Cuttlefish and all cephalopods have always fascinated me. While swimming around the Florida keys I came across three tiny tiny squid and they would follow me around but when I looked at them they spread their little arms to look bigger. But would still want to go along with me. Was a great experience.

When my son was 4 years old I took him to the aquarium. I pointed and said “That’s a cuttlefish!”
After a long pause he turned to me and asked, “Do we cuddle with it?”

That always struck me as a terribly sad fact about these creatures.
Humans and dogs have evolved together for the last 300,000 years.
Imagine if the octopus was long lived and could pass on its knowledge from one generation to the next...who knows what they'd be doing by now? What could they build with those bodies?
And imagine if humans had another species on the planet they could truly communicate with.
The octopuses (octopii?) and cuttlefish would probably use the squids as their soldiers. Giant and colossal squid are big, evil creatures...
Unfortunately, though, humans can't get along with one another, really. So I worry about what we'd do if there was another successful intelligent life form we could exploit.
Imagine being at war with our oceans...

It was aired on pbs in 2007, but the discovery of the toxicity of the flamboyant is referenced in a book from 2000 on Wikipedia, so it likely is from 2000. It seems a lot of these old documentaries are being dumped on RUclips for ad revenue.

I was at the Ripleys aquarium and they had cuttlefish there. I ended up downloading a video of a cuttlefish flashing and I held it up to the tank. And they actually interacted with it. It was pretty amazing. They really weren't doing anything until I played the video.
First new show they've seen online in ages...
I bet they recognized it as another cuttlefish and were intrigued.
The description of the alien at the beginning almost described me perfectly, right up to the "clever" part.
guy by the name Ken Criswell is the top cuttlefish guy in the world. You don't hear about him because from day one he's stayed behind the camera and does something ill never understand. many of the things known about the cuttlefish came from Ken. He let's other claim his findings and will never say anything about it. This is why you don't hear about him. He says as long as attn is being shown to the cuttlefish he's ok with it. Thats says ALOT about the man. He truly DOES care about them and does what needs to be done to help them. So just keep the guys name in mind and secretly thank him and know that most of the people you see that will talk about the amazing animal...all got their info from this Ken Criswell guy from Kentucky.

Great video! Everybody knows about squid and octopus but these little guys seem to be undeservedly forgotten. Amazing how they are so smart for such a short lifespan...
They are extremely well known and not forgotten by anyone at all, really.
The part about the flamboyant cuttlefish, I immediately recognised the Lembeh Strait shallow waters en black sands.
I've never seen that many diverse weird critters on a single dive.
With dive sites named Nudi Fals or Critters Hunt that really live up to their name.

My wife and i ..went to tenerife regularly we were by rock pools one day when i noticed a small cuttlefish moving across a pool white algie it turned exact same red algie blakc rock pink weed blue plastic it could blend with any thing ..i was amaised .i think you must find your work one longenjoyable study ..loved the vidio ..

What I've always wanted to know about cuttlefish is that if a cuttlefish in captivity is not provided with the opportunity to mate, how long do they live?

But without mating, is it a fulfilling life?
It lives 30 years longer. The female is an energy vampire.
I seem to recall that an average little octopus don't live longer than a year or two in captivity, but don't quote me on that... Meh, I'll look it up for you.. Yep, I was right, 1-2 years.
Generally speaking, animals who live in circumstances where they are unable to reproduce live much longer.... Less resources diverted to offspring/mates, less chance of injury or death from mate competition... Etc. however, i don't think this applies to these animals which are programmed to mate then die. Great question!
Almost 20y.ago, a science professor at one of Arizona's universities saw a meteor crash near his house and went to the site. He saw an odd-looking rock with some green substance on it. He got a sample of it and decided to find out what the green substance was? He had it examined under an electron microscope, characterize it, etc., and the specs were fed into a mainframe computer to find a match. After over a day of computer time, the computer found a match! The green substance matched the DNA of an octopus!!

It's quite amazing what cuttlefish can do with the "animated color displays" on their skin. Wow!
I've been face to face with Octopi in the ocean when I lived in Hawaii, so I knew first-hand their incredible powers of transformation.
If you are following along with an octopus across the coral and you look away for just one second they can take that moment to completely alter their skin color, pattern and texture.
They'll disappear.
Plus, what strength they have! If you hold a small octopus in your hand and he doesn't want to let go of you, well, mostly you lose. All muscle and even their tiny suckers are surprisingly strong.

I absolutely love cuttlefish. So majestic and mysterious but also beautiful and so very cool. My next tat will be either American traditional or Neo traditional cuttlefish possibly catching a crab or a deep sea angler fish. Leaning towards the angler fish because I believe my artist would absolutely kill this! I already have a kraken tat on dragging down a clipper ship and the other arm has a sperm whale lifting a clipper ship up

I love all of the octopods because they are so intelligent and if there is any other being that would be considered an alien it would be them but they are so much more intelligent than what we get them credit for

It is kind of sad in away that such a fascinating ,intelligent beautifully amazing creature has such a short life span. It would be do cool if they could have a lot longer life span that they could become even more intelligent and cunning and who knows what they evolve to be like they are pretty remarkable gifts on our planet in my view.
