  • In this video the Kiwibellringer is back in a sort of vlog but not really. Since I have free time with the bells whilst we're at COVID Alert Level 2, I thought i'd make a video on how to efficiently and painlessly ring up large bells (and get them up right). The bell in question is 27.75 cwt. Obviously some bells, no matter what the circumstance, refuse to go up right for various reasons, so this can't be applied to every bell, but it does give a good general view on how to raise 20cwt+ bells effectively. Even on something ridiculous like Exeter or Liverpool tenor, every bit counts!

the video contains an incredible technique, after ringing Ambrosian bells the time has come for me to learn to ring in this system too... maybe with light bells lol

Having now rung big bells up, the way I do it is check hard at the bottom to make sure it strikes. Then once on both sides. I pull from above my head right down to the floor. I’ve seen others just not pull and that waste’s energy. Your energy on ringing up big bells should be on getting the bell up as fast as possible if not doing it in peal!

This is really helpful! Im starting to find myself on heavier bells more often (about 10cwt+). I have never understood how to ring up heavy bells apart from you have to check it and then get it up!

For a mid weight tenor that's a surprisingly short sally.

Liverpool Cathedral: Yeah they go well, but unless you can stand the bell on each stroke, don’t bother. The tenor is so slow in ringing the front 9 have to stand on each stroke. Try doing that when the thing weighs a 1.2 tonnes. I was on the 9th just ringing rounds, and I couldn’t, I just couldn’t.
