sees her claims through against the previous rigging company then you can let us all know who to avoid. Good idea bringing up your concerns about her rig before heading toward Panama, it can be quite the jump if you're avoiding the coast of S America.
Appreciate this! I am doing a "pin to pin" right now and have a trusted friend assisting me like you did for Kylie! It helps that the rigger is a friend too so I have double the advice :)
Thank you Thomas for taking the time to focus on quality and safety of rigging and companies who do such rigging. There are so many people that go completely unaware of the importance of such things. But as you are impressing on your audience, it's a matter of safety and life out there on the open ocean, where there are no docks, marinas to easily motor to, or rescue people that can come to your aid when your rigging fails when it matters the most. Keep up the good work on that subject.

Everyone who has had rig work done should examine their rig immediately after watching this video no matter where they had work done, or by who. Worse, they didn't have an experienced and knowledgeable rigger inspect the other guys work. And even worse than that is to reuse old parts... and if they charged her for new parts, that is fraud. I purchased my boat when it was 20 years old. Replaced the mast and all rigging. Also, has the replacement last epoxy primed and painted. Good educational video. We cannot do workmanship with excellent without a fair cost- parts and labor.
You must mention, BY NAME, the COMPANY and PEOPLE responsible for the criminally shoddy rigging. If you CHOOSE not to name them you become COMPLICIT in their crime. That rigging job would kill Kylie or her crew.
Thomas i watch a lot of sailing videos. sunsets, sunrises, rainbows, the sailing and the marine life all interest me. There a few , Like You Thomas , who present Excellent Videos on the Practical side of Sailing. Thank You for such a Well Presented and Educational Warning about Rigging. Fair Winds 😎
Watching this video and your other videos, I'm starting to realize that owning a sailboat is just as expensive as owning a power boat. A power boat just has an engine(s) that has to be maintained. A sailboat has an engine, AND the standing rig, AND the running rigging, AND the sails, and all of these parts are dissolving into the sea from the second they are installed!
Great video. Have been sailing for most of my 67 years and have seen a lot of ugly stuff but that was seriuosly bad especially from a so called professional company! Have done all my own repairs, rebuilds, refits and have never cut corners on the many boats we have owned. We have always felt confident in our boats when heading out and I personally know every inch of the boat. We recently sold our last boat of 21 years and purchsed another older boat and are presently going through a rebuild/refit...only job I hired out was compounding and waxing the hull...my 67 year old shoulders just did not feel like doing the work!😂 Cheers Mike and All 🇨🇦 S/V Bears Mistress II
What is everyone’s thoughts on a global certification for riggers? Similar to ABYC certification in the states. It would make good riggers even more expensive, but for something like this it’s worth it…at least I feel.
Thank you so much for watching and for being here! I’m thankful for knowing you found this video helpful, and I hope it can contribute to push pressure on the yachting industry in general to have a higher standard.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching this episode. Lots of work behind an episode like this so means a lot it’s appreciated. But most of all if it could contribute to safe sailing and money saved for fellow sailors I’m happy as well. All the best and cheers 🍻
Hi Thomas, I've been a "rigger" in the sense that I was the guy who knew more about it than anyone else aboard, more than once. That said, the kind of rigging I've had most experience with has taught me things like: NEVER use redwood timber for a yardarm; they break too easily while tacking a square rigger through the eye of the wind. Also, Manila makes poor square topsail sheets. I like the old stuff. It's just easier to work with...& never mind how much more stable square sails are than a spinnaker! I've had to sail a 34' Islander into its slip with a spinnaker sheet stuck under the rudder...but friends & I docked an engineless 70' square topsail schooner more than once ...& I had an upwind approach...so it seemed relatively easy. -Angelika's Husband
Wow, what a great detailed video covering a subject most of us sailor know very little about. Safety first. How about interviewing the "other company" to see how they would deal with a full refit and cover it in a future video? Fair winds
Thank you for your kind words and for being here🙏🏻 I don’t believe the companies involved doing such a poor job wanna participate in any videos as they never admitted any mistakes or wanted to compensate. They showed so much ignorance not only towards craftsmanship but also in safety! All the best 🍻
Thank you so much for watching and I’m really happy to hear this episode was valuable to you. Thank you for being here and for your kind comment. Much appreciated 🍻
Just purchased a 2004 sailboat full keel. No documentation of standing rigging replace but portions have been. Will a complete replacement with all new equipment. Having all running rigging replaced also as of is frayed. Retired now but am a licensed A&P aircraft mechanic but that leaves me out of sailboat. It is a learning curve but understand the issues of metal fatue. Etc. Video very informative for me. Thanks
This is such an important topic. It is very important for sailors to educate themselves about their own rigging so you can know what is right or wrong. I trusted a large and reputable rigger to replace my rigging without knowing for myself what is correct. The result was a boat that sailed poorly. Fortunately, the rig was not unsafe, but after their third attempt at rig tuning they had badly overtensioned the shrouds and did structural damage to the boat.
This is one ☝️ of your greatest videos. Very informative and I have learn a lot in this short space of time. Thanking you once again for looking out for your friend and Sailors around the world 🌎.
Thomas you really don't need to apologise for the emotional content of this video. Even I, as a complete newb was shocked at the condition of the "New" rigging. I can't help but wonder what would have happened in my case, where I had to save for two years to be able to afford the refit, only to have it handed back to me in such a dangerous fashion. What if I couldn't afford to have another refit?
many of your videos are invaluable. However, this one is of particular noteworthiness to the sailling community. This video could save lives! Thank you Thomas.
I hope she can get her money back on the shoddy refit, including any court costs required to get her money back. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t an international standard or license for such a critical aspect of the ship, and the lives that rely on this system.
Hei. Ellers var alt fint her.
Forrige eier brukte motor i tillegg til to seil. Seilte veldig fint. Var utrolig stødig med 3 seil. Neste sommer blir der 4 seil i alt. Om været er rett for det. Båten er et smykkeskrin så vakker. Jeg bor i båten hele året :)
Great video. You touched on the issue of often Chinese made copy parts which just don't match up with required quality standards. I'm also a rock climbing instructor. Occasionally clients will present with carabiniers they have bought online. They can look good. They often show a CE mark however this is not the Certificate European quality stamp but is China Export! A meaningless stamp in terms of giving quality assurance for safety critical pieces of climbing equipment. These things should not be able to find their way onto our markets but sadly our governments and regulators appear to have given up on this basic function of government. Safety is being sacrificed on the altar of "free markets".
There are scammers in every industry and activity. We should all help guide each other to the best companies and individuals that perform next level, top tier and stellar work when spending hard earned cash. Not to mention the individuals life and family or friend lives that could be endangered due to sloppy work. Great video Thomas ,Jim Rodgers
I think the the term you look for is Gross Negligence. In most civilized nations that would be a criminal act and would be jail time if an incident occurred because of it. I see a lot of sailors who go the cheap route and either do this themselves or with a cheap company on some 3rd world island. Your rig is your life, like your hull is your life when out there on the deep sea. Great video!
Thank you Thomas for sharing this valuable knowledge! I hope this video will go viral through the sailing community. Kylie is lucky to have you as a friend ;)
Thx for this one again. Luckily I found a very experienced british sailor back then helping me thru that jumgle of rigging companies and showing me the ropes, literally. Stainless stell ropes... ;-)
Thomas, thank you for passing on this knowledge. I learnt a lot from this video and I also learnt that the company that refit my cat did a very professional job.Thank you again.
Hi Thomas. Great video. I had a related incident of riggers looking for work telling me my 5 year old rod rigging”looked tired”. It had just been fully inspected involving mast removal and NDT testing (dye penetration) of the ball ends. It’s worth remembering that with rod rigging you can’t tell what’s going on without dismantling it. More hassle!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this topic. You have nothing to apologise for, as far as I can see this issue. On the contrary, you are helping others to save money and more importantly - to stay out of trouble and avoid potentially tragic consequences. God Jul!
Hi Thomas Thank you so much for taking initiative to do this! Can you say something about the chain plates as well? How often should they be changed? Also - maybe you should rename your video to "mast refitting tutotial" or something to hit a wider audience as I think the messages in this video are so incredibly important. I have sailed for 3 years now and this in so incredibly useful for me - and most of us will have to do this at some point.
What was the results of their post mortem (fcs) Was it a life raft or their dinghy ( fcs) Seems they didn’t even have a grab bag. Brilliant channel btw. One of the few.

You must mention, BY NAME, the COMPANY and PEOPLE responsible for the criminally shoddy rigging. If you CHOOSE not to name them you become COMPLICIT in their crime. That rigging job would kill Kylie or her crew.
Perhaps better: Speak with that company and let them have their say.
Good job Thomas. I'm shocked at the state of that refit.
Thomas, I have learned so much about boat rigging and boat safety from your channel, and I am only an aspirational boat owner! ⛵ God Jul! 🎄
We recently sold our last boat of 21 years and purchsed another older boat and are presently going through a rebuild/refit...only job I hired out was compounding and waxing the hull...my 67 year old shoulders just did not feel like doing the work!😂
Cheers

What is everyone’s thoughts on a global certification for riggers? Similar to ABYC certification in the states. It would make good riggers even more expensive, but for something like this it’s worth it…at least I feel.
Thanks for your video. I could have been caught in the same way. as not aware of such problems with companies, doing poorly.
Thank you so much for watching and for being here! I’m thankful for knowing you found this video helpful, and I hope it can contribute to push pressure on the yachting industry in general to have a higher standard.
Essential topic. I am evaluating a yacht shortly and these are good pointers for all owners and prospective owners.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching this episode. Lots of work behind an episode like this so means a lot it’s appreciated. But most of all if it could contribute to safe sailing and money saved for fellow sailors I’m happy as well. All the best and cheers 🍻
How about naming the company that did the substaandard rigging.
I needed to see this! I'm about to have my rigging replaced as well and this alerted me to many things I would've overlooked. Thank you!
Yeah I really hope she Get some refund because this is not what she paid for. Thank you for watching and for being here. All the best and cheers🍻
Always I am learning more from SwT
Thank you so much🙏🏻 Makes me happy to know there is some value to be found in some of my episodes. All the best and cheers 🍻
Thank you Thomas, im looking for a rigger to refit my boat and you offered sound advice that will help me find an experianced and professional rigger.
Thank you so much for watching 🙏🏻 I’m really happy to know you found this video helpful. Good luck with your refit
Thank you so much for watching and for sharing your experience and thoughts. Very much appreciated 🙏🏻
Finally😂😂 i was thinking about when today i would see you here😂😂 good on you Thomas... Merry Christmas my friend🎅🎅
Thank goodness this was not discovered during a storm!!! buyer beware , great information 👍👍
Thank you so much for this comment and I agree. Especially when it’s proven to put other peoples lives at risk.
Thank you so much for being here🙏🏻
prob the best rig video I've seen to help people understand what to look for in a tangible way. thank you
Thank you so much for watching and your very kind feedback 🙏🏻
I'm glad you found it valuable
I think the the term you look for is Gross Negligence. In most civilized nations that would be a criminal act and would be jail time if an incident occurred because of it.
I see a lot of sailors who go the cheap route and either do this themselves or with a cheap company on some 3rd world island. Your rig is your life, like your hull is your life when out there on the deep sea.
Great video!
Thank you
Beautiful video
International testing and standards
Certified Inspection
Let’s do it
Excellent!!!! Thank you!!!! From another offshore singlehander
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind feedback 🙏🏻 Fair winds fellow sailor ⛵️
Hei, happy I have found your channel!!! After some years of motorboating on my 31ft fishing boat i am about to pull the trigger to get a sailing boat and start being free again. Your channel has a lot of good content and I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge. Fair winds and safe travels.
😳 Lucky Kylie to have you near! Thank so much for the video! Saved it on my sailing list. Future videos on this will be very welcome. Fair winds!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words🙏🏻 Kylie is a very good friend and it’s just what you do for friends. I’m so glad she did not sail out the pacific with that rig. It would been a disaster 100% guarantee.
Fair winds ⛵️
Thanks Thomas! I just got a boat in Rio and while it had awesome and transparent owners and I'm happy with it, the rigging is about 10 years so I'm planning to do this soon. That's why this video is greatly appreciated!
Solid advice. Thank you, Thomas!
Some years ago i tried to warn a friend his rig wasn't up to the trip he was embarking on (72 Ft. Ketch) Two days out his mizzen came down & killed him , I still feel bad i wasn't more vocal on my insistence . You did well my friend .
Great video Thomas, and not a Word about Them kisses
Hi Thomas
I’m not a sailor and I don’t have a boat!🤔
I thought this video was really interesting and educational. Thank you for sharing this with us!👍🥰🥰
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this topic. You have nothing to apologise for, as far as I can see this issue. On the contrary, you are helping others to save money and more importantly - to stay out of trouble and avoid potentially tragic consequences. God Jul!
Well done on this video pointing out serious rigging info. Note taken.
did she contact the first company to let the owner know what happened? if so, what we his/her reaction?
The legal matters are still pending, so I do not wanna share any more details at the moment.
Good video Thomas, thank you. I had redo the rigging last year, unstepped and pin-to-pin. It's serious job.
Hi Thomas
Thank you so much for taking initiative to do this!
What was the results of their post mortem (fcs)
Was it a life raft or their dinghy ( fcs)
Seems they didn’t even have a grab bag.
Brilliant channel btw. One of the few.
Thomas you did a great job laying out the facts. You are a good friend and have a smart and savvy eye for quality and the proper way something should be. 😇⛵🤩
I agree with Christopher Kingsland
Thank you so much for watching and your comment as well. All the best and cheers 🍻
Great video and info Thomas. Thank you, fantastisk.
Thank you for watching and for being here! Cheers 🍻
Well balanced and good job Thomas, was a lot for landrats like me,but good to hear about it from guys like you.
Well done Thomas. You presented the facts, got expert opinion and kept it at that level. Thank you.
Great episode. Looking forward to seeing your inspection tips in the future. Cheers
Thank you for your kind words and for being here! Cheers 🍻
Can't wait for the followup videos!!
Thanks Tomas. That was a lot of good information. Best regards from Jarle
Great video Thomas. Well done on bringing this to the sailing public.
Very informative. It's gonna hurt when I do a rigging inspection on my 25 year old Catalina 380. For all I know, it might still have the original rigging.
It sure is a costly job but cheaper than loosing the rig or even worse. Good luck with your refitting and all the best.
Excellent video and presentation!
Thank you so much! Happy you enjoyed this one, and thank you for watching. Cheers 🍻
@@SailingwithThomas I found your channel through RANs video and I am busy going back through your videos and they are incredibly informative and well made! Happy Sailing and I will send a well deserved cheers 🍻 back to you sir! Thank You!
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Hey Thomas! Trank you for this Great Video. Very good work, as always. Safety Forst. Fair Winds, Christian🙋🏼♂️
I would be upset as well! Thank you for the excellent and knowledgeable video. Great information that I will always carry with me. 🎄
AThimas thank you for putting out this video….. I’m in the process of purchasing a sail boat and found it full of great information to help me.
Thank you Thomas. I was wondering and apprehensive with my own refit (1990's original); some fittings were reused (after inspection). My brand new Furlex never worked properly, and after many attempted fixes, I removed the fore-stay and found that parts of the furler were fused. I am back with hanks!
I will drop the mast again and check it all myself, after viewing this video!!!
Thank you Thomas i will refit my rigg next year and you Video was very helpful for me.
Thx Mike
Great video. Keep them coming.
Thank you for sharing this Thomas. This is scary but not unexpected unfortunately.
Thank you Thomas, great subject and great lessons. As always your schematics are an excellent (and very professional) inclusion
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here. All the best🍻
Freaking fantastic video! Caveat emptor is the watch word. Thanks for sharing this critical information. Merry Christmas!
