  • Hello everyone, in this video I give a tutorial on how to raise big bells. This shows me raising the Twickenham tenor and I go through the steps on how to raise it up right and effectively and efficiently too. Please leave comments if you have any enquiries! In that case, enjoy the tutorial!

Many thanks for a great video Thomas. I started ringing a few weeks ago and really enjoy ringing up the big bells.

Before you start ringing up, check that the bell is down so you don’t end up flying to the ceiling and becoming a meme!!!

Correct! In this case, the back bells are always left down!

@@RingerThomas and you had probably checked before starting filming as you already had coils in your hand and the bell was already swinging..

@@francescogreenslade7793 I had checked so that the bell was down. Then the following happened which was recorded on this video. This is primarily how to raise large bells, all the above is for something else.

As the swing increased, when I was pulling the backstroke all the way to the floor, I'd add a little jump as the rope went up, so I could add my body weight to the pull.
I could raise my tower's 16-3-27 cwt tenor in 13 pulls if we were in a hurry ;-)
It didn't ever go up wrong, so there was no need to check at the beginning. The 5th at the time, 7th now, was much harder to get up right.

The trick is to ensure that the bell goes up right. You don't want the clapper on the wrong side.

Yes but some bells are physically impossible to get up right, and therefore not worth the effort of checking and wasting energy. Instead it's best to get the bell up and flip the clapper over.
